" The car malfunctioned dangerously after an hour of driving. The Roadside assistance did not work and I had to carry on driving. The hotel reception where we were staying managed to get through to roadside assistance and the car was collected by a breakdown lorry. The solution late on in the day was for me to take a taxi (at your expense) 3 hours away back to Marseille airport, both not practical and I had been drinking I sent three emails in total to you and made two phone calls to try and sort situation and there have been no answers to my emails. I have had the expense of the car hire which was not acceptable after an hours driving; no car for the remainder of my trip which means we had to take taxis everywhere and finally a very large taxi bill back to Marseille airport to catch a flight home. " The worst experience I have had in hiring a car over 40 years around the world ! The vehicle was unwashed with stained seats and also had numerous dents, scratches and body damage. The vehicle illustration did NOT reflect the damage and when I requested Goldstar to look at the car damage before driving the car away and they refused to come out of the cabin, let alone update the vehicle illustration to show correct position. They simply told us to take photos. I pointed out the damage was extensive but again they refused and when I asked for the persons name serving me he refused and also refused to give me the name of their manager or his contact details. Additionally the dark haired male employee ( who seemed to be the most senior )thought it was also fun to laugh at us with other French customers waiting in the queue with sneering racist reference to us being English. Given we are from Scotland this was doubly unwelcome. As a further example of their incompetence when I added my wife as an additional driver they wrongly showed my name again the additional driver on the contract. I pointed this out to them and they said it didn't matter! I had to repeatedly demand / insist they reprint the contract with both drivers correctly shown. As a final point in terms off feedback their customer service highlight was for each of the giggling members of their team of 4 to serve one person then disappear into the back room for 5 mins. They took it in turn to do this despite the Queue growing larger by the minute. It took us 2 hours from arriving at the Goldstar cabin at the airport to finally drive away. A total shambles and can I suggest our experience is brought to the attention of their CEO from who we deserve an unreserved personal apology? "

" Scammers. On returning the vehicle they claimed I had damaged plastic under the bumper. I had driven it twice 200k each way largely motorway without incident or damage. It was parked in a private drive way. for 4 days. I had full insurance and excess cover so whatever they claimed would be paid, (perhaps they knew this) but for them to claim it was us do damaged the back end was a lie. This was a scam and they charged my card euro 260. When I picked up the car they were high pressure selling asking for euro 210 for fuel and insurance and not to charge for me using a debit card. I refused this, but I guess their scam go a payout in the end. I will never use Goldcard again, and I suggest you as a booking agent never use them. The web is full of similar stories. This scam cost me noting (as long as the insurer pays up) but if they do it to others who are innocent of causing damage that's bad. The quality of the car was poor. Lots of scratches and old and used. they said it was "going back to tyhe manufacturer" after our hire because it was so old "

" It was really easy to pick up the car, but the car itself did not drive nicely. The brakes did not feel safe, but when collecting the car it was clear there weren't many options so I didn't go back to complain. I was told to take pictures of the car as there were definitely damages that hadn't been recorded, so I took many pictures - and I'm glad I did! The petrol also wasn't entirely full, as only about 10 minutes after we left the airport the petrol gauge was no longer at 'full' which is really unusual for an actual full car of petrol. When returning the car, I mentioned the petrol issue and that the car was covered in scrapes/dents that hadn't been reported. Most importantly, I reported that the brakes hadn't felt safe a lot of the time. The person checked over the car and specifically checked that one issue with a tyre, where there was quite a significant damage to the tyre, had existed before we collected it. The pictures confirmed that it did and the person apologised profusely and then marked that the car needed to go straight to the garage. I was frustrated that we had clearly been rented a car that was then not safe to rent out in the same condition has we had driven it. I would have complained more but our flight was too soon! "

" I was also told that the car (Fiat 500) I had hired would not make it to Isola even though I saw many such cars on the journey. I was therefore forced to pay for an upgrade to a different vehicle. The upgraded vehicle looked like it had already been in several scraps judging by its appearance. "

