" I do plan to return to the island so will need a car again. I hope it's better organised next time and would be better if it was cheaper "
" I had booked a small Hyundai and rang auto Europe the day before we travelled to check everything was ok and what documents to bring. I was told to bring a passport, licence, household bill and the DVLA code to allow staff to check my details. One arrival there was no car, they didn't know anything about my booking but could see it on the computer because of the voucher number. Eventually we were told we could have a little Kia. The only thing required was my licence. I didn't need all the other documents I was told to bring. The car was very under powered but on a plus side didn't use much fuel. The hire was also I thought very expensive at over £200 for 3 days. At least I didn't have to put much fuel in it "

" Easy on-line booking "
" The initial collection of the vehicle was good and the car provided was excellent. However when we came to return it at the end of our stay the desk was unmanned and according to another customer who was waiting, it had been like that for at least 45 minutes. Someone else was ringing Athol head office but not getting a reply. In the event someone who I think did valeting of the cars, checked my car over for me and took the keys and I did eventually get the return of my deposit "

" Staff tried very hard to sell additional insurance at pick up, when I had already paid for extra cover with Auti Europe. They put £1000 hold on my credit card, not the £900 that Auto Europe stated, which is still pending on my credit card. The car keycfob didn't work so had to use the key to open and lock the car, the brake warning light came on during 4 day rental. "

" Disappointed to be told on pick we could not take the car unless we paid another £45 towards the insurance for just over 2 days hire, we were lead to believe the total price included all insurances, We will not use Athol again unless we get reimbursed for the extra payment we had to pay, as us all being OAPs money is very tight, it was a very bad start to our little break on the IOM, we will also tell other members of our families and friends about our bad experience we received at the checkout desk "

" I think we should be refunded the extra we had to pay fir the additional driver as we were given incorrect information. Atholl said they had informed Auto Europe many times that people were being given incorrect information "
" Charges were not what we had been told. We were told an additional driver was £6.50 per day and there was a £900 block on credit card. When we got to the desk at the airport we were told ot was £10 per day and £1000 block on credit card. The car had a lot of damage. We were told to report anything not already marked on the form but this was very difficult given that it was raining, the car was wet and there were so many bits of damage "

" Firstly the car I requested to hire i was not given, when i challenged this they said the car provided was in the same catagory ( it was a very basic car) i requested a car seat and had to ask for it and carry it to the car, which was extremally heavy The additional driver costs i was given when i booked the car was £6.50 a day however the car rental rep said this was incorrect and it would be 15.00 a day, so had to pay 45:00 which provided me with additional drive and a different cover in which any claims cosst they pick up - felt i was rail roaded to go with it "

" I was not happy being given a car with an existing serious fault. "
" The original car we were given had an indicator light on when we collected it. It was not until we got to our hotel that we found out from the manual that this was a tyre pressure indicator. We didn't use the car the next day but the day after that when we looked at the tyres, one of them had what I imagine was a slow puncture - it was completely flat. We inflated it and drove it back to the airport, because the indicator light was still on. We were given a new car which was fine although the level of damage on it was incredible. However, it worked and we were happy with it. "

" The car was a Kia picanto and small but more than adequate for our hire period. Only down side was it was showing a little wear and tear, with an obvious dent and some scuffs. Other than that we were happy with the drive of the car and it was very economical. "

Also unacceptable that the area of paintwork damage hadn't been marked. Since returning I have had nothing back from them to confirm the car had been returned in the same condition as it was collected. "

" The desk staff were very helpful. Car seat hire appeared to be 'free' while booking. Yet when I arrived it was £20 per day for an additional seat! The vehicle was old and full of bumps. I did not feel safe driving my children around in a car that was in such a bad way. The cost of the car was not value for money and I would not recommend. "

