" I experienced a delay with my flight. I phoned your help number and was advised to contact the Sixt Rental office. I contacted them and they advised me that I should speak to your helpline number because my contract was in the first instance with you. So I did and then your agent said he would send Sixt an advisory email / message and he duly did so. It just appeared at this stage from my point of view that there was a disconnect between the left and right hands in the rental administration. "

" I'm not knocking Budget themselves, I'm sure other sites operate a better service. However the Manhattan, NY branch does let the brand down. The front desk operators need a little customer care etiquette, although the car was hoovered inside the glove box and other interior compartments were filthy with Biscuit crumbs and other rubbish inside. The car wasn't washed with chalk marks all over the car indicating previous damage and writing on the outer glass also showing damage. The budget employee handing over the vehicle wasn't customer friendly and didn't invite me over to inspect the vehicle, she just took the paperwork from me, signed it and told me the vehicle was ready to drive away. I did inspect the vehicle to make sure the damage report matched the damage on the car though. Other than that the vehicle was ideal for my family use. "

" It was not until we'd checked at the desk to pick up car that we were told there was approximately 1 hour wait as cars were being cleaned, this turned out to be a 2 hour wait as there were no cars available, obviously we were lied to. I was surprised there was no form of included basic breakdown cover, nor even a guarantee of there being a spare wheel ('some cars do, some don't' - ours did, as it turned out). I declined to locally pay extra for breakdown cover - the car was quite new and a reliable Korean brand, plus I had already purchased breakdown coverage through Auto Europe. However, there seemed to be no advantage purchasing Auto Europe's coverage in advance, versus locally paying per rental day over the counter. I was also surprised by the $15 per day admin fee for handling road tolls - I've never seen this before with other US rentals. The all-in optional daily toll charge of $23.99 was not attractive as we spent most of our driving days in rural areas or with the car parked up, when staying with relatives. The car had a damaged bumper and undercarriage and one i left the airport i realised a dashboard display saying please take the car to the dealer for a service and the car heavy with the smell of smoke, which with my lung condition meant it wasn't a pleasant experience "

I knew I would have to pay for a car seat, but there was then a $50 inter-city fee despite having booked to pick up at New York and drop off in Baltimore, with the initial price being much higher accordingly. There was also a $33 'concession fee recovery' which I have no idea what it is, plus tax totaling $55 despite my booking saying all local sales taxes were included in my initial price. However, I was most disappointed by the fact that the options for paying tolls are extremely punitive. Either you pay them individually with a $15 fee each time or you pay a high daily charge. The equipment is already in the car so I do not understand why the customer cannot simply pay for any toll charges he/she incurs. I chose the daily rate - a total of $112 - but I felt rail-roaded into it by the woman at the desk who refused to explain it properly and simply fobbed me off with a list of roads which had cashless tolls. Clearly someone who has never driven in the city and surrounding area before is not going to have any idea as to which is the best option for them. The only reason I have not submitted a formal complaint as yet is that another issue we had - when the car we took had to be changed, meaning we had to shift all our luggage and the car seat into a new car, making us late - resulted in $100 coming off our charge, meaning it wasn't quite as ridiculous as it first appeared. I should not be surprised given prior experience with hire cars, but I still fail to see why you end up paying more when you pick up the car than when you book it in the first place, it provides a very skewed picture of what the likely total cost of the service is going to be. "

I declined several times, but he kept outlining the difficulties I could have. (Note- we incurred $12 of tolls during our complete rental). This is an absolute scam and should be reported to the authorities, as my wife was very nervous during our first two days travel in the car that we would incurr the fines that the Advantage employee has threatened us with. When we returned the car, there was no one available to check that we had no damage. They point blank refused. again, extremely unprofessional behaviour. I WILL NEVER KNOWINGLY RENT FROM ADVANTAGE AGAIN. "

I had assumed that I could just pay cash, but this proved not to be the case, even in situations where there was a cash point, as the system automatically associated the car with Europecar's EZPass account based on the license plate number. " We would recommend that in winter and late autumn months cars come equipped with a shovel, a scrapper and chains or tire socks, as we had to dig by hand and clean the car by hand to get ourselves back when we got caught in a freak snow storm. A 6hr drive became a 17hr drive and we couldn't get the car back till the next day. "

