" My flight was schedule to land at 0:25 am on 28 June. The scheduled pick-up time was 0:30 am. The flight was delayed at the last moment, and it landed around 2:30 am. The mai reason why I picked Royal Rent was because they were advertised as open 24/7. When I arrived there, the office was closed, and nobody was answering the phone. I have little children (aged 10 and 8 respectively) so I was standing with my whole family in front of their office unable to reach them. I tried to call Auto Europe on the emergency number to explain my situation and get support. The lady who answered the phone refused to listen to me and told me that, unless I had an accident, she will not help me. I could barely understand her speaking English. I had to rent a car for that night from another company nearby (Monza) which was indeed opened 24/7. Next morning, I returned the Monza-rented car and pick-up the car from Royal Rent. I presented to the gentleman at the counter the invoice from Monza (110 euro) asking for a refund and he categorically denied. He accused me that I did not inform him about the delay. When I booked the car, I have indicated the flight number so he could very easily check the status of the flight. He told me that he has a family and cannot stay late at night despite the fact that the office was advertised as permanently opened. "

" We picked up our Citroen DS3 on Tuesday 17th June at Chania airport. This was a quick and efficient process. On the third day of our holiday the car failed to start. After several attempts, the engine eventually engaged. The same thing happened the following day but this was at a fairly remote spot and in the evening. This was very disturbing and we called the emergency contact line but after a brief conversation with someone who had very poor English, he hung up. We tried again the following day, in office hours. After the third attempt, we were able to speak to someone who agreed to send out a mechanic. This was quite efficient and mechanic arrived on motor bike within the hour. He advised that we needed a replacement vehicle. This was relayed back to the Budget desk at the airport . The person that we spoke to was very unhelpful and very rude. Despite the help of the mechanic, who was still with us, he insisted that we should drive the car back to the airport, which was approximately an hour away, and let them decide whether we should be given another car. Eventually, having remonstrated with the employee, he hung up on us. The mechanic called back for us and it was eventually agreed that the car would be collected by low loader and that a taxi would be sent for me to go to the airport to collect another car. This took up most of a valuable day of our holiday. The car was replaced be a higher grade car and we experienced no further problems with it. Not only did we lose a day of our holiday but it was, overall, a very stressful experience. Our Villa was quite remote on the edge of a village and we were completely dependent on transport for supplies. At one point when heading out to a restaurant in the evening, we thought that we would be without food as the car failed to start. When it did eventually start,we had the worry of being stranded and not able to get home. This would not have been such an issue for us if we had experienced a better response from Budget but we found their attitude to be completely unacceptable. "

" To whom it may concern, I would like to make a formal complaint about the treatment and service we received on our recent trip to Greece. Car collected on the 23rd May 2025. I booked my car on January 13th 2025, my car wiz booking reference was #25-06-168. On arrival at the Carwiz office at Chania, it was a long process. After a 30 minute wait for my car, I was taken to a car that was smaller than what I had paid for. The car I was given, a Citreon C3, was highly damaged (photos attached) and not what I was expecting. I was travelling with friends and they had paid for a smaller car and they received a newer version of the same car as me. After talking to my wife, I queried the car I received. I was told by the manager of the office that the car I was given, the Citreon C3, was not the car I had reserved and not the size reserved. I queried why if this was the case that I was given this car. No reason was given. I asked for an alternative car, and was reluctantly given an alternative, also in poor condition. It was made clear that this was my only choice. It is disappointing to say the least, as my previous experience was very positive and why I chose to use Carwiz again. How is it possible that the incorrect car was provided when it was booked in January for a May collection? How can you as a company provide cars that are in such poor condition? Why was I knowingly given a car that was not the correct one? I would like to request a refund of the full costs for this rental, as it was a situation where the correct rental car was not provided. I look forward to hearing from you. "

" First time I've used Carwiz. Booked a compact car for 8 days, they gave my a 5 door Corsa with approx 74000 kms on the clock. I had no problems at all with the car. The car had a few scratches and dents on the body and wheel hubs but we photographed every panel and the wheel hubs. We bought our own excess insurance in the UK ( Its a lot cheaper) and Carwiz withheld 500 euros on my credit card to cover part of the excess which I expected. The tank was 3/4 full ( again we took a photo) and we returned it 3/4 full. Carwiz took 5 minutes to check the car and released the 500 euros. Would I book with Carwiz in Chania Crete again, Yes. Follow the rules and you should be ok. "

