Located around 30 miles northeast from central London, Stansted Airport is an excellent choice for travellers to London on low-cost flights from all around Europe. Moreover, if your destination is Cambridge, then you are much closer to it than from any other London airport. As the capital's third busiest airport, Stansted has all the facilities you would expect from an international airport that annually serves over 24 million passengers. In addition to domestic and European flights, the airport hosts a transatlantic flight to Boston.
The airport was first opened in 1943 as a WW II bomber base for the Royal Air Force and USA Air Forces. After the war, it had several purposes until the Ministry of Civil Aviation made it a base for charter airlines.
One big glass building is divided into three parts; check-ins, departures and arrivals. Gates as such do not exist in the terminal building but are located in three separate satellite buildings connected mostly by jet bridges.