" Hi. On collecting the vehicle at the airport I unfortunately did not have a great experience. I was given a car first which was ideal but upon starting the car it said "system fault". I went back to the desk where I was advised that they were aware of the error message and that it had been checked and all was okay to drive they just hadn't managed to get the diagnostics fixed. I said I didn't feel comfortable driving a car that had an error fault showing on the dash. They said they would move me to another car but all that was available was a Hyundai i10. This was a smaller car than I had booked and paid for. The guy at the desk assured me they were from the same grade but I showed him on auto Europe I had booked an economy car which was a corsa or similar and an i10 on there was classed as a mini car which was cheaper! I went to look at the car and said it was too small for what we needed so o needed them to find something else. I felt I shouldn't be penalised for them not having my size car available that is in full working order. After waiting a bit they said a corsa was indeed available - unsure why this wasn't available when they tried to seemingly palm me off with a smaller car! I wasn't impressed with the service at all. I stuck to my guns to what I had paid for but I shouldn't have been given either of the first two cars. Also, I had to pay £45 for the additional insurance because funnily enough when I used my card to put the £900 hold on it he kept saying my card was declined. But using the same card to pay the £45 was okay? All seemed a bit of a con I must admit! There was no pending or hold messages from my bank at due to suspected fraud. It just didn't sit well with me. My card clearly worked. So just seemed like an easy way to get £45 out of another customer to me. I wasn't impressed. "

" No problem booking via auto Europe although I had a job locating the car hire as 'Athol' was in smaller print on the booking form, so I was wandering up and Dow looking for 'auto Europe' which didn't exist. "
" Only one member of staff at pick-up so had to wait in line for some time. This is unacceptable. Condition of the car was poor with a number of dinks and scratches. Moreover, although the car (Nissan Juke) had rear seats it was impossible for a human to get in, and also very difficult to reach any items on the back seat. The boot has very limited space without folding the back of the rear seats down which was no easy due to reasons given above. It is the most poorly designed car I have ever come across. "

" When I arrived at Ronaldsway airport I was told to take a seat and wait because the car had not yet been valeted! After 20 minutes I re-joined the queue of 20 people waiting for cars. One person left the queue and went to a different desk where she received her car. I left the queue after her and said that I needed a car straight away. It didn't have to be the correct car, any would do. I was given a larger car than I had requested and it was only half-full of petrol. It did the job, but I wasn't pleased with my experience. When I book a car at an airport, I expect it to be ready to drive away. Is that an unreasonable expectation? "

" Quite a long delay to pick up car - only one person on the desk. Car failed twice in 6 days - first time it recovered itself. Second time, same symptoms, completely dead, no lights on dashboard, no response from key. Loose battery terminal, so poor PDI/mtce. The digital display showed wrong time when I picked up car, thought that strange, so the battery terminal had obviously failed before - that should have given you a clue something was wrong with it in the past. Your operative was not at all apologetic or sympathetic when I returned the car. My contract with Auto Europe specified AC, but I do not believe this Picanto had it. Did not really need it much, but could have done had it been warmer. "

" This was our first experience of Auto Europe although we have driven in Europe & our youngest son & family live & work in Paris & often use a hire car facility. We suggest you pick your front line operators with greater care. "

The electronic door locking mechanism on the car did not work so we had to resort, with advice from a team member to using the driver's door lock to open & lock the car. The fuel in the car provided was not full as anticipated & the fuel gauge gave us no indication of how much fuel we needed to return the vehicle with so we returned the car with a full fuel tank. We were driving elderly friends around the island so a vehicle with no rear external door handles was quite unsuitable but we had no prior knowledge. "

" Anthology told us not to rent from you as your insurance needed us to pay £800. We had CDWCover from you that they would not accept. Not a good experience as we lost a day of our holiday as well due to having to return the car early on the last day. I will be booking direct in the future and definitely not with Athol "
" They were rude when we arrived, had given our car to someone else as they claimed we were 6 hours late ( we were actually 15 minutes late). They demanded the car be returned early on the last day as they were very busy! They took £800 from us for insurance and then our car was dreadful. Covered in scratches, dirty and only one washer working. We could not refuse the car as we needed it for our holiday. "

" Regret using ATHOL. Would have been much cheaper to have just got a taxi and forget the trips out (as I wasn't wanting to go out in the car). Trip was materially negatively impacted as a result. Not given notice about the change and left to find out when I got to the car! "