Tried to sell me an enhanced recovery advising they would otherwise take up to 72 hours to come out to any breakdown. Refused this and advised I would leave the car where it was in this case. Checks for the handover were very odd . Car was not in good shape with high miles stained seats and quite a few scrapes . Agent seemed to place a heavy focus on damage to vehicle and there said there were restrictions where car could be used, Office was plastered with signs about number of bags allowed and £150 fee if car was returned dirty with beach sand in it. Seems excessive charge for hoovering. Returned the car as received , same agent proceeded to examine tires underneath of car and bodywork. Then announced I would have to pay for damage to front bumper. After a big argument and speaking to the manger they agreed there was in fact no visible damage to the front of the car. This is awful practice . They seemed to think this was fine as i had excess insurance . Overall bad stressful experience. I do not think you should offer cars from Abby Car "

The response from the roadside assistance team was excellent. The problem was that the air conditioning unit was leaking water due to condensation and it was resolved over the phone without the need for a call out. Abbey Car, however, requested €40 on arrival at the desk to guarantee roadside assistance within 3 hours. Otherwise, they explained, it could be a 24 hour wait for assistance. This wasn't clear when booking and actually meant the car wasn't as competitively priced as other companies and not the great value I thought it was. I felt conned at the desk and paid the €40. Although Abbey Care were overall v good, because of this issue, I will probably not book with Abbey Car again. "

The Fiat Panda had lots of small scratches and dents, so checking all of these on collection was practically impossible. Car supplied had 3/4 of fuel and EXER said return with 3/4 fuel. It was supposed to be Full to Full. How do you fill a fuel tank to only 3/4? "

" We were very disappointed to arrive and be told that the hybrid car we booked was not available (despite booking in advance) and we got a 'free upgrade to a Citron C3 - which was not a free upgrade as I paid £30 extra in the first place to get a Hybrid car to save on petrol. So the 'free' upgrade that we did not want cost us £30. The manager Theodore would not accept our point of view on this and was very forceful in the delivery telling us with a smirk 'I will just cancel the booking and you can go somewhere else' like that was a great option when we had just walked from the airport (no transfer, we had to walk in 35 degrees heat with our suitcases) and then he wanted us to trawl round for another rental car which he knew full well we wouldn't get for the same price. He accused a member of our party of swearing when the words were "you don't like the FACT we don't agree with you" this was a very cheap accusation to make and he only admitted fault in making the accusation because our whole party had heard what was said. No aggression was used, he just did not like a woman telling him in a stern manner that we were not happy. It was a nightmare. He finally agreed to give us 2 bars of petrol and promised to ring us the next day to let us know if the hybrid car came back and was available, he didn't bother ringing us. The only good part was dropping the car back off when Theodore wasn't there and the nice pleasant woman was there and we had an easy time handing it back and getting our £290 deposit refunded. "

" The car was misfiring so very sliggish. Also, there was no spare wheel and the ones on the car were not run flats. I was informed if I had a puncture it was on me, callout had 2 options, option one was to pay an additional 40 euro and they would come out within 3 hours and option 2 was they would come out in 24 hours and charge 300 euors, this is not acceptable, there should be a spare or run flats. Also, option 2 meant if the car broke down or was in an accident and no longer fir for the road they would not provide a replacement. When I returned the car she tried to say I had damaged the boot, luckily I had taken photos when I collected it, which showed it was already damaged "

The front left indicator bulb was broken when I got the car and only realised after I set off. " Booked as suggested car was Renault Clio. Was more expensive than others which seemed to be offering smaller 4 door cars. The car available, as apparently they had no Clio left, was a Suzuki Swift. I wouldn't have booked with them had I known. New member of staff, while very nice, had to check multiple times with colleague meaning almost 30 minutes pick up time. On return accused of being 1.5 hours late, even though I wasn't. Was asked to provide rental agreement not booking. I had photo of it. After some discussion he had the rental agreement of a different customer. When returning the car the staff member used his hand to check for scrapes on the underside of the front. Without a ramp when I collected the car I have no idea how i could have checked this area. It was ok but illustrated to me how they seemed to operate. The car had lots of marks on it meaning checking the car when picking up took too long. All the money others have no doubt been charged clearly hadn't been used to fix the car up. I had to state multiple times I didn't want extra insurance. "

" According to the current guidance on Gov.UK a UK drivers licence is all that is required to drive in Greece. An IDP is not required. Nowhere in your voucher notes did it say a paper licence was any different to a photo card licence. Nearly all the hire companies in Crete will only accept photo card licences. There was one company that would hire a car to me using just my paper licence but at four times the cost of the car I had booked through you. "

The gear box missed gears, the engine was pathetically under powered and keyless entry did not work. It barely made it up the steep roads. This car is fir only for the scrap heap and in our opinion was dangerous to drive.the steering also tracked right. "