" This company was cheaper than a lot I found for one week, so it was maybe to be expected that their staff were not the best. The car was powerful but I was a little surprised 2 warning lights came on after only 2 days of use. "
" Counter staff rushed details about the car hire and confused me regarding the toll charges pass plate. She was unhelpful. On day 2 of 7, two warning lights appeared on the dash - turns out they were not serious luckily but still alarming. A service light and car tyre pressure (which would not turn off even after inflating the tyres!) "

" There was an extra charge at the end of my rental for something that was included in the voucher. Budget denied it was their charge. It was entirely a charge made by Budget, but Autoeurope dealt with it quickly and efficiently and got me a refund. "

" It was easy to book a car through the AutoEurope website and it was very good value for money. The car was fine for what we wanted it for. The only disappointment was the administrator employed at the Budget office. "
" The online booking, collection and drop off of the car were easy. The Budget office was easy to fnd. However, the attitude and speech of the administrator at the Budget office was disgusting. She was very rude to both me and a Brazilian gentleman who was collecting his car before us. She spoke lazily and when the Brazilian man asked her to repeat what she said she told him to 'forget it' and muttered something under her breath as she walked away. We arrived half an hour early to collect our car and she told us to go away and come back later. We asked if we could sit and wait in reception and she said 'not really ... but you're going to anyway aren't you.' She then proceeded to sit and eat her dinner and chat on her mobile phone. Whilst completing the paperwork for our car she was picking her teeth with a plastic toothpick! Her customer service skills were appalling. "

" Forcing me to meet ez-pass device was not cool since I would need that only for 2 days of my overall 7 day rental. Rental car was smelling very very bad (like dry stuffs frogetten in it for 2 weeks) and the staff did open all the windows on purpose before picking up the car, all 4 windows were open for a while when we got the car. So we couldn't get the smell and understand. We figured out at the second day and it was too late and far to go and change the car. "

" They did not explain what we were being charged for, told us where to find our car to find out there wasn't one there had to stand for 30 minutes in the rain waiting for them to find one. Which I think was smaller as the fuel price we had been charged reduced, but they did not reduce the price of what we had been charged for the original car. Tried to sell us toll passes at a $120 dollars a week even though we knew we would only really hit tolls in New York we didn't take it. The car we received was new, not totally clean but fine, did not have any information in it though what kind of fuel we should use!! I had to spend 10 minutes searching the instruction booklet. "

" What they did was mainly fine. That said, the voucher said 'Sat Nav included' and then further down the document contradicted itself. Naturally Thrifty went by the second statement. The Auto Europe booking was very cheap but the very high charge for an EZ pass that others give for free narrowed the gap. "
" Poorly cleaned car with litter in it. Rediculously expensive EZ pass, when the tolls are just a few dollars. This added $400 dollars to a 3 week rental. It's something I've been given for free by other companies in the past. Counter staff tried to sell me an enormously expensive Sat Nav hire, turns out the car had a built in one. Handover comprised a woman pointing at the car as she walked away from us. Return fine, the guy seemed to care. The car was a little older and higher mileage than you might get elsewhere but hey, does it matter. Documents left in the glove box showed it had previously been rented by the premium brand. At the end Thrifty added £100 plus for concession fee and tax which the voucher said are included. When I contacted customer service I eventually got a meaningless fob off reply. Further contact had just been ignored. Awful rudeness. "

As we had prepaid to you what we thought was the whole amount we could not walk away. To then find out that we have basically been lied to and charged over $200 extra is extremely disappointing. Also, we booked a Kia Sorento (or similar), but were given a GMC Acadia - for 2 people a 7 seater was excessive and used a lot more fuel, so cost more than we had budget for our road trip. Can you help/advise with this matter? "

