Comprising three terminal buildings numbered 2, 3 and 4 (there's no terminal 1), the main airport in the city of Phoenix is one of the busiest in the USA, handling over 40 million passengers each year. Terminal 2 has 17 gates while Terminal 3 (named after John S. McCain III) has 23 gates. Terminal 4 (the largest and newest of the three) has a total of 86 gates.
The airport has all the facilities a common traveller would need, and they include eating and shopping options, newspaper kiosks, ATMs, and a post office. The spirit of the region is reflected in many of the shopping options at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Stores like Indigenous, Talking Hands, Mosaic, and Roosevelt Row feature unique goods that pay homage to the Southwest. Food and beverages are available for sale 24 hours a day, seven days a week at select restaurants pre-security in all three terminals. Restaurants located past security generally open one hour before departures from nearby gates and remain open up to 30 minutes after the last scheduled flight arrives. Meals that contain less than three ounces of liquid (such as soup, yoghurt or peanut butter) may be carried through security. Drinks may be purchased past security and carried onto the plane. Passengers also have access to a chapel, several ATMs, information counters, nursing stations, smoking areas, WiFi and a museum.
Driving your car rental at Phoenix Airport to and from the city centre is quicker and easier than many other American cities. Also known as the Hohokam Expressway, the AZ 143 road passes through Temp and Phoenix and connects Loop 202 with the I-10 freeway and the eastern entrance to Phoenix Sky Harbor Internatioanl Airport. The quickest route from the city centre to the airport (outside the morning and evening rush hours) is to use the I-10 E from W Jefferson St, taking exit 149 to E Sky Harbor Blvd. Alternatively, there's the The PHX Sky Train, an automated service that transports airport passengers between Valley Metro Rail at 44th and Washington streets, the East Economy Parking area and airport terminals. Another very efficient public transport option is the Valley Metro bus route (number 13) which stops at Terminal 2.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has a large number of parking spaces in the East Economy Parking area and garage. Spaces are located on the north side of the PHX Sky Train East Economy Station, as well as on the first floors of East Economy Garages A and B. Information about airport parking locations, prices and the number of spaces available at any given time is provided by the 24-hour parking hotline on (602) 273-4545.