I found this in the terms and conditions eventually in tiny print on the third page. I had no choice but to take it as I had to get to my very unwell stepfather in hospital. They 'upgraded' my car to an automatic with 60,000 on the clock that stank of cigarettes. " When I booked the car in December, I selected a European. When I got to Nice airport I saw from my Voucher it was a Gold Car. Staff were pleasant and it was not busy. They warned me the car had a lot of marks on it and that they didn't have another car to offer me.. When we were taken upstairs to the car I was dismayed to see the condition of the car. Every panel had a a dent or scratch on it. It had over 76,000 kms on the clock. The gear box was extremely stiff and difficult to change gears. Any speed over 60 km per hour meant the the steering wheel became quite wobbly and I felt unsafe. The tyres were very worn and I was worried about grip especially as it was raining. From 5th February every day until the day I left on 16th February, I either rang or emailed Auto Europe. Someone finality called me back on my last day. There was nothing they could do so I had to drive 160 kms back to Nice airport in a very old. and damaged car with worn tyres. They recommended I complain on. my return. I have taken pictures of all my concerns. The inside of the car. was. dirty. and very worn. I can't tell you how unhappy I was with this wreck of a. car. I. have used Auto Europe many times and have never had this problem. I would never choose to rent from Gold. Car as I know they. have a terrible reputation. . I would like a. refund please. "

" I was supposed to be travelling with friends to marseille but had to delay because on my mother in laws funeral. I did not change the date by losing the first day's hire as it seemed simpler to pick up car a day late and return on the arranged day as my colleague could go into gold car and explain the next day pick up! He was referred to the broker auto europe. He was informed as the collection window was open we could not collect car next day and booking and money was lost! No solution was offered and the lady at the other end of call was not interested. I am still at a loss to understand why a fully paid for car could not be kept for 1 day till I arrived to collect it. I did try to change date on web but obviously unsuccessfully. "

" Appalling. We use Goldcar every year, this year will be our last. On arrival to collect our car, parked outside, we were informed that our booking had been cancelled. I had made an oversight, booking it 6 hours before our arrival to ensure it would be ready. Despite the fact the car was in the parking lot and we were happy to pay an admin fee we were told we could not reactivate our booking, loosing our booking money. What is more if we wanted to hire the SAME car it would now cost us £1200. As a young family, on our only holiday of the year, we could not afford this. So at 10 pm with two young children we had to walk across the airport car parks to find somewhere to stay. A night's accommodation then cost us £400. The following morning we had to return to Goldcar to rehire a cheaper car which was covered in bumps and scratches, in very poor condition. A number of the scratches had not been accounted for on the paperwork and the administrator assured us they would be added. On returning our vehicle the goldcar 'checking' person started to point out all the bumps and scratches on the car and implied WE had caused them and would be charged. In fact, we hardly drove the vehicle. I cannot believe how utterly poor and scandalous your business model is. You attract customers with your low fares only to recoup your profits through small print and an inefficient vehicle check program. "

Goldcar tried to force me into paying an additional 160+ euros for insurance when I already had full coverage with autoeurope. They then made me pay a full holding deposit on the spot in full on my card in Australian dollars, not euros, even though I repeatedly asked to have it charged in Euros. They refunded the deposit minus $152 even though there were no charges. The woman at the counter was rude and arrogant and made the whole interaction unpleasant and difficult. She was quite haughty because I wanted the smallest car and didn't want to upgrade to a larger car .. my choice because of the narrow roads and limited parking. I don't deserve attitude about it. I asked to speak with another person as she was so unpleasant to deal with and they refused. This rental cost me double what I agreed to because of their unscrupulous deposit policy ... no idea how that is legal not to refund the amount they initially charged. I watched customer after customer get scammed in the same way. Big mistake .. and i could have used a reputable company for far less. You shouldn't deal with them as it damages your brand. Rude, arrogant counter staff who were quite haughty because I wanted the smallest car and didn't want to upgrade to a larger car .. my choice because of the narrow roads and limited parking. i don't deserve attitude about it. This rental cost me double what I agreed to because of their unscrupulous deposit policy ... no idea how that is legal not to refund the amount they initially charged. I watched customer after customer get scammed in the same way. Big mistake .. and i could have used a reputable company for far less. You shouldn't deal with them as it damages your brand. "

