The unfriendly staff member told me that it stated quite clearly in my contract this card was not accepted - I asked him to show me where this was written and it took him 6-7 minutes to find it in the extremely small print. We were then left stranded at 8.00pm after a long flight. The Abbycar employee then suggested I could pay a further €150 for a zero excess contract which I declined. We booked a jeep renegade for fun and was disappointed to get a Toyota CHR, understand that it is always 'or similar' but this company says they don't even have them so feel a bit cheated by that booking process. The car lacks air vents in the back (none at all!) so in the extreme heat it was a fridge at the front and Luke warm in the rear. Also slapped with £75 breakdown cover charge, basically frightened into paying it because Crete is mountainous and we were told we would be stuck if we didn't have it and needed it. Made the overall hire cost significantly higher. "

He phoned Surprice. Surprice sent replacement car. Surprice phoned me. We finished lunch, returned to car park as replacement car arrived. Drove that back to Heraklion. Fuel cost 2 weeks just euro 29. What could have been an utter disaster and a missed flight turned out to be just fantastic service from Surprice - above and beyond. Thank you so much. "

Valid credit card presented at collection (which previously and then later worked afterwards) but was told the credit card didn't work and I HAD to purchase their own insurance (meaning auto Europe cdw insurance was a waste). " What an absolute disappointment--it felt like a complete scam. There was no Volta4U counter at the airport, despite their claim to be located there. Instead, we were taken by a Monza van, about 10 minutes from the terminal. When we arrived at the Monza office, we immediately noticed another couple arguing with the receptionist because their booking couldn't be found, and they weren't given a car. This set the tone for what was to come. When it was our turn, I presented my booking confirmation, only to be told there was no reservation. To make matters worse, the staff explained that Volta4U isn't a car rental company but just a broker. This was both shocking and confusing. As it was already late, we called AutoEurope for help, but they were completely unhelpful. We were told to call back during the day to speak with their office, which was no use in resolving the situation. Rather than wasting more time, I decided to rent a car the next day from Hertz. My advice: avoid private car rental brokers like Volta4U at all costs. Always book with reputable, well-known car rental companies to steer clear of these types of scams. "

" Monza car rental owe me 150 euros! Wasted 2 hours of my holiday and stressed out the whole family. All due to them giving the car I ordered to somebody else because we were late (due to them not being in terminal as advertised!) " On arrival at Heraklion airport we were told we had to board a shuttle bus to the Monza car hire office (5 minute drive). When booking I stipulated a terminal pick up for the car so this was not a great start. On arrival at the Monza car hire office I was told there was a problem with my booking and the car I had booked had been given to another customer! This was due to us arriving at the Monza office 50 minutes after the time that I booked the car from (30 mins of which were due to the unexpected wait and journey to the office!). I was told I would have to pay 180 euros to upgrade to a VW Caddy for our 10 day trip and this was the only option. I was not very happy but it was late and we had two small children with us so had to get them to our hotel quickly. The staff said I could pay 150 euros if it was in cash. I begrudgingly agreed to this as the only other option was to cancel altogether and get a taxi which was not an option as we were now not near the airport! I will be requesting a refund of the 150 euros paid. Dreadful service! "

I will think twice before using Auto Europe again (previous experience was very positive) "

We only managed to get our car because the driver kindly swung back to the airport to see if we were there (as he had just finished with a customer). Had I known about this in advance I would have booked with a dealer who was on-site at the airport. " Unfortunately I wasn't able to collect this vehicle. When I arrived at the check in desk to collect the vehicle Abbycar was unable to process my deposit payment. The staff member kept telling me I had inserted an incorrect PIN, I tried 3 times knowing each time I had inserted the correct PIN. He said I needed to call my bank. This was not the case, I later arrived at the hotel and paid for my room with the same card, in fact I continued to use the same card, and the same PIN, throughout my holiday without any problems. The reason my card wasn't accepted was a problem with AbbyCar which resulted in me not being able to rent the vehicle. I had to pay an excessive price for a taxi to my hotel. Could you please arrange for a full refund to be made for this booking. I have used Auto Europe a number of times without any problems as you will see from my account, I have always found check in at other locations to be quick and efficient and have never had this problem before. I appreciate you help with this. "

