    Driving Licence Requirements

    To drive in Sweden you must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid UK driving licence.

    Age Restrictions

    To hire a car in Sweden, you must be at least 20 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your licence for 2 years. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.

    Road Rules and Petrol Stations

    General Sweden driving information, laws rules and regulations:

    • Driving in Sweden is on the right hand side of the road.

    • Seat belts when driving a hire car in Sweden are mandatory.

    • The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with the exception of a hands-free system.

    • Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid driver’s licence, registration documents and insurance documents.

    • Dipped headlights must be used during the day.

    • Petrol stations in Sweden are open from 7am to 10pm. Automatic pumps, marked 'sedel automat,' operate after business hours and accept cash.


    There are no road tolls in Sweden.

    Parking Information

    Most Swedish cities operate on both metered on-street parking and timed ticket machines from 8am to 6pm. When trying to park your car in Gothenburg, you will notice that on-street parking usually takes place on the right side of the road only. Sweden imposes incredibly high fines for parking violations.

    One-Way Car Hire

    Domestic one-way car hire is available and some routes incur additional return fees. There are fees for international one-way rentals, and not all vehicles are allowed.

    If you plan to drive in Sweden, you can pick the car up in one location and return it to another location but there are some restrictions that you need to check with your car hire supplier.