" fairly straight forward although hire seems very expensive on the IOM "
" pick up is very slow and their policy on fuel seems to change every time I use them. I'm never confident in the checking for vehicle damage as they don't come to the vehicle with the customer and say just to make a note of damage and let them know later, and then you just drop the keys off at the end with no in person check of the vehicle. There have never been any issues but I'm not sure how they would manage this if there was a problem. "

" I have used Athol many times over the years without cause for complaint and normally would be marking al the above criteria as 8 or more.. This time we waited in a queue as the one person on the counter tried his best to manually enter details on to a what appeared to be a very slow and cumbersome system. Our flight had been delayed and we were working to a deadline. Despite the slowness in the queue we got to the car in good time which is when I found it was an automatic which I have no experience of driving and had not ordered. As we hadn't time either to ask for a manual car or for me to learn on the job my additional driver took over. Nevertheless I was very disappointed and had I been the only driver would have had to ask for a change. The car was the oldest, most damaged and highest mileage car ever provided to me by Athol. Again I was glad we had the full damage waiver as it would have been very difficult to prove/disprove any additional damage. "

" Horrible auto express customer services, after returning early from trip due to daughter being taken into hospital, wasnt even able to collect the car as i had to get the quickest ferry back from isle of man to uk and after speaking to a customer representative over the phone to explain my emergency situation, refused to offer a refund or reschedule of hire! Disgusting! Please note reflection completely directed to auto express and NOT athol! "

" Ease of booking, I have found customer service to be excellent. Great rates. Need to ensure that when a request is made, such as GPS, that this is honoured by the car hire company. "
" Unfortunately the car I was given this time in the Isle of Man was really poor. It's been a long time since I actually had to use a key to physically unlock a car. Central locking not working meaning I had to open the passenger door from the inside (not ideal in poor weather). I had ordered GPS, but this was an old car that did not have GPS. When I asked about this I was given an old plug in model, but this did not work and was obsolete. I relied on the paper map I had with me, but it would have been difficult if I had been on my own. I did let Athol know on drop off that it was no use whatsoever and should not be given out. "

" The only gripe I have about Auto Europe is that I paid for the petrol to be full to full but on the last two occasions that didn't happen. While I appreciate that I still have to put the same amount of petrol into the car for the duration of my hire. I paid the extra money for no return. Not quite right somehow. Unfortunately the replacement car was smaller than the car we ordered and we were not offered any discount/ compensation. Also.... I wanted to upgrade the insurance to the higher level offered by an email a few days prior to our arrival. The email link did not work and nor was the agent able to enact this higher level of insurance at the desk. Fortunately I did not need this upgrade but it left me feeling vulnerable every time I drove the car. "

" At arranged pick up we were transferred in the cab of a transit van and taken about 2 miles to a lay-by were we were given car keys, no explanation of controls, maps or anything to show us back to destination. The driver was an anti vaccine for COVID 19 and had no gel or mask. We were not informed if car had been deep cleaned or not. Asked if I could leave car back at airport 2 hours later than planned but was asked for nearly £50 more. Spoke to someone in the office Saturday and was told the manager would ring me back Monday, never did. "

The only negative with the vehicle was the lack of a luggage cover meaning our suitcases and camera etc were visible when the car was parked. I also thought the price was quite high but I rarely hire cars so perhaps I'm out of touch with car hire prices. "

It took us over 20 minutes before we got to the counter and there were customers from the same flight waiting behind us. Very slow pick-up service. Also, the car did not have a luggage shelf in the hatchback which is important if you have luggage in the back - which most visitors will have - and require it to be out of sight. "

The only slight hesitation is that this time, there was an error in their records meaning that they thought I was picking up the car a day later than I had booked. Fortunately I had my voucher etc to prove the correct dates. " I unfortunately was not told that the car was diesel and unfortunately put petrol in and now have to pay for the car to be fixed. I have hired many cars in the past but I have always been told if they are diesel. When I got a phone call from the hire company and told what had happened the girl said it was on the fuel cap and key fob. Unless you're told that it's not something you would look for. I had originally hired a Nissan Micra, which is what I drive at home. I was given a Nissan Note and didn't know it was to have diesel put in. "