" Had to pay extra to protect tyres, mirrors and Glass €105 Two perished and bald tyres. Had a blowout in the mountains but they did get to us quickly 90mins. I was accused of bringing the car back a day late, in fact 2hrs early. They don't have accurate damage shown so got accused of broken case around wing mirror. Missing back shelf in boot. Missing tyre compressor in boot. Originally thought I booked for on site collection but was a mini bus ride, but only 5 mins. I think due to the tyres being so bad the car was very light on the steering and lot of movement on the steering wheel when driving. The car was replaced when the tyre blew. No idea if they have released the credit card block and never received confirmation email that the car is returned. Worst experience ever in all the cars I have hired in my 40 years of driving. "

" It's been a very upsetting experience. Drive is the worst company we came across in 20 years of renting cars in Europe. We arrived at night and they asked us to take a photo of any scratches using the phone tourch! There were 4 scrarches but the 5 th one we didn't notice and they didn't mark it. The scrarch was small and on the black front bumper on a plastic. Obviously we couldn't have seen it in the dark! Fansy enough when we returned the car, they told us that WE DAMAGED the car and made us pay €312 euro+€62 admin fee - that's actually a cost of change of the whole bumper( "

" No real concerns at all. Improved directions to the AbbyCar office would have been useful as it was quite difficult to find. The car, a Kia Seltos, was slightly smaller than the VW T Cross we expected to hire but in good condition. We were told not to drive off-road and the hand-over was efficient and quick. The car proved to be perfectly fine and was easy to drive. We returned the car having had no issues at all. The return was easy. The AbbyCar member of staff checked the car for damage, including the fuel level and then told us that everything was ok, signed the form and said that we'd receive any deposit owed within days. All in all, our experience was positive. We stuck to the legalised roads, drove carefully and enjoyed our driving within Crete. "

" I raised a complaint as Abbeycar charged an excessive amount of €560+VAT + other charges to repair a chip on the windscreen. This seems to be just a convenient way to bag the deposit. There was also an asymmetry between the inspection at check-out and check-in. In particular, we were not prompted to look at windscreen chips at check-out. The The check-out inspection was only done from the outside and we were only prompted to look for scratches larger than 5 cm on the finish and dents/bulges. In contrast, the inspector went into the car at the check-out from where the chip was more easily to detect. My partner and me are not aware that we got a hit by a stone creating the chip and there is the possibility that it was there before. However, admittedly we cannot exclude that it happened during the rental and as it is not documented, need to take responsibility. "

Overall delay of 2 hours to pick up car. Abbey Car was professional and helpful, but unsure why alternative car couldn't have been organised before my arrival. Auto Europe contact was good but would have been better if Auto Europe representative spoke directly to alternative hire car company to save customer having to revisit all details of contract. Company tried to sell increased insurance to value of additional £300.00. Auto Europe helpful when I contacted them at the car hire office, but this shouldn't have been necessary. This could have been a smoother process. The alternative car hire company was excellent and gave me a upgrade on care for no additional cost and all went smoothly from then on. " I opted to go for an SUV due to travelling with my wife and the two children with 4 suitcases and hand luggage. The VW T-CROSS I selected would have been perfect. Instead the two people in Abbycar office were arguing loudly discussing my order and pointing at the screen then making phone calls like they were not happy about something (I don't understand Greek). Then I was given a small Kia XCreed, I said I ordered VW SUV and he said sharply or similar. I was not going to argue as it was very late (10pm at this time) and I needed to get the kids who were very tired to our hotel 1 hour away. I had suitcases on the backseats making it cramped very cramped, its not an SUV so how is that similar? To me this was a downgrade. I understand that I got a very good price for an SUV online but thats what I ordered and I feel they were discussing this cost and decided to give me a smaller car. I also didn't like how he said I was not covered for breakdowns and I had to pay 40EUR to protect me as if the car broke down I could have to pay 300-500EUR for a recovery etc. I paid for an extra cover online and this was not mentioned at the time. He then kept stating about not driving off road and made me sign a form to say I would not drive off road as there would be a penalty charge, this made me feel uneasy all holiday when pulling into a carpark which may not be concreted or tarmaced, wondering if the car is trackered and they would fine me. " When we picked up the car, the form filling was slow and we weren't made clear about taking on the extra 15Euro/day full insurance cover, and had to make a credit card payment of 950 Euro which wasn't blocked by actually charged to the card. When we returned the car, we felt that they looked over the car for every detail to try to charge us for damage. They identified some grass cuttings that were embedded into the lower bumper spoiler and blame us for going off-road rough, which we didn't. The roadside verges are indeed rough in Crete and must have caught some mounds of grass when we parked. There was no damage to the spoiler at all. Then they indicated that one side of the rear bumper was bugling and said we must have hit something, although there were no marks, and we did not hit anything, It's just the bumper on the Aygo is very flexible. Lastly they managed to find two light scratches along the passenger side doors, covering both doors. We are not sure how they were made, and they were so light that a little wax polish would have cleared it up, but they insisted to charge us 185Euro per panel which came to over 360 Euro for this very light scratch. Unbelievable. We could not recommend Drive. "