On pick up for getting all the paperwork done felt like a very obstructive member of staff, when trying to explain that the original credit card had been lost it lead to a very repetitive conversation which I was having to offer all the options solutions and just being asked for the lost credit card which i explained was impossible. Then they refused to take payment with a debit card with my name on, refused to take a credit card with anothers name on despite being part of the booking party, refused to then accept adding the second person as a named driver despite being willing to pay and use the credit car with their name on then. Eventually leading full circle to my original offer of paying with a debit card with my name on. Then on checking of car there was a significant chip and damage to the windowscreen, on asking if this was road legal we were dismissed and when asking if another similar car was available(of which there was >10 cars in the yard which i appreciate may have been booked ) we were immediately dismissed out of hand. Then for the damage check we had to insist on a new form as the carwiz provider immediately signed with no inspection of the car despite the above windowscreen damage and multiple scratches and dents to the car and wheels, I had the feeling we had no just been perceived as difficult and obstructive despite this being well within our rights and the whole point of the process. To top it off the car was parked in the corner between two other cars at right angles needing the wing-mirrors to be pushed in to even get out of the space. Would certainly avoid in future and will not be recommending friends/family based of this awful experience. "

The breaks were in a bad way - sounded like metal rubbing metal when we breaded. Upon returning the car even though all the scratches were marked on the paperwork they tried to say we had scratched it even more. Finally when the manager came to inspect he agreed that they were old scratches as most had small amounts of rust. "

" There were some aspects of the hire that I was not happy with. Firstly, the pick up point is about 400 yards from the airport terminal and this can be tiring in the Cretan sun. Secondly, the fuel policy is meant to be full to full but my hire car was only half full; it is very difficult to gauge exactly the right amount to fill up when returning the car so that you are not either penalised for underfilling or giving the hire company free fuel. Thirdly, there was nobody at the kiosk when I returned the car. "

" We rented a car from this firm and were concerned at the hard-sell tactics used to persuade us that we need to take out their premium extra cover even though we had a separate cdw policy. We are experienced renters and always use a separate cdw policy, but we were almost taken in by hard sell tactics which claimed that "lost hire costs" (ie the hire income the firm would have earned if our car was off the road as a result of needing repair) would not be covered by our separate cdw, and was never included in these policies. A very nice smooth talking young man almost persuaded us to pay as much as the two weeks basic rental (£300) for extra cover. When we checked later with our insurance they confirmed that these costs were indeed covered by our separate cdw, as is standard in most such policies. We did not appreciate being hard sold extra charges on the basis of basically false information "

I have twice emailed and requested a refund and twice so far been given feeble excuses and not been offered a refund . I have done nothing wrong in refusing the rental from Exer and am very disappointed at this stage to have to fight my case when it is plainly obvious a refund should have been offered immediately. I expect a positive response in the near future . "

The car was in good condition but quite old stereo with no even bluetooth connection which for a holiday car would have been nice to use the phone to listening music. " Carwiz seemed a little disorganised. The car pick up was ok and I paid locally for a GPS which wasn't in the car and I had to go back into the office to get it. Then it turned out the didn't have a mount for the GPS and we ended up having to cancel that and refund the payment from 10 mins before. Also, the office was closed when returning the car..... just after midday. I and another Customer had to leave the cars without a proper check-in and post the keys in a drop box. I did take multiple photos of the car as I returned it...... in the same condition as at pick-up. I've emailed carwiz.gr on Friday 6th asking they acknowledge completion of the rental with no excess charges but still waiting for a response. "

" 1 - I don't understand why - when i have already provided everything online - it takes soooo long to 'check in' and actually get the car. Had to provide all the details again, then sign multiple forms, and wait ages while the guy tapped away on a computer. In the 21st century things like this should be quick and easy 2 - The guy at Global tried to sell me an upgraded car. I declined, but got the upgraded car anyway. That's great and all, but in retrospect it looked very much like i was being 'shaken down' to pay for something i was going to get all along anyway 3 - the guy at Global tried to sell me extra insurance. I showed him that i already had it, but he tried the hard sell telling me that 'the slightest scratch will cost between 300-700 euros'. I didn't take it out. In any case, the car was absolutely covered with scratches already ! 4 - As we drove away we could see that the tyre pressure warning light was on, so we had to turn around within 100m of the Global office, wait another 20mins while the guy sorted out another customer, before being told that the tyre pressures were ok and the light had simply not been reset 5 - The guy at Global tried to charge me 25 euros because we were at the office after 9pm. I offered him 25 euros in coins (which he didn't seem impressed with), i complained about the payment and he cancelled it eventually, mumbling something about 'should have already gone home an hour ago'. Not my problem ! The whole pick-u experience was pretty exhausting, after having been on the go for almost 12 hours, not what you want when it's 9:30pm and you just want to get to your hotel. On the flip-side, price was great, and dropping off was a breeze. "

