Stockholm Arlanda Airport (often known simply as Stockholm Airport) is a large, modern international airport located 37 kilometres (23 miles) north of the city centre, close to the town of Märsta and approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-east of Uppsala. It is the largest airport in Sweden and the third-largest in all the Nordic countries. Catering for around 26 million passenger movements each year, it is a hub for Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines, Novair, Finnair, Ryanair and Eurowings, and its ten busiest routes are London, Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Munich, Istanbul and Malaga.
Stylish, airy and very cosmopolitan, the city of Stockholm is everything you might expect from the capital of one of Europe's most sophisticated countries. There's much to see, from the medieval squares and royal buildings of the Old Town to the world-class museums on the islands of Skeppsholmen and Djurgården, not to mention the bars, cafés, restaurants and trendy boutiques of the Gamla Stan. Don't miss the Vasa Museum, one of the great maritime attractions in Europe where visitors can marvel at the sight of a 64-gun battleship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628.
With a car hire from Stockholm Arlanda Airport you can head off into the Swedish countryside and visit dozens of amazing places, such as Drottningholm Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Sigtuna (the oldest town in Sweden) and the ancient city of Uppsala, whose university dates back to the 1400s. Other highlights within easy reach of the Swedish capital are the Viking Settlement of Birch Island (Björkö) and Gripsholm Castle (built in 1537). And if you happen to visiting during the summer months, why not spend the day at Saltsjöbaden, a wonderful seaside resort just a half-hour drive from Stockholm.

Despite the airport's first flight from Bromma to Halmsjön departing on the 26th of November 1954, Stockholm Arlanda wasn't officially inaugurated until 1962. The airport has since grown into a major international air transportation hub with connections to key cities all over the world. Several improvements are underway, including the addition of more hotels, conference facilities, shops, restaurants and creative workspaces.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport has four large passenger terminals (2, 3, 4 and 5). Terminal 2 is one of two international terminals, along with Terminal 5. Terminal 3 handles regional flights, while Terminal 4 mostly caters for domestic flights. Terminal 5 is the second international terminal and also the largest one with the majority of flights from overseas landing there, as well as most charter flights.
Being a major international airport, Stockholm Arlanda is blessed with an abundance of restaurants, cafés, shops, Duty-free stores, baby-changing facilities, massage and spa services, ATMs, a chapel, animal centre and an on-site hairdressing salon. The airport's main attraction for passengers is the Sky City shopping centre which caters for the needs of both travellers and visitors meeting or dropping people off. In a building resembling a hangar, an old aircraft centre offers people the chance to experience the comfort of a plane from the 1930s by climbing aboard and taking a trip back in time to the days when aviation was something revolutionary. Here, everything from advanced home-made models to meticulously-restored commercial aviation equipment is presented to visitors in the form of an exhibition displaying a number of aircraft engines and flight simulators.
For people travelling in and out of the city with their car hire at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the transfer time by road should take around 40-45 minutes, depending on the traffic. The airport is also a hub for ground traffic, with excellent road connections, regular bus routes, long-distance trains, a high-speed rail service (namely the Arlanda Express) and dozens of efficient commuter trains. Travelling by car is equally seamless; you take the E4 southwards all the way. Commuter trains depart twice an hour from Arlanda and take 38 minutes to Stockholm and 18 minutes to Uppsala. Sweden's main train operator (SJ) also stops at Arlanda Central Train Station. Flygbussarna Airport Coaches operate two lines between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Stockholm (Stockholm C and Liljeholmen), with several stops along the way, with a journey time of around 45-50 minutes. Flixbus also connect with Stockholm Arlanda Airport with buses going directly to/from Stockholm C and Liljeholmen several times a day.

If you park in designated street parking, pay close attention to the signs (street parking meters charge by the hour and most take VISA and MasterCard).
