I couldn't get the fuel gouge up at all, so I had to guess if I was running low. Some brief instructions in the car (perhaps a single sheet) would have been very helpful. "

" I will start by prefacing that you (and Hertz no doubt) will take the line that information sent stated that I may need an international driving licence for this car hire. Suffice to say that when I arrived at the Hertz counter in Innsbruck, the lady told me that I would not be able to hire the car as it was Austrian law that UK drivers need an IDL. Regardless on me explaining that this was not a legal requirement in Austria, and that I had hired a significant number of cars in Austria (including with Hertz - also from Munich with Hertz) and it had not been necessary, the lady was quite rude in her stance. I then telephoned Auto Europe and the call handler (Joel, I believe) was little help. TO make maters worse, I asked if my nineteen year old son would be able to hire a car with his licence. I was told that this would be possible but would cost over one thousand euros as the only car available was a larger one (surely it would have been possible and pragmatic to rent me the car we were supposed to have, and understandably with an additional insurance supplement for a nineteen year old)... The make my case stronger, and both Auto Europe's and Hertz's, I would point out the following: 1. That, after being continually refused a car by Hertz, I then went to Mega-Drive (these counter next to Hertz) who said that it was possible to rent a car with a valid UK driving licence accompanied with a passport. This was exactly as I have been informed from the Austrian police over the last fifteen years when I have enquired (as I also have an IDL but leave it in the UK when it is not needed). Therefore, I hired a car from Mega-Drive, although at a considerably higher cost than when booking in advance. To clarify, with a house in Austria, I have travelled to Austria many times (and Auto Europe's records will confirm this as I have used them for some of my journeys), and know that one does NOT need an IDL to drive in the country; that a valid UK licence and passport are all that is needed. Since returning to the UK I have double checked the facts and all UK and Austrian authorities are clear that the IDL is not legally required. I cannot express how disappointed I am by this experience. I have become a regular customer of Auto Europe over many years and I also recommend Auto Europe to guests using my house. I will wait to hear back from yourselves before considering any further action. "

" I booked my car for pick up at 16.00 at Innsbruck via internet not being told the counter at Hertz is closing at 16.00. On arrival at 16.25 at the desk Hertz was closed. After contacting autoeurope I was told I can collect the car the next morning when the counter is open again. Spending on taxi and time from the holiday I turned up the next morning to be told by the rather rude receptionist from Hertz that my voucher expired and she does not have any cars left to give me as it was holiday season. I had to hire a car from another company at considerably higher cost and so for did not manage to get even a partial refund on my booking which did not materialise. I think this was the first and last time that I booked not directly with a hire company as one is blaming the other and legally it is getting very complicated. "

This caused a great deal of anxiety on arrival at the airport whether one is not affectively stranded without a car. Very unsatisfactory. " Our EasyJet flight EZY8295 on Wednesday 8 March was delayed by around an hour and a half due to the snow in South East England. So instead of landing at Innsbruck at 2.35pm, the flight landed just after 4pm. The Sixt staff closed the counter at Innsbruck airport at 4pm and left around 12 people stood at their empty counter around 4.30pm with no rental car. I phoned the Sixt customer services and they could not help but made a note on their database of the delay due to the snow in the UK. We made our way to Lech by taxi, train, and bus. I phoned Auto Europe and they are putting in a request for a refund or partial refund from Sixt. I could not collect the car from Sixt the next day as it takes an hour and a half to travel back to Innsbruck from Lech, and another hour and a half to drive back, so a three hour round trip to collect a rental car. I think it was very poor of the Sixt counter team to go home at 4pm when an EasyJet flight was known to have been delayed from London. "

Fortunately, I had taken a full series of photos of the vehicle at time of rental, sent them the photo showing the alleged 'new' damage, and -unsurprisingly-the complaint was withdrawn. Probably an innocent mistake, but it's the sort of incident that one associates with dodgy little car hire outfits, and not with a 'reputable' large company. A few small, pre-existing damage issues which weren't listed on contract.... such as stone chip on bonnet, small scratch etc. Which means you have to go back and report them for fear of being charged later. Registered, when booking with you, for travel to Germany at €20 cost but despite pointing this out at collection still got charged the higher, turn-up rate . Then was told there might not be something on duty to check car back in, as was a Saturday, despite this being the reason why we had changed our original booking to them for this to be done, as we are fearful of being charged for damage we haven't done. At the counter I got a 'free' upgrade which I didn't want to an Audit A4 which is actually smaller and they were unable to give me a car in the same class as the one o had ordered. Given my reasonable knowledge of the motor trade I am happy to consider an Opel Insignia, Skoda Superb or a VW Passat as equivalent. We were given an Audi A4 which whilst being a very nice quality car is NOT an equivalent to a Mondeo on terms of size. The same thing happened two years ago in Stuttgart when we were forced to take a Mazda cx3 when we booked a Rav 4or equivalent. The CX3 is 250mm shorter than a Rav 4 so is not an equivalent. "