The staff must have checked the car whilst we were in transit and by the time we arrived in the UK we had been charged 60 Euros (10 for petrol and 50 as a "penalty").We have sent Goldcar an email explaining the issue and three petrol receipts: one for 37 Euros from the previous evening (prior to leaving for the airport to drive 50mins) and two at 04.00 am in in the morning of the return, totalling a further 24 Euros. We have not yet had a response however I am sure our claim for reimbursement will be unfairly rejected. "

" My google review of Goldcar Marseille; I have used Goldcar many times in the past with no issues but this particular branch clearly try to find things they can charge you for and take great pride in doing so. We took the car and were told it was brand new (it wasn't, it had 4,000km+ on the clock) with no damage. When we returned it they found a TINY (less than 5cm - see photo) scratch on the underside of the bumper. We'd had no incidents in the car so could not have been done by us and it is questionable that something like this should even be charged, however the member of staff to great satisfaction in finding this (must be on commission!). I refused to sign the return form and tried to discuss this with the staff in the office but they said they would submit to Customer Service who would resolve the issue with me. I have since been charged 260 EUROS and had no response from customer service at all! Despite following up numerous times I am still waiting for someone to get back to me. I've had good experiences with Goldcar elsewhere but due to the petty nature of this branch I will never be using them again, and neither should you! The photo shows a UK passport for scale which is 8cm wide, and if you look hard enough you can just about see the scratch that they have charged me 260 euros for! This is AT MOST 4.5cm and barely visible for the most part. Goldcar should be ashamed, trying to make additional profit by charging their customers for things like this! "

In the end they gave up but I get the impression the collection agents are targeted to find things that can be charged for. I think this is really unacceptable practice. "

Despite explaining again and again I had 12 months cover from the RAC. Again, However, The most ridiculous part was that I had to return the car to the airport to resign the document. This was a 4 hour round trip, plus fuel and Tolls, both ways. I challenged this also with the Auto Europe Help Desk? and they said there was nothing they could do. They claimed it was illegal to drive the car we booked on your site to Andorra. In addition they then wanted a 2000 Euro deposit on our credit card as well as the extra charge for driving in Andorra and the extra £400 for a vehicle with snow tyres. We were totally aghast and not happy. Then the manager came to deal with us as we kept saying that it was quite clear we had booked a car on your site clearly stating we were going to Andorra and you had charged us the price we paid knowing full well we were travelling to Andorra. Goldcar kept insisting we couldn't take that car without snow tyres and without paying a 2000 euro deposit. Yet Autoeurope took our money at the point of booking and failed to tell us that we would need to pay a daily charge when we stated we were going to Andorra, never mentioned we were meant to have snow tyres and also never said they would want to take 2000 euro deposit. Your email said a credit card block of 1100 Euro would be required. We ended up having to take some insurance policy there so had to spend around 350 euro extra in order to avoid the 2000 Euro credit card charge. We were totally and utterly misold by your website. I cannot believe that you can sell us a car rental then we are expected to add on extra charges just to be able to drive the car away. " I booked the car via Auto Europe as the advert suggested an Opel Mokka or similar vehicle. What I ended up with was an old, Spanish registered Peugeot 2008 which was not the current model. I had problems engaging reverse gear. Damage to the bodywork was identified during the pick-up process that had not been previously recorded and when I returned the car the member of staff who checked the car pointed out the same damage and said I would be held liable unless I had a photograph of the car at pick-up. I showed her the email I received with the updated Damage record. Not the best experience. "

