Car hire at Zakynthos Airport - Gateway to the island

Located just 6 kilometres south of the city centre, Zakynthos Airport is one of the busiest airports in Greece with approximately 2 million passenger movements every year. It takes its name from Dionysios Solomos, the famous poet who wrote the Greek national anthem and was born on the island of Zakynthos in 1798. It provides the perfect gateway for people looking to visit the island for a relaxing beach holiday at any time of the year.

Zakynthos is an island in the Ionian Sea located just south of Kefalonia and Lefkas. It is particularly famous for its picture-perfect beaches with clear blue waters and pleasant weather, even in the low season. It has many popular beaches, including Agios Nikolaos, Alykanas and Tsilivi which all are idyllic places and perfect for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying watersports. One of the island's other highlights is Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Cove where a smugglers' ship once ran aground on the sandbank to provide today's visitors with quite a spectacular tourist attraction!

With a car hire from Zakynthos Airport you can explore the island in total comfort and entirely at your own pace. Flights are not allowed to land or depart during the night (from 10pm to 5am) because of the endangered loggerhead turtles that lay their eggs at night on the island's beaches. A rental car gives you all the freedom you need to discover the island's sights and beaches.

Make sure to book your cheap car rental at Zakynthos Airport with Auto Europe to get the best rates and service either online or by asking our rental specialists for assistance. Auto Europe works with the world's leading car rental agencies to provide you with the best car hire experiences. Terminal

Zakynthos Airport has one large and very spacious passenger terminal building which has been extensively renovated in recent years. The new-look terminal was officially inaugurated towards the end of 2020 with around 20 check-in desks and a number of modern improvements, including several added facilities and amenities.

    Airport Facilities

Passengers arriving at Zakynthos Airport will find a good selection of on-site facilities, including numerous ATMs, bureaux de change, luggage trolleys, baby-changing area, first-aid post and a lost and found section. Travellers can enjoy the true taste of the Mediterranean at Hellenic where a wide selection of hot dishes are made with fresh ingredients from traditional recipes. Panopolis is another good choice for freshly-baked pies and other pastries. For fresh coffee, many passengers head for Mi Cafetal, which specialises in espressos and cappuccinos from selected varieties made with 100% Arabica coffee. Like all international airports, ZTH has a large Duty-free shop selling perfumes, cosmetics, confectionery, gourmet products, toys, electronics, tobacco, spirits and all the latest fashion items such as sunglasses, watches, accessories, etc. The airport also offers free, unlimited Wi-fi to all its passengers.

The access roads are well signposted and traffic is light, except during the peak holiday season. Furthermore, there is an efficient public bus route that links the airport with the rest of the island, including Zakynthos Town close by (please note that the bus stop is located in front of the main terminal and you can purchase tickets directly from the driver). A taxi service is also available 24/7 and the journey from the airport to the city of Zakynthos normally takes around 15-20 minutes.

    Parking Tips

Most people who rent a car at Zakynthos Airport normally head into town to visit the main tourist attractions, some of which have their own car parks. It's possible to find a free on-street parking space with time and patience, even in the street alongside the main seaside promenade. Several mid-sized car parks in and around the centre of town operate 24/7 and offer safe parking at a reasonable price. The airport itself has a conveniently-located car park next to the main passenger terminal building with direct access and designated space for drivers with reduced mobility.