" VOLTA4U didn't exist. We searched the airport and were eventually directed to a unit called Monza, who had our details for a car. We then had difficulty understanding the poor English spoken by the salesman and why we had to pay and extra 800 or 70 Euros for some form of additional cover. Eventually closing the 70 Euro option we were then told (as we didn't have 70Euros in cash) that it would be 90 Euros if we paid by card which we felt had no option but to pay....rip off!!! The car had a scratch on the passenger and a chip in the windscreen, both were pointed out to the salesman who shrugged his shoulders and said my 90 Euros covered the damage. The car (apparently we were given an upgrade was) clean and fine for us but we had to fuel up at the first garage as the fuel light came on and again the salesman had not explained this detail. Upon returning the car, nothing was checked over and no documents signed off as the vehicle was away before we even left the site. "

" An Absolute SCAM! Never ever again am I using this company! Absolute thieves but to be honest, the money they scammed us out of is not the part that annoys me the most. It's the insulting of our intelligence and the blatant lies that annoy me the most. When we picked up the car an employee named George checked the damage of the car. We checked the car with him and have this on VIDEO. Knowing how dodgy some car rental companies can be we recorded the whole checking process and even mentioned the damages he did not write down. He said that these damages were not important enough for him to note and are damages we will not be charged for. Again all of this process was recorded and you can clearly hear his voice and see his hands on video. It was 9pm. After we got to our hotel we realized we actually didn't need our car because we we were in the central part of Heraklion so we wouldn't be driving a lot. The car stayed at our hotel for the most part. Mind you the parking of our hotel had laminate flooring. We maybe drove the car 4 times during our whole stay. From the airport to the hotel, from the hotel to the port of Heraklion. All round trips. Nothing ever happened on our little car trips our drive back to the airport included. As soon as we arrived at the airport to drop the car off, George started looking for damage under the car. Something he didn't do when we picked up the car but was the first thing he did when we dropped it off. This is the only spot he thoroughly checked for damage by the way when dropping off the car. This is where and why he wanted to charge us the full deposit amount of €275. We argued that this was not honest because he never checked this spot when we picked up the car but now he's checking it thoroughly as if that's the only place a car could be damaged on a trip. To us this looked like he knew something we did not. But I'm not going to speculate. Although we have him on video checking every part of the car except for under the front bumper he stated that he did check this when we picked it up. This was the first lie. And what annoyed us the most about this, is the blatant lie he was telling us that he did check the car and it wasn't him on video. While like I said before, we can clearly hear his voice on video and see his hands and his watch. We even realized when watching the video that he was dressed in the exact same way as when we picked up the car. But supposedly it wasn't him on video. Like at least wear different clothes sir? After further discussion and very heated arguments (because we weren't going to take this lying down and this part of the conversation is recorded too by the way) he mentioned he doesn't usually check for damage under cars. The police came after a while because like I mentioned discussion got heated, the police actually even sided with us because of all the video footage we had. Like I mentioned the car was picked up at 9pm so it was dark when the checks were being done. We dropped the car off at 11am and when in the shadow the damage under the car he mentioned was not even visible. However according to George he would have been able to see the damage when even the Police was not able to do so at 11am. Unfortunately for us the Police does not intervene in such matters. After this the manager was called to settle the matter but it seemed like he was not interested in hearing anything and only wanted us to leave. We have now realized that except for taking these people to court we can't do anything else. NEVER EVER WILL THIS COMPANY BE USED BY US ANYMORE! AND WE WILL SEE THEM IN COURT "