" Staff were ready immediately on arrival of my plane at the airport to handle all the paperwork promptly and efficiently, with the car less than 100 metres walk away from the hire office which was very obvious in the small airport on the Isle of Man. Drop off was even simpler, just a return of the keys at the counter. "

" The car, a Nissan Leaf diesel had quite a few scrapes and a few dents. These were numbered but We found some that were not. We pointed these out. On returning the car we asked for someone to inspect the car and get the all clear. Staff seemed a bit put out having to do this. However we wanted it inspected wile we were present. WE had taken photos also which proved these unnumbered scratches were there prior to our getting the car. I think staff should expect to check vechicles off. Also after booking this hire company the day before travelling we received an email saying they did not have enough cars. I complained about this as I had little time to search for another car and they then found a car. "

" We couldn't get the sat nav to work on the vehicle. Also there were scratches which we had to point out on collection other than the ones we already had been told about. Also when we booked the vehicle it stated in the terms and conditions that a full tank of fuel was supplied and to return it with the same. Which was the reason we booked with yourselves. However on collection we were told that there was a 1/4 of a tank of fuel and to return it as near to this as possible - with no less than a 1/4 of a tank or you would be charged a ridiculous sum of £30 or something like that. This is quite difficult to do and only means that as a company you gain from this or the next person who hires the car gains!! "

" Despite worrying all weekend about suffering any new damage to the car,I was surprised,pleaseantly,surprised about returning the car,and asking if it was to be checked in my presence for any new damage,was told ,that if I was happy withe the vehicle on its return ,the company was.The words this is the Isle of Man,we don't do that, was a lovely return to the values of trust, I have unfortunately seemed to have lost with customer service in England, very reassuring and I would definitely use your company again. I'm still waiting 7-10 days for the money to re appear in my account. The damage on the car (scratches) were not all marked out on my paperwork but when I went back in to tell the staff they were very relaxed and said there won't be a problem. So I took pics etc just in case and I don't think there were any issues. Altogether very smooth running's. "

" didnt know about the 800 pounds deposit that had to be paid when we picked the car up but we did get it back was a bit nonplussed when we were told to leave the car at the ferry terminal without seeing anyone to hand the keys to anyone could have pinched it just as well i took photos of it befroe we left anyone could have done anything to it and then we would have lost our deposit might be better if there was someone there tgo take the car back and to hand the keys to otherwise a great little car and it helped to make the holkiday "

" Overall I was satisfied with the car that I hired for my holiday on the Isle of Man. The Nissan Micra was a nice little car and did all that I expected of it. The only downside to my experience was the man at the Athol desk at Ronaldsway Airport. He did not come over as very friendly or welcoming. After a short delay at Manchester Airport, we were a little bit disapointed at the reception we received, A different story on the way home when I returned the car keys. The lady there was very helpful and friendly. "

The car was perhaps a grade higher than expected but the poor thing had more than a few "battle scars" in it's life! However, it was economical, comfortable and suited my needs. Maybe give the car a well deserved retirement and a touch of TLC to the bodywork? Overall happy with the service, recommended. "

" To make it clear that although you take out extra insurance in case of an accident you still have to have an available £600 to Athol on collection for them to access and then you can claim back on the said insurance you've paid for! It would have been nice to have been shown controls etc on car having stated we have never driven that make/type of car. "
" Being informed driving on the Isle of Man of all the do's and don't instead of just stating it's like in the UK but take care, only good advice given was reverse parking and parking discs - which wasn't in the car anyway. On return (12.45) assistant was quite abrupt and when asked when I would get my £600 returned snapped "once Valet check it out but they're on lunch now but if all ok then by 14.00" Having to ring up the following day to ask again for my money - this time it was a careless attitude of it may just be in our in tray to sort but can take 3 days - at which point I stated that wasn't acceptable! "
