    Station information

    Roma Termini is the largest train station in Rome and also one of the largest in all of Europe. The first temporary station was opened by the Pope Pius IX on the 25th February 1863 until it was decided that there would just be one central station as opposed to separate stations for each line. Construction for the permanent station began in 1868 and was completed 6 years later in 1874. Work on a new station began in 1937 but was halted when the facist government collapsed with the new station not being completed until 1950. The station has over 29 platforms with daily services operating throughout Italy to cities such as Florence and Milan and also the rest of Europe.

    Station Facilities

    Rome Termini station has numerous facilities including a wide range of shops from clothing, books, music, accessories, shoes, toys, technology, gift stores, tobacco and news and magazines as well as beauty. Shops such as Accessorize, Pandora, Swarvoski, Foot Locker and Nike as well as restaurants including McDonalds, Chef Express, Juice Bar, Fresco and several more line the entrance hall, there is a large ticket office as well as currency exchanges, travel agents, and post offices on each side of the platform. There is also a Sala Freccia Club for travellers with a gold or platinum CARTAFRECCIA card as well as a lounge for all other travellers. There is also lost and found, parking facilities, banks, car rentals as well as a healthcare service.

    How to get to and from Rome Termini Station

    When you rent a car at Rome Termini Train Station it makes getting to and from the station all that much easier and at your own pace. However should this not be what you plan on doing there are several other transport options available. The station has a train named the Leonardo Express airport train which has a service that runs from the airport to the station with a service every 15 minutes taking roughly 30 minutes for the journey. Depending on your location Rome Termini station is close to the city centre so can also be accessed by foot. There is also a major bus terminal which sits at the front of the station with bus services operating between 5:30am and midnight. There are also taxi stands outside the station as you exit via Piazza dei Cinquecento. The official taxis are white with taxi signs mounted on the roof and “Comune di Roma” on the door.

    Parking tips

    There are 3 car parks located on site when parking your car rental at Rome Termini Train Station, Park and Ride, Piazza Dei Cinquecento and Marsala, all of which are open 24 hours with reasonable price rates ranging from 2.50 euros up to 20.00 euros. There are other parking areas around Rome such as the public parking garages in the centre of Rome. Please be aware that only permanent certified residents of Rome are allowed to park on the streets in the city centre. There is also the option to park on the airports long term parking car park. The city is divided into areas in regards to parking, the blue areas are paid parking spots but these are free on sundays and public holidays. White parking areas are free for up to a maximum of 3 hours and are usually found located near hospitals or in areas of the city where residents only are permitted to park. Yellow areas are free parking spots for the disabled as well as pink areas for mothers and expecting mothers, also located close to outpatients and hospitals. You can also find free parking on streets such as viale dell’Umanesimo, viale dell’Esperanto, via Kenia, via Oceania and viale Algeria surrounding the Palazzo dello Sport as well as white parking areas in the districts of Castro Pretorio and Esquilino.
