Station Information

Sanford Train Station has had fluctuating fortunes since the the Auto Train Corporation first opened it in the early 1970s on a railroad that operated its rolling stock along tracks owned by other companies. The station and all its related transport services fell into bankruptcy in 1981 but rose from the ashes in 1983 when Amtrak revived the popular Auto Train service. Then in 2004 the station building was damaged by hurricanes and eventually rebuilt in 2010 with a new style and design covering around 10,000 square-feet. The building also incorporates energy-saving features such as low-cost lighting and glass coatings that greatly reduce solar gain. A portion of the old station was retained and converted into railway administrative offices.

Being the main train station in the city and one of the busiest in the central Florida area, Sanford Train Station has a very large waiting room with enough seating for approximately 600 passengers. There's also a ticket counter, well-stocked café, restrooms, gift shop and a safe play-area for children of all ages. Besides offering Wi-Fi Internet access throughout the premises, the station is well equipped to cater for passengers of reduced mobility with a wide range of facilities, including wheelchairs (and whellchair lifts) to help disabled travellers move around the station whilst waiting for their train to depart.

How to get to and from Sanford Train station

When you rent a car at Sanford Train Station, the easiest way to get there is on the I-95, while the I-4 will take you directly to the Orlando/Walt Disney World area. I-4 also connects with the Florida Turnpike in the south Orlando area to facilitate a quick easy drive to Palm Beach County, Miami, etc. If you go east from Sanford Train Station on Route 46 you'll connect with I-95, which will take you along Florida's stunning east coast. The station is also conveniently located for travellers looking to get to many popular central and costal Florida locations, including Daytona Beach and Cape Canaveral. Passengers arriving by public transport can use the City of Sanford’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) free shuttle from Sanfor Train Station to the Sanford Information Centre Monday through Saturday.

There’s plenty of free, long-term parking options all over the city of Sanford, including the historic downtown area. One of the best places to park your car rental from Sanford Train Station is the Courthouse Parking car park located on the north-west corner of Commercial Avenue and Palmetto Street. Drivers also have plenty of on-street parking possibilities in Historic Downtown Sanford, plus lots of overflow parking options in the nearby residential areas as well (note that some parking areas have time limits, so plan accordingly).