I understand that there is a number to call on the voucher in these situations, but like I have said above, I was in a difficult situation and just wanted to be on my way. I think autoeurope should either not be offering the extra insurance, if it is well known that local care hire desks will simply say it's not valid (and say so quite vociferously). Or, autoeurope should have a better relationship with the hire companies on its website, such that it's selling of the extra insurance is easily accepted with the local company. I understand that the local company is also responsible in this situation as well, and have left a review to that effect about Goldcar. "

Went to collect the vehicle and there was one staff member on the entire third floor to check the condition of the car and provide car seats, this meant a long wait in 40 degree heat with 2 small children. The car seat I was given was broken (bearing in mind I had paid for the privilege and it was nearly £100 to rent it!) I returned the seat and it was put back in the pile it came from for some other poor person to use. The second car seat was fine, basic and from Aldi but fine. The woman who served me was rather abrupt and didn't appear to speak very good english. I found the process of walking around the car together quite stressful as the car was quite dented and scratched already and the woman didn't seem to understand that I wanted to make sure it was all marked down. In the stress of trying to complete all this we forgot to check the fuel gauge which having filled it up to full on our return we are now sure it wasn't given to us in full, we have no photo evidence of this so couldn't raise it with anyone, lesson learnt for us. The drop off experience was much better and smoother. If the same experience had been for collection I would definitely use Gold Car again. The exterior of the car was pretty poor, a lot of scratches and dents and paint missing and alloy damage. The interior of the car was in near perfect condition and the boot space was ample. "

" As mentioned above, I paid extra for the additional cover offered by Auto Europe, under the impression that it would provide additional protection and assistance through Goldcar. However, once at the rental counter, it became clear that this additional cover from Auto Europe was not connected to Goldcar at all and would not actually cover me/provide assistance in the event of an accident or breakdown. It would only refund a partial amount of any excess claimed by Goldcar, and as Goldcar would retain all of the deposit (€1150) plus charge the cost of any repairs (starting at €260 for a scratch) if anything happened, I would have been massively out of pocket whilst waiting to see what amount would be refunded back to me by Auto Europe. Breakdown assistance was also not included and would have been at my expense. Therefore, I had to purchase the "mega relax" package for piece of mind that brought the overall cost of the rental up to in line with the most expensive packages advertised on Auto Europe. It probably would have been worth choosing one of these initially, instead of thinking that we were getting a really good deal to only need to spend double the amount unexpectedly. More clarity or options should be displayed at the time of booking. In any case, the additional cover offered by Auto Europe does not seem to provide much in the way of peace of mind. "

" There is no word to say how terrible this experience has been. Aside from being defrauded by Auto Europe, paying for an insurance that didn't cover what I was told it would on the website and having to pay for a second insurance to make sure I was covered, which doubled the price of my reservation, and being misled by your website that didn't state anywhere that Goldcar doesn't take Amex, the worst of this whole experience is the shocking customer service. They were extremely rude (I can say that this is by far the worst customer service I have ever received, and this says a lot, as I find that the quality of customer service has gone down across the board over the past 10-15 years) and extremely unhelpful. The person who helped me at the counter of Goldcar even tried to speak to your CS, as she was sorry for me that I had been misled and essentially defrauded by Auto Europe, and she was herself shocked at the rudeness and unhelpfulness of your CS - I am sure she will also talk about this experience to her customers in the future, so that's three detractors in one experience, as my 20-year-old niece witnessed this horror show as well. Your CS blamed me for not reading your website, while there is no mention of Goldcar not accepting Amex on it - which is therefore voluntary, to scam your customers. This experience was sickening for the three of us, and I will contact customer associations to relate my story. Of course, I will also tell my story to people I know as well as online review websites. This scam has to stop. "

