    Driving Information in Jamaica

    Driving Licence Requirements

    The driving licence requirements in Jamaica state that you must be at least 18 years old and have a full driving licence valid in your country of residence.

    Age Rstrictions

    To hire a car and drive in Jamaica, you must hold a full UK driving license which has been valid for at least 12 months. Drivers must be 25 or over and all car hire companies will charge a 15% general consumption tax.

    Road Rules and Petrol Stations

    • Driving in Jamaica is on the left hand side of the road.

    • Seat belts when driving a hire car in Jamaica are mandatory.

    • Honking is an acceptable way to make other drivers aware of you or to indicate that you are planning on taking them over.

    • Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid driver's licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

    • There are many petrol stations in Jamaica. They supply 87 Gas Octane, 90 Gas, Diesel and E10. Most Petrol Station only take cash, so make sure you carry enough.

    Tolls

    Highway 2000 is a toll road. You can pay the toll by cash or by a TAG card. If you choose cash payment you must have your money ready. If you do not have exact change, the Jamaica toll booth operators will give you change, however if you do not have enough cash you will be refused entry and will have to use the reverse lane to turn around and go back. If you choose a prepaid TAG card then you can use the special TAG-only lanes that scan your card and then take exact payments so you can move quickly through the toll road.

    Parking Information

    In the main cities of Kingston and Montego Bay, the town centres are often very busy, so car parking can be limited. Be careful about where you park your car in Kingston and other cities, as many people double park their cars in order to get a space.

    One-Way Car Hire

    Jamaica travel is not permitted outside of Jamaica. Domestic one-way car hire is permitted with a three day minimum rental requirement and fees may apply (depending on supplier).
