Car Hire at Perpignan Train Station - Exploring the Netherlands

Perpignan Train Station (Gare de Perpignan) is not only the central railway stop for the city of Perpignan, it is also a major transport hub for the whole of the local region. The station is well connected to many of the larger cities in France and Spain, most notably Paris, Toulouse, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Madrid and Barcelona, with high-speed night services to Paris and Strasbourg, among other key destinations. Travellers can also take advantage of the station's local links to places like Narbonne and Portbou. Located a short distance west of the centre (on Place Salvador Dalí), the station is well served by the many regional TER trains operating in the south of France, which connect the city with the Côte Vermeille (Vermillion Coast) between Perpignan and the Spanish border.

Formerly the capital of the counts of Roussillon, Perpignan is a tourist destination with a difference due to the strong Spanish influence seen in its architecture and local culture. There's much to see and do in and around the city centre, particularly in the Vieille Ville (Old Town) where many of the most important monuments, museums and churches are located, including the city's magnificent cathedral begun in the 14th century. This ancient quarter is a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with well-preserved houses and shops selling locally-made artefacts. If you only have time to visit one museum, make sure it's the Musée d'art Hyacinthe Rigaud, one of the best in France because of its impressive collection of paintings by the likes of Dufy, Maillol and Picasso.

Visitors can see and do everything with a car hire from Perpignan Train Station, which is located in the heart of the city centre. Besides affording quick and easy access to all the top tourist attractions, it's the perfect pick-up point for travellers looking to explore the surrounding countryside before enjoying some rest and relaxation on one of the fine Mediterranean beaches to be found in this part of the south of France. Another major advantage is the chance to drive into the nearby Pyrenees Mountains for a memorable lunch in one of the many villages hidden away in the foothills, followed by the thrill of crossing the border into Spain with the possibility of exploring Barcelona, one of Europe's most fascinating cities.

    Station Information

Inaugurated in 1858, Perpignan Station is one of the most striking buildings in the city centre. It has a very close association with the world-famous Spanish artist, Salvador Dali, who described it as the 'centre of the universe' after experiencing a vision of cosmogonic ecstasy there in 1963, after which he painted La Gare de Perpignan, a large-scale oil on canvas. Today the station is a busy transport hub, not just for Perpignan but for the south of France as a hole. There are regular high-speed (TGV) trains arriving from Paris throughout the day, the quickest of which only takes five hours. The station also receives a succession of slower services from all over the country.