There were scratches all over the car and yet when i returned the car with a scratch they took the deposit even though there was no quote to fix the car. That scratch would not cost 500 euros but they took it anyway. The reason is the RUDENESS of the counter staff at Heraklion Airport (at least on the night I returned the car), where a young girl and an old man teamed up to cheat me out of Euro 80 for "biological cleaning" (clearly the double act had been well rehearsed). Apparently the car had been returned "unbelievably filthy" and required "special cleaning" by an outside contractor (the same scam as reported by other users). When challenged on that, first they said "Oh, if it were just dust and sand, we wouldn't mind" making it sound like we'd left the car covered in vomit and faeces. Again, they refused to say what it was other than dust and sand, and eventually conceded that it was just dust and sand, but "too much" of it. (Nevertheless, apparently it wasn't something a normal wash and vacuum-clean would take care of). Next they said "clearly you took the car to the beach, and you should not have. If you wanted to drive to the beach, you should have rented a 4x4". Really? Does any holiday maker who comes to Crete and rents a car (which is usually a hatchback), NOT go to the beach? They were taking me for a fool, all the time knowingly smirking to each other. I have rented cars in beach holiday destinations for many years - from mainland Spain and the Canaries to Cyprus, mainland Greece, Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica etc, but nowhere did the rental company try to charge me for cleaning because I'd had the temerity to take the car to the beach like everybody else. Stay away from this outfit! P.S. Ironically, while I was in Crete, I had a full valet done of my rather large car (inside and out) by Purple Parking at Gatwick - cost only £25. "

" The companies deal with pre-booked orders , they know the workload , there should be appropriate staff planning to accommodate . The system is hugely inefficient. Having cars not fully fuelled is hugely irritating, as it is almost impossible to get the correct amount in on return . Hence , the company wins either way - charging extortionate rates for fuel top up or receiving "free fuel". Failing to provide a car with a functional spare tyre is unacceptable as is supplying a vehicle with an engine fault. Again the individuals whom I met and spoke to were friendly , professional and as helpful as they could have been. I would like to take my complaint further "

The car appeared in relatively good condition , but the interior showed signs of wear ( loss of the covering near the hand brake ). The car was 3/4 full of fuel . The car had little power on the first journey and the diesel management warning light appeared prompting prolonged telephone dialogue with the company. When I refuelled the car the first time . The warning light went out and the car drove much better ( making me wonder whether a previous user had used the incorrect fuel ). On return to the airport , there was a puncture , the spare tyre was flat and we were stranded at the roadside . Had we not forced the issue and flagged down a taxi , we would have missed our flight . We were reimbursed for the taxi but only 30 of the 35 euros. The people I dealt with were all very pleasant and actually sympathetic and as helpful as they could be . I think they were let down by their infrastructure "

