Where to pick up my car hire at Johannesburg Airport

Opting for a car hire at Johannesburg Airport couldn’t be easier, with rental desks located opposite the flight’s terminal, simply head towards the ORTIA’s multi-storey car park and follow the signage once you are there. P2 south level one is for collection and drop-off of car rentals. As one of the country’s major airports, expect to find all the most trusted and well-known car rental brands present. From Avis to Budget and Hertz, finding a great deal here, shouldn’t be a problem. To view all available suppliers, enter your desired dates into our online booking engine, and all available car rental suppliers for those dates will be displayed. You can then further filter the results by car type, number of doors, engine type and more.

Before arriving at the rental desk, make sure you have on-hand all the requested documents. These are a valid identification, your car rental voucher, a valid driving licence (including an International Driving Permit, if required), and one of more credit cards under the main driver’s name. Suppliers may request more than one credit card, especially when hiring a luxury car. Credit cards must have enough funds for the supplier to hold a deposit on. Deposits will be released back onto your card once the car is returned in the same condition as when it left. We advise inspection the vehicle during pick-up and noting anything of concern on the pick-up slip. Take photographic and video evidence if possible.

Johannesburg International Airport is a major airport providing international and domestic flights to and from, as well as within, South Africa. The airport is divided into Terminal A, which receives international flights, and Terminal B, which handles domestic air traffic. Both terminals span across two floors – the upper and lower level, where the former is home to the departures area, and arrivals are found on the latter level. Many airlines are now using Terminal B as the main check-in area for both domestic and international flights. Baggage claim can be found in your flight's arrivals area.

    Airport Facilities

You won’t run out of shopping opportunities at Johannesburg Airport, as the airport claims to have over 100 different shops. These stores, as well as restaurants and cafes, are dotted around the public concourse and the waiting halls of both terminals. For those requiring internet access, there are two access points in the domestic terminal, and one in the international terminal. The international departures area also boasts a wireless connection that those with designated wireless cards can use. The service is available throughout the international departures area, including most restaurants. Currency exchange desks are available in both terminals, as well as all the standard facilities for safe and secure onward journey.

How to get to and from Johannesburg Airport

The airport is well connected with the local transport and road network. When you rent a car at Johannesburg Airport, it is generally easier to get into Johannesburg city with minimum fuss. The airport can be reached via the R24 Airport Freeway, which is connected to the R24 and R21 motorways. Driving to central Johannesburg is simple, as the airport is only around 15 miles away: the drive should only take slightly more than 20 minutes when you follow the R24 motorway.

Pretoria is also not very far away: driving along the R21 motorway should get you to the city, which is 32 miles away, within 40 minutes. If you are willing to venture much farther from Johannesburg all the way to the seaside vistas of Durban, follow the N3 for about 360 miles and you should reach your destination in approximately five and a half hours. The South Africa driving information page has more on driving distances and regulations.

If you need to reach Johannesburg city from the airport without a car rental, there are public transportation options available to you. You can make use of the Gautrain rail service, which departs from the transit terminal, found between the international and domestic terminals. The Gautrain connects the airport with Sandton and Pretoria. There are also bus services run by Metrobus and Putco, with five different lines operating services twice a day. Alternatively, there are many private bus companies, and metered taxis, to take you to the city comfortably.

    Parking Tips

You may have trouble finding on-street parking in the city of Johannesburg, and even if you do find a parking space, it may be difficult to find out what the limitations regarding duration and permits are. It is thus easier to use secure parking garages. Many are located near tourist attractions and points-of-interest. Many official parking garages have 24-hour security and CCTV surveillance. We recommend parking your car rental from Johannesburg Airport in one of these garages.

At the airport itself there are seven car parks, numbered P1 to P7. P1is a short-stay car park, P4 is a long-stay car park. P7 is the open stay car park and for pick-ups/drop-offs. These are all located at Terminal A. Terminal B car parks are P2 south, short-stay parking with some levels dedicated to premium and valet parking. P3 north is also a short-stay car park with some levels dedicated to pre-booked parking. P2 south level one is for collection and drop-off of car rentals. Outside the terminals there are also pick-up and drop-off zones.
