    O. R. Tambo International Airport is the main airport servicing international and domestic flights to and from, as well as within, South Africa. The airport is generally divided into Terminal A, which receives international flights, and Terminal B, handling domestic air traffic. Each of these terminals is divided into an upper and lower level, where the former is home to the departures area, and arrivals are found on the latter level. Many airlines are now using Terminal B as the main check-in area for both domestic and international flights. Baggage claim can be found in your flight's arrivals area.

    Airport Facilities

You should not run out of shopping opportunities at Johannesburg Airport, as the airport claims to have over 100 different shops. These stores, as well as restaurants and cafes, are dotted around the public concourse and the waiting halls of both terminals. For those requiring internet access, there are two access points in the domestic terminal, and one in the international terminal. The international departures area also boasts a wireless connection that those with designated wireless cards can use. The service is available throughout the international departures area, including most restaurants. Currency exchange desks are available in both terminals.

Transportation / How to get to the airport

The airport can be reached via the R24 Airport Freeway, which is connected to the R24 and R21 motorways. Driving your car hire from Johannesburg Airport to central Johannesburg is simple, as the airport is only about 15 miles away: the drive should only take slightly more than 20 minutes when you follow the R24 motorway. Pretoria is also not too far away: driving along the R21 motorway should get you to the city, which is 32 miles away, in about 40 minutes. If you are willing to venture much farther from Johannesburg all the way to the seaside vistas of Durban, follow the N3 for about 360 miles and you should reach your destination in approximately five and a half hours. The South Africa driving information page has more on driving distances and regulations.

If you need to reach Johannesburg city from the airport without a car rental, there are public transportation options available to you. You can make use of the Gautrain rail service, which departs from the transit terminal, found between the international and domestic terminals. The Gautrain connects the airport with Sandton and Pretoria. There are also bus services run by Metrobus and Putco, with five different lines operating services twice a day. Alternatively, there are many private bus companies, and metered taxis, to transport you to the city comfortably.

    Parking Tips

You may have trouble finding on-street parking in the city of Johannesburg, and even if you do find a parking space, it may be difficult to find out what the limitations regarding duration and permits are. It is thus easier to use secure parking lots. Please remember not to leave any valuables visible in your car when it is parked.