The box to annotate marks on the car was tiny and not large enough to capture everything. The car was in excellent condition as it was fairly new, pretty comfortable and a boot that was big enough for our suitcases. The one negative was that if there'd been a problem with it, then I'd have had to walk back inside the terminal building to the office to get it sorted. We had 2 trouble-free weeks with the car and when I returned it to the same compound at the airport, there was someone to check it over and complete the necessary paperwork. By the time the extra was added to cover the insurance excess it was hard to imagine that anyone would be paying more for a week's car hire. " I was surprised to find that the car had done 67,000km and was a dated model. Of most concern to me was that one of the hub caps dropped off while I was driving around. I followed the rules about only driving on metalled roads and had no bumps or scrapes. I can only assume that the hub cap had not been securely fastened. The Avis counter staff insisted that I should pay the 37 euro administration charge, which of course is levied on top of the large cost of insuring against the excess charge. " On collecting the car I found that I had to register a credit card with £1000 to cover the insurance or a debit card which would then be blocked for 28 days. As I have neither a credit card or a debit card that I was prepared to be blocked I was stuck at the counter. On contacting AutoEurope I was curtly informed that this information was on the terms and conditions and whilst this is so, almost nobody reads terms and conditions so this was still an unpleasant surprise. I resolved the situation by paying an additional £160 directly to Surprice as a non-refundable deposit/bribe so the car hire cost £160 more than initial hire cost and left me with that much less to spend on the holiday proper. This insurance cost was not shown at any point in the original quotation and this lack of clarity is a definite negative to me recommending your company. " The first car they provided me with had a problem with the breaks, I drove back to the centre, 60KM drive, only for them to tell me it was safe, they were rude and unhelpful. 2 days later I had no choice to return the car as the brake sound deteriorated. They replaced the car for a smaller one. All was well until I sadly hit a rock and damaged the car. I informed them and they said all they could do was send a tow truck at 150 euros, I mixed it with rope and drove it back the next day. They charged me 640 euro, when the garage told me it would be 300, they charged £150 euro for paint work when it was unneccessary. "

Firstly I booked the car for 9pm and after I'd paid I was told that the car hire office closed at 9pm and I would have to pay another 25 Euro to collect the car after 9. Apparently I should have noticed the time limit in the "small print " of the terms and conditions. When I arrived and had to accept a completely unsuitable car I complained to AutoEurope. They offered me no assistance whatsoever and said that my contract was with the car hire company....beware when dealing through a broker...they accept no responsibility if problems arise "

At that time in the evening I had no option but to take it. The next day I phoned to complain and was told if I returned the car at the end of the day they might have something better. " Ripped of by 250 Euros by Goldcar Just returned from 3 weeks in Crete. Hired car from Goldcar during hours of darkness with poor lighting- walk round car revealed no damage. No accidents or damage during hire period. When car returned it was daylight and Goldcar rep carefully inspected car and 'found' slight scratches on lower edge of front bumper. These appeared to be old and had previously been covered with a white substance. Company insisted that I must have caused this so called damage and deducted 250 Euros from my credit card rejecting any argument. Fortunately I has cover from Insurance4carhire and am able to claim this back. However to avoid hassle suggest all NEVER USE GOLDCAR "

" We had to wait about 30+ minutes to be picked up from the airport although when booking we were not told that we would be picked up from the airport, it was only when I phoned the day before we were due to have the car that I was told that there would be someone to meet us in arrivals (the thing was we had arrived 2 days before and thought initially that Global had an office at the airport) So after the phone call we went to the airport as instructed and after two phonecalls asking them where they were they arrived and took us to their office, which as it happened was about a 4 minute walk from the Hotel we had been staying in, in Heraklion and if we had been told Globals office address it could have saved us the taxi fare to the airport and the frustration and the phone calls of the waiting for them to turn up. But after all the issues we arrived at the office and from then on we received a first class service, great staff, great car and easy to book in and return the car. "

The car had been pre booked a week before so I feel that the charge should not have been levied and should be refunded. Secondly the vehicle suffered a puncture and when I changed the wheel the spare tyre was barely inflated, this meant involving a recovery vehicle and losing half a day of our holiday!. " No queue - good. Counter staff very friendly and clear but advised and recorded incorrectly that fuel was full. 'Full to full' fuel policy was advertised and was a critical reason for choosing Enterprise as I was unsure of my likely mileage / fuel usage. Had to wait some time for outside staff to come onto the lot, despite there being no other customers - annoying delay as it was late and we had an hour's drive ahead. Staff was then efficient in recording the car's condition and pointing out fuel was only 1 out of 8 bars (ie. empty). This is a major divergence from Enterprise's stated policy and a significant negative in our experience with the company: it suggests dishonest practice, causes unnecessary inconvenience to the weary traveller, and is a failure in good trustworthy customer service. Return procedure quick and painless except for lack of directional signage and overcrowded return bay. "