" Booked the car for the 21.00 slot. The pick up desk is not where specified - it is not where the other arrival Hall rental desks are it is approx 150m away outside and not easy to find. I arrived at approx 21.15(next bookable slot was 21.30). I was told i was late (any time after 21.00!) and owed a late pick up fee off €25. This wasn't made clear before I booked. The fuel was not full to full as advertised - it was 5/6 full and I was told to bring back the same. I protested as I find this super annoying (the car was 6/6 when returned it). I was told nothing could be done. The clutch travel on the car was also ridiculous (the clutch was virtually the whole way out at the biting point) but I had little alternative. It was a cheap hire but I did expect a desk inside the terminal, a F2F fuel policy and a car that was reasonable to drive. I also didn't expect to pay €25 for being on time. "

Luckily I took photos of the car when we took it and just as well because he was even questioning bits that were marked on his paper. He pointed at bits and said "do you have photo of that?" and I did ask "why am I doing your job for you?". I think that they should take photos when you hire it and not hope that you don't so they can clobber you for damage that was already there. The fact that there is already damage also suggests that someone will have been charged for it - but it hasn't been repaired. So a nice little extra earner. Get it all fixed (perhaps) at the end of a seasons having charged for 3 different repairs, "

We were not the only one. Many other customers were also being turned away for no good reason. Despite not renting us a car they still took our money refusing to give a refund. Those who did manage to get a car were being threatened that they had to return it immaculate inside and out. Very unpleasant and unhelpful staff. On hand over photos were taken of the car and on return the car was checked for new damage and then signed off. (Small chips and scatches up to about an inch are ignored). One little niggle. The car was displaying a tyre pressure warning light but when I raised the matter it was quickly resolved (by inflating the tyres). However it should really have been fixed before handling the car over to me. Also I had to ask for fire extinquisher and first aid kit which the RAC say are compulsory in Greece (although Alamo said they were not). "

During the check in process I was told a blatant lie that the inclusive relax insurance already purchased via Auto Europe did not fully cover us in the event of an accident as we would not get a copy of a Police report so would not get a refund from Auto Europe ( to cover our excess,) She even went as far as telling me Auto Europe gave me incorrect information- I showed the documents and pointed out refund information. She then offered a free ( end of season offer) of an up graded car- full tank of petrol ,return empty, and I could have full insurance to cover everything for 320 euro !! Note: this is a free upgrade!!!! Obviously I declined and said I was satisfied with the existing vehicle and the contract with Auto Europe- She then started chatting in Greek to her colleagues and we knew it was along the lines of " Oh well I did try, but could not con them" the others then started laughing!. I had read previous reviews of this practice by Goldcar, but that was customers who dealt direct. By going via Auto Europe I would have thought it would not happen, obviously it is common practice and they try it every time they think someone is gullable or unsuspecting!. She also said my credit card deposit would be held for 1 month after returning the car - why ? Surely if the car is returned in the condition it was collected it should be returned immediately. "

" First of all it was not clear at Chania Airport where the Goldcar site was. We had to ask several people who in the end told us a mini bus would take us to the site. This didn't arrive so our son, who had hired a car with a different company, took us. The pick up procedure took a very long time and the staff member didn't give us our contract. They then called us after about twenty minutes into our journey to say we had to go back to collect it. We had a long way to go, it was dark and by this time the whole procedure had already taken three hours from landing. The car itself was much smaller than the one I booked and was very damaged. It drove really poorly so we didn't feel safe in it at all. We spent until Wednesday worrying about our lack of contract and had no response from Goldcar about it. It was only when Auto Europe got involved that we managed to have it e mailed to us. We are very appreciative of Auto Europe help and would book through them again but definitely not Goldcar. "

Abbycar were quick to point to the T&C's stating the credit card had to be in the bookers name which was mine. I wanted to book the extra driver, my wife, for just two weeks instead of the three weeks of the car rental as the car was parked in Khora Sfakion for a week whilst we were in Loutro. No that was impossible. My wife drove the car for just one day throughout the three weeks car rental. Almost £100 extra just for the one day that my wife drove. Expensive indeed. "

One front wheel cover was damaged and curved out / was not properly fitted inside the rim / and was fixed with a single cable tie. From time to time she was switching to Greek language with her colleague (tall girl). Her grumpy face expressions and body language made me and my family very unwelcome. " Driving abroad might seem daunting to a lot of people, they drive on the other side of the road! I have always found the roads to be very quiet other than in major town centres and parking may be an issue but as long as you have your site about you you should be fine. "

After wasting all the next day trying to get the car we booked we ended up with a slightly dilapidated Suzuki Vitara that was obviously well overdue to be replaced. The wiper blades did not clear the screen during cleaning, you see very little rain in Crete, if any, but even so they did not function as they should. For a car that has only done 58,000 miles the engine had a measured reduction in power when accelerating in 3rd and 4th gear to a point where it was wasting fuel asking the engine to accelerate, fuel economy was therefore greatly reduced because of this.