I know that there will be differences on your website to a providers actual fleet, but a Mercedes B class is not what I call an estate and it is was very marginal fitting everything in causing unecessary stress. Is there a way to update your descriptions or find instances like this out ahead of rental pick up? "

" When collecting the car from Innsbruck we were 45 minutes early and were informed that would cost us Euro 10 for an early pick up! The auto-europe voucher states 'This voucher must be presented at time of pick up or a fee of Euro 10 will apply' This does not indicate early pick up is chargeable. A car was ready, what's the problem - what a rip-off! Then told me that I had two alternatives, take a car (sorry, I can't remember what model) with snow chains - and pay extra - or a 4WD Fiat Panda (both had winter tyres). We had ordered and paid for an Economy Renault Clio or similar with winter tyres. Took the Panda although it proved too small. Snow chains are not mandatory in Austria, winter tyres are. Felt the desk were pressurising customers into thinking that snow was heavy in whatever area they were going to. All roads taken were clear and drive-able and have been on my 5 previous visits. On return, the desk was obviously busy so was just told to leave the key and they would inspect when they had time. So, no check with me present regarding full tank (it was) and damage (non). Also asked about clearing my credit card of the Euro 1000 block and said that would be done within 3 hours. I have had no feedback regarding the above. There was also an effort to sell me extra insurance which I refused. "

" You need to be able to adjust your contracts for unforeseen situations, when you have to keep the car because you have a friend in hospital this should be a stress free alteration. You made this very difficult and stressful and I will not be using you again because of your lack of flexibility. " Our flight was delayed because of bad weather in innsbruck, so we were diverted to Salzburg. i informed europcar as soon as I landed that we would be late picking the car up as we had a bus transfer to innsbruck. i have evidence of this call. this call WAS NOT put through to the innsbruck office who subsequently left the office. When we arrived at the office, there was nobody there and nopone to telephone if the office was unattended - unlike the other rental offices. There was a sign suggesting somebody would be back in 90 minutes! We therefore waited until an extremely rude and abrupt man arrived claiming he didn't know about us. he subsequently charged us for a rental commencing outside office hours -54.45EUR, which we had to pay or we would not have been provided with the car. I understand about this charge, however it was not flagged up on the autoeurope index rates and I would only expect to pay this if the staff were available at the time we arrived - not 90 minutes later and by coincidence. i would like to claim this back and be grateful if you could advise how I go about this. " Sorry to focus on the negatives, but this is where the service could be improved. Firs thing, I was charged around £10 to take the car 10 minutes before the time I had booked it for. Apparently there is a tolerance of around 30 minutes late pick up but not early. It wasn't very easy to locate the vehicle, no parking bay number for example. Vehicle had about 40k milage which isn't an issue. It is normal for a car to have some 'wear and tear' at this milage. I would say exterior wise it was well worn beyond what I would expect, which in itself is not an issue, in fact you probably feel a bit 'safer' than if it was perfect. However the damage on the car was very badly reported. Many things/areas were missed. So much so I got a load of grief from the wife when I was taking timing trying to photograph some of them, and more when I told her I was going back to see them about it. The man on the desk was fine, he said he knew the car was badly scratched and wrote something to that end on the papers. He knew I had pictures and I tld him that unless I really did damage the car I expected no comeback. There really was damage all over it, not major but dents, scratches, even on the roof. It was very clean but it was black and was almost impossible to photograph as it was like looking at a mirror! Anyway, that said car was fine, no hassle returning it even though all the damage was not on the paperwork. Rather than start again logging the damage for each hire period, it would be better to keep an accurate record on file and just update it after each hire return. Did cause a big 'domestic' though! "

" The whole process was very efficient and staff were polite, however my only concern was that following the car return where I flagged small damage and filled in the appropriate documents I was told that I would receive an email with detail of the repair costs. Instead my credit card was charged with over £220 with no justification for that cost, which I felt to be excessive in relation to the damage. That has clouded an otherwise positive experience. "

" Terrible. Picking up and dropping off the car went fine. The car itself was okay too. The trouble came after I returned home to find an additional charge levied on my credit card, which was for the items already covered under the voucher and the ensuing fight to get them removed. Global wouldn't recognise this and I had to use my credit card provider to fight for the money back. Very disappointed. I would maybe consider using again because they were so much cheaper than the other vendors, but they really are a terrible company and you'd have to be ready for a fight. "

My voucher clearly states components that they then charged to my credit card and I'm still fighting to get it back. It seems like they just don't care and are ignoring some very clear facts as written down on the voucher I received. Not the first time I've had issues with them either. "

" There is only notification in the small print that a credit card (not a debit card) is required to collect the hire car. I, like 10 other people on the same flight were unable to collect their hire cars. I was charged £90 admin fee to cancel the hire and it cost me 150 Euros for a taxi. You have been warned ! I was also charged an extra fee of 75 Euros for winter tyres on a subsequent hire. "
