" Trying to lodge a complaint with Auto Europe is not easy. You have to upload invoice and credit card details in order to lodge a complaint online which I was not prepared to do. Calling their phone number takes you through to a call centre where English is not easily spoken and gives rise to confusion and difficulty in making your complaint understood. "
" Chaotic and Dangerous. Two days into rental, was called to say they had 'sold my rental car' and needed to replace it. Kept me waiting for half a day for the replacement vehicle to arrive only to find it older and with greater mileage on the clock than the original vehicle. Upon inspection, road wheel and spare wheel tyre pressures were dangerously under-inflated. My rental contract was 'full to full'. Made sure I filled up at a petrol station 3km away from the rental returns depot and got charged R427.47 for refuelling!!! All in all, I will never do business with First Car again. "

" I do appreciate that South Africa is not for the soft hearted and have visited upwards of 15 times using Auto Europe for most af my visits. In this instance I do believe you fell short in what I consider was a failure in ensuring a basic level of customer care with regards to my tyre problem. A get you home tyre is a NO NO when touring the outer reaches of SA as it happens I did not have a tyre problem, but it made travel a worry. If on my next booking you cannot give me a piece of mind then I will have to seek other arrangement with my future bookings "

" Every time I hire through First there is a problem! I always allow plenty of time when dropping off and always ask for a final invoice but am never able to obtain it. This time I got an e-mail saying the invoice would follow but stating that they always re-fuel all cars even if returned full. This is the first time I have been advised of that but was not unduly worried. Now I have received an invoice with a charge of R261.98 for fuel plus a further R20 fuel admin fee. Firstly I am most unhappy about the admin charge as if they refuel every return rental then everybody will have to pay this charge but I am furious about the fuel charge as I returned the car full. I only travelled 261kms in total. I filled up with petrol just before reaching the airport and this was the only time I had put fuel in the car throughout the whole rental because I had travelled so few kilometres. I paid R239 so there is no way I should have been charged a further R261.98 by First. I would appreciate your help in recovering this cost. This is totally unacceptable behaviour by a car rental company. "

It did not however have the boot capacity we needed for five people and was lower to the road. I was then offered a Nissan X-Trail which I have driven before and have the same reservations. A RAV4 was then returned and though it was not 100% clean, I took it. I am glad I held out for the car I had booked as it did have the required boot space, was comfortable and economical. My husband did have to add a few observations of dents and scratches at collection, but nothing serious. My dissatisfaction comes from the "fuel fee" added at drop off. Even though we filled TO THE BRIM at the Engen fuel stop at Johannesburg Airport and drove the less than 1km back to the drop point, First none the less add two litres of fuel to our bill plus a fuelling fee. We queried this and was told that it is standard practice for them to add even more fuel (even though they then have to drive it back to their collection point (1km) and use that fuel up!!) and then charge us a fee for doing so. What is the point of a full-to-full condition if they are going to charge us anyway?? Each car they makes an extra profit - only one or two ££s but a bit of a rip-off. Next time we will just return the car empty and let them put themselves out to fill it up again - we will be charged in any event!! The e-Tag in the car didn't work, so we paid cash (and queued) at each toll. "

They told me I needed to pay another another R32.000 deposit before they release another vehicle. I find it to be very strange as that was a continuation of the initial contract. " The booking via Auto Europe and car collection process at the airport was without problem - it was the nature of the vehicle that was provided by Hertz that was disappointing and in my view proved to be not a "similar" vehicle and not one that Hertz list as being within their fleet or options listed on the Hertz web site "
" I hired what was advertised as a Toyota Rav 4 4x2 via Hertz South Africa from your web site. Toyota RAV 4 models in South Africa for a 4x2 list a 2.0 Ltr GX Auto - which is what i was expecting. The Hertz South Africa web site it lists the Renault Kadjar and Nissan Qashqai as being "or similar" so I accept that if a Rav 4 is not available then an alternative car can be provided by the hire company which is clear when booking. What I got was a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated Toyota Rush. Being from the UK I had not heard of a Rush and the Rush (which are made by Diahatsu and is a much cheaper car) but is is very similar in appearance to the Rav 4 and is a 4x2 vehicle. It was only on driving the car that I found it quite under powered. It is really a town car and not suitable for longer distance driving (no cruise control), its pick up on the motorway and faster roads is poor and it does not cope with steep gradients - we actually turned round and headed back on one of our trips as the vehicle could only crawl up one hill and the engine was getting really hot - and this was on a tarred public road where other older vehicles were passing us at speed. The lack of pick up on the motorway It does not really like to cruise much above 110 Km per hour and given the SA roads are often 120 Km per hour and many people drive much faster than this made driving the Rush on these roads far more stressful than it should have been. I have seen other car web sites that differentiate between a RAV 4 and a Rush - which I think is worth considering. You may wish to raise this with Hertz SA as they do not even advertise the Rush. It is likely I will be heading to SA again and looking at car hire and therefore wish to avoid the Toyota RAV4 / Rush issue and Hertz in the future. As you can tell - I was not impressed with my hire car this time around - however, I hope that this feedback is useful. "