She also looked up on the small print of Auto Europe and confirmed that although you are claiming that I am purchasing a full cover, I am only paying for 3rd party cover (biggest scam ever) so I had to pay for insurance again to be covered properly (essentially paying insurance twice, which doubled the amount of my reservation). " I have used Autoeurope successfully for about twenty years but I am appalled by my experience with you this time. Because my flight was delayed and I would be late collecting the car I called Autoeurope. Your staff, nor I, could contact Goldcar Nice as only number they had was a call centre in Paris which wasn't open on Saturday! I may not have worried so much if I could have put the flight number into the booking form and they could have checked the flight was delayed, but it wouldn't accept it. I was told by three different Autoeuope staff that Goldcar would not hold the car, but give it to someone else if they came to the counter despite it being paid for and between 2 and 3 hours late, not an excessive delay. Cristina told me I would have to rebook to be sure of having a car. Which I did, and it was very stressful trying to do so whilst listening out for information regarding changing planes and walking to a different gate due to the original plane's technical fault. When I arrived at Goldcar they informed me that their policy was to hold the car for 6 hours after the stated collection time which I discovered is common practice. Why are all your staff so misinformed, saying they definitely wouldn't keep the car after the collection time? At least Cristina was helpful, the first two men were anything but and couldn't have cared less. Fortunately it was only £6 more, but it was £6 I shouldn't have had to pay. It was the stress of cancelling and rebooking and wondering if I was going to be without a car or have to pay a lot more, which I could not afford which was most upsetting and unnecessary. "

At the start of this rental I checked the car and found a very large scratch on the rear wheel arch, which I reported to the employee and it was registered appropriately. However, I did not check closely enough the alloy wheels and did not notice a scratch on one of the front wheels. This was damage that was NOT caused by me and unfortunately I had no way to prove it, so it was registered as my fault on return and Goldcar have now charged me 420 Euros - that is outrageous. I complained at Nice airport and the manager said there's nothing he could do, but that I had insurance via my Auto Europe rental and could claim it back. This seems like a very callous practice by Goldcar whereby they do not spend the time to do their own checking of cars in the hope that customers will not pick up damage when they are checking the cars at pickup, just so that they can charge them on return when it's not their fault. Goldcar should accept some form of responsibility for this and take more care in checking the cars for damage before they hand them over to customers. "

" We arrived at the Goldcar desk at Nice Airport and queued for a while and then were requested to to go to their desk in the car-park. After queuing again were then advised that the reimbursement of the excess which I paid to yourselves was "useless" and was very strongly advised I take their own insurance cover to the extent of having full cover whereby I pay nothing if the car was damaged by me. Being tired and hot after travelling and waiting for about an hour in the heat I took their advice after being severely pressured. this cost me another 223.96 euros above the hire fee I had paid to you. I did note that whilst waiting another customer refused to take out the car allocated for some reason. After arriving at the allocated car it was full of dents and scratches and as such it would have been impossible to identify any damage imposed by myself and that done before I hired the car. I thus refused to take the car out. I was then offered what they said was the only other available car (a Peugeot 208) which they said had not been checked as it had only just come in. It was thus very dirty outside andinside with sand on the seats but in reality I had no choice but to take this car. After travelling a short distance westwards on the I mentioned to my wife that it appeared the fuel tank had not been full when we took the car as the gauge was off the "full mark" and over such a short distance it should not have been and after arriving at our destination (95 km from Nice Airport)it was reading below the three quarter mark. My experience tells me it should not have been. When we were returning the car we filled the fuel tank to the underside of the cap and when we left the car the fuel gauge was indicting the fuel level as when we collected the car. However, I note my credit card has now been charged some £55 as a penalty for returning the car with a fuel tank that allegedly was not full and which I believe may prove my earlier point that the tank was not full when we collected the unchecked car. You will therefore not be surprised at my disappointment at the whole experience which I believe reflects badly upon yourselves and thus my reasoning for my reluctance to recomend you to a friend. "