They also claimed we hadn't paid the extra insurance as you can't see it on the voucher so we had to pay again. This time at 140 Euro's. The experienced really tainted our whole holiday. Our baby wasn't safe throughout and we were ripped off. We would like to know what Autoeurope are going to do to resolve this? "

We received an incredibly old Fiat Punto which we don't believe to be comparable to what you advertised. Specifically, the lights were awful- verging on dangerous given the fact that there are barely any street lamps in Crete. The driver had to be changed as the named driver on the booking form was unable to drive as he had mislaid his driving licence and we were charged additionally to change the driver. The car was dented and scraped in many places. Overall it was not a great start to our trip! "

However, on arrival, we were informed that the Green Motion office at the Port had closed and that we were to make our way to the Airport (4 miles away). This is despite the Port address still being listed on Green Motion website. Also, prior to picking the car up, we advised Green Motion that our ferry had been cancelled and we would be delayed in picking the car up. The staff were very rude and unhelpful, and threatened to cancel the booking if we did not arrive within 24 hours. This was despite explaining that we had no way of getting to Crete until the ferries started running again. Very unsatisfied with the service. "

The vehicle wa supplied 5/8 full of fuel unlike the agreed 8/8 though I was told to bring it back same quantity of fuel. " Very easy to get a quote, compare prices and make a booking. The only issue was the first quote for excess refund insurance (at time of booking) was around the same price as the actual two week hire cost. (£200 to cover £600 excess) Only later did a more reasonable quote get emailed to me. "

Your best price was quoted with "THRIFTY" but your sales people insisted you needed an International driving Licence to book through them EVEN THOUGH the THRIFTY webpage and a Thrifty employee clearly stated that clients from within the EU only needed a license issued by their national government. " I ordered a car under the terms of 'pick up full & return full' but was supplied with only 3/8 of a tank that became 2/8 within about 5 minutes of driving. I was staying at a hotel on the other side of Crete. Now the first I had to do was find a fueling station that was still open at 11:45pm on a Saturday night! The first 3 stations I found using satnav were closed and only after a lot of searching in an unknown city was I lucky enough to find one still open at that time of night. Without satnav and shear luck I would not have had enough fuel to get to my hotel and would have had to wait till the following day to fill up yet all shops are shut on a Sunday! When I order a full tank I expect a full tank! I am not happy with Enterprise! "

On collecting the car we were told that the tank was 3/4 full, We returned the car full and asked for the cost difference as they adjudged fare to reimbursed. They refused. I pointed out that they were in breach of contract (not interested). During this discussion it became apparent that this seemed to be a common practice as others collecting their car were faced with the same fait accompli. they eventually offered to do something when I next used them knowing full well would not happen. " Car collection/return good except lack of lighting in car park made it difficult to inspect car. Car supplied was a Micra which was OK but smaller than expected (is this really a Vauxhall Corsa equivalent ?) . Air conditioning pretty useless and gearbox not very good. "

When we complained about it to the lady on the desk, along with the bracket not fitting, she admitted that their sat navs were rubbish and that they didn't have enough new ones to give to people. But she was very disinterested and there was a queue so we didn't want to spend time trying to get an apology or a refund. It was a total waste of money & left a bad taste. "

I had to go and find it in the car park, when we got to the car, I immediately notices all the accidents that car had been involved in, and had to return the the terminal to get the National car rep to note down all of the dents and scratches on the car. If they had shown me to the car, they could have done this and there wouldn't have been any problems. "

" I was not happy at all with the car provided, although we did not let this spoil our holiday. The car, a Suzuki Swift, had over 52000 miles on the clock and looked the worse for wear. First gear and reverse did not engage easily and the car stalled several times when I was moving off or reversing. I am an ex-driving instructor so I like to think I know what I'm doing. The remote central locking didn't work. Also, the car was under powered and climbing over the Cretan hills was laborious to say the least. Overall, we were extremely disappointed, and could have hired a much better car locally. "