Half-way through month's rental informed that car needed to be returned to the supplier! I was in Swaziland, so no, I couldn't 'bring it in to Jo'burg airport'! Car eventually collected from Nelspruit where I was staying by another Hertz branch. How could the Jo'burg office give me a car for a month, which was scheduled to be returned to a supplier in two weeks time. Was it not flagged for this? Gross inefficiency in my view. On my returning the second vehicle things were much mor efficient and I received an apology. "

No bumps, scrapes and full tank, etc. Pleasing that First Car returned R3000 retainer less what? Assume it was for toll fees? You need to review whole process from start to finish. e.g. Why not send copies of driving licence, passport and driving licence through your booking facilities securely when choosing the car so all they have too do their end in validate every thing is correct rather than queuing endlessly because they have to photocopy everything. "

When we got there we had pre ordered a child seat, but they only had one size available, which is ridiculous when they don't know the age of the baby (8 months in this case), so we had to make do with the seat they had as they had no others. Also, the car was quite old, had done 30,000 km. When getting the car, noticed a large dent in the front bumper which had not been put on the sheet so had to go back to office to report it and get pre hire sheet changed. Bit surprised they would hire out a car with a big dent in it! "

" I tuned up at Johanesberg Airport South Africa and was given the key to a Toyota Corolla which I was pleased with size of the boot as i thought it would be small, this is my only positive for this experience. I was shown to the car which was in a very poorly lit parking space and told to check and confirm the marks on the car where all included on the paper work. The paper work and lines put on the paper showing damaged area where un readable and faint so I checked and found several marks and a rear bumper marked as hanging out . I could not find anyone to agree and sign the paper work, but after several visits to desk had someone sort of agree ,casually and sign paperwork. There where so many marks which I had to use my touch on my phone to see I hoped I had marked the extra ones down and left with the car. On returning the car I was shown to a very, very well lit area ,the lady immediately looked UNDERNEATH the rear bumper and said I had reversed into something and distorted the bumper and picked up that there was a small crack in the wheel hub cover. I had to disagree and had a real job convincing them after three people came and looked that the on hiring the reason the bumper was sticking out on the side was it had been hit before from behind causing this before I had rented it. I felt they went straight to the place on the car and where determined to claim this damage on me . After adimantly refusing there allegations they backed down and considering the poor condition of the car i wrongly presumed that they would not be so picky on return . I will not rent from hertz again "

The actual car hire process was okay, but the car was a Jeep Compass which is certainly not one I would recommend due to some glaringly obvious design problems (gear shift, lights and wipers controls, handbrake ergonomics and switch locations - especially the hazard lights button). " We prepaid. Hertz raised a second rental charge now in dispute. Left JNB we stopped on the highway to check tyres and wheels as there was noise. Found nothing. Days later we saw the o/s front steel rim had been badly bent out of shape, risking a blow-out. The wheel cover was unmarked, covering the fault. The damage could have been fatal. Both front tyres were worn to the legal limit; the rears were low and in the 2nd of a 5 week hire! The passenger air vent was broken preventing it from being adjusted away from the face making refrig use uncomfortable. We changed the car at CPT. The change-over crews acknowledged the issues but weren't particularly concerned with the wheel or other problems. Surprising for Hertz. Is this a franchise? "