" I have booked through Autoeurope before and found them very easy to use. On this occasion however they were unable to provide much assistance with the above issue, somewhat tainting my opinion. "
" This was one of the worst car rental experiences I have had. My flight was delayed, so I called ahead - both to Goldcar and to Autoeurope to warn. Despite upwards of 5 calls, Goldcar we're unable to access. A representative from Autoeurope tried to contact them as well but was unable to do so - although they suggested that as my flight number was on the booking it would be fine, and the rental company would wait for me (I subsequently discovered that his was indeed company policy). However upon arrival I found the Goldcar desk closed and entirely abandoned with not so much as a sign or note giving information of how to proceed or who to contact. Thus I - along with a number of fellow passengers who had also booked Goldcar - was left without any tranport whatsoever and facing a night sleeping on the floor of the airport terminal. In the end I was able to find space at one of the onsite airport hotels at some expense and returned the next morning to collect that car. Whilst the staff at the desk where not impolite, they clearly had little recourse to action in terms of resolving my problems - either by way of a refund, or by covering the cost of the hotel which I had had to incur. Additionally I was charged an additional €150 due to not having the correct form of credit card. Moreover on return there was nobody present at the collection office, and it was a slow process trying to find someone to hand the car over to. Appalling experience. "

" Extremely unpleased on how they treat their customers - had sent email about it earlier on to the AutoEurope team. More importantly, for customers withoiut a French card (the pick up was in Bordeaux) - they are charging extra fees for using a non French card. They also do not do a block but properly debit the account to refund it later on and charge a fee for debiting and then for re-crediting. Fee is about 4%, which means you pay in fees 8% of whatever deposit they take from you. This was not advertised by AutoEurope nor is in the T&Cs of the rental - something AutoEurope should make their customers aware of. In my case, the rental for 3 days was £77. They asked for a deposit of €1,100 with up to c. €90 of fees for charging the card. If refusing to do so, they asked you to take the insurance they offer - €109 for 3 days, more than the car rental itself!! This method is akin to racket or theft frankly - not many options at midnight in an airport without other bookings. "

" Avoid Goldcar. We arrived in Nice airport having booked a Goldcar. With my reservation slip in hand I headed to their desk where 3 Goldcar reps sat behind a ticket machine. I was told to take a ticket and await my turn. I was served 3 hours later. What I noticed was that new bookings were given priority. So I had to wait while people that headed to the desk fresh from their flights were served first. Once served I asked if I could have a reason for the delay - none came my way. A disastrous beginning to my holiday. "

" I rang Auto Europe from Gatwick the moment I knew my flight was delayed, they failed to pass this on to the Goldcar desk at Toulouse. You had vehicles and I had paid in advance and had full ID and a credit card. I do not understand why you think it was remotely acceptable to refuse me my vehicle. The queue at your desk took 1 hour 40 minutes, by the time I reached the front my broker's phone lines were closed so I couldn't get the apparently vital e-mail lifting the 'no show'. "

" When I returned the car, a small scratch was found underneath the sill. I had not checked there prior to taking the car, (who does normally get down and check under the sill?) so could not say whether it was present prior to the rental, but am certain that there was no incident in the car whilst I was driving it. I was charged £235 for this scratch, and regard this as theft from the insurance company, who will hopefully indemnify me against these criminals. The documentation provided was very poor, they would not tell me how much I would be charged, and sadly because I had a flight to catch, I was not thinking straight and did not document the "damage" with a photo etc "

" You misled me about the price. It ended up being nearer £230 rather than £150 because you failed to tell me about the additional £70 fee until I had already made the booking. I will use a reputable company next time and not this shambles. "

" Pick up was a nightmare - we were waiting for an hour as there was just one person the desk and a queue of people. Had to question the car allocation several times as was being offered a three dour when I had ordered a 5 door. Eventually got what I had ordered but I suspect this was just pure luck. Drop off was however excellent and Jason did a great job of getting everyone sorted really quickly. "