" Most things were great about the rental. The car we were given (Kia Sendona) was in exceollent condition and was very comfortable. It was easy to pick up and drop off the car. The location of the office, right next to Jamaica station is very convenient from/too airport. The staff were friendly and performed their duties quickly. However, they tried to confuse/scare us into taking on use of the EZ Pass toll paying system. We were shocked at the near $270 cost for use of the device for our 10 day rental and although we were unsure about how many tolls we would use decided against paying for it's use. This proved to be a very good choice. By avoiding tolls where possible we only ended up passing through one toll road on our whole trip through new york. Thus paying the (crazy expensive) processing fee of $15 only once. Much cheaper. Even had we not avoided tolls it would have been hard to get value from the EZ pass unless. Staff should not try to trick and scare customers into an undeed extra like this and dollar plus should offer a much more reasonable fee for it's use. E.g. only paying for the use of the pass on the days the car uses tolls. "

" Auto Europe provided clear information regularly in advance of the rental. It was a good value rental and I was happy with that part of the experience. Unfortunately the customer service from Thrifty was lacking. "

They were more interested in upselling me additional cost add-ons than explaining the terms and conditions that I asked about and were clearly uninterested in explaining anything to me when I was trying to weigh up my options. At drop-off I was sent in several different directions to find somebody and each time was treated like a simpleton for doing what I was told by another representative. The guy who checked the car in said that it was 'very dirty' due to a bit of gravel etc from people getting in and out of the car and said there may be a cleaning charge. I had shaken the mats out and what was in the car was no more than what had accumulated from a week of people getting in and out of the car. "

The Toll pass did not work at one place, and two separate toll booth staff stated the Toll pass on the car was not working, so I paid with cash. "

" Advantage at JFK (who provide the cars and service for Europcar there), will try to push buying the EZ pass toll option (most rental companies do this I believe). You can pay for the NYC bridge tolls etc on line by registering your license plate (registration number) with your credit card details for the duration of your rental as a generally much cheaper option depending on where you'll be driving. Advantage staff are helpful and prompt, providing a good service. "

" We were at the hire desk for over an hour. we were told the car we ordered was not available and would we take a van. if not, would we pay for an upgrade. In the end we got what we ordered. we were talked into getting an easy pass at $23 a day and did not use anything like that value, nor were we told that we had to open the transponder which was hidden behind the rear view mirror and i did not see it for a day or two. we returned the car last Wednesday and today, Sunday, have not received our invoice.If i were Europcar I would terminate my agency agreement with them (Advantage) because the standard of service is so poor "

" as mentioned above I think the charge for the EZtag for tolls was excessive, and certainly more than we used. I would be happier if there was a small charge added plus the toll cost and only calculated on Tolls we went through. "
" just a couple of things: on pick up the car had a low air pressure light showing on the tires. this was almost immediately on leaving the airport. Due to traffic and flow I was unable to immediately return so drove 40 miles to our hotel. Rang the help line, hoping that someone would be dispatched, however I was told to get it repaired myself, but if they change the tyre, I would need to keep the damaged tyre and bring it back to the rental agency. Luckily it was repaired by a friendly garage and I was refunded most of the cost. Also EZtag for the tolls. This was an additional $30+ a day for the EZtag. So added a further $360 on my overall charge. I estimated that we only went through $100 dollars worth of Tolls, if that. It would be better to only pay for what is used. "

" where as the car was excellent the GPS system was so out dated we spent a lot of our time going in the wrong direction. On coming from the airport (JFK) to Ridgefield NJ it brought us through the centre of the city (NY). Then it took us 75 miles to Woodbury Common which in fact was 41 miles away. And sometimes it would speak and then again it wouldn't. A nightmare experience for a visitor. "

" It's not Europcar in JFK they sub contract to Advantage and they were awful. Bridge tolls alone will cost me almost as much as the 8 day rental and the car was used from and to JFK with one other journey. No mention of rip-off toll charges at the time of renting so I've been tricked into a contract that has cost me twice what it indicated originally. Auto Europe must know how Europcar conducts its business so Auto Europe is culpable too. "

" I arrived to pick up my car and had to queue for two hours. The car I had reserved with Sat. Nav. Was not available. They provided me with a phone which had Sat. Nav on it. Upon my return they tried to charge me a further $130 for the Sat. Nav. I refused to pay and eventually it was waived off. "

On returning the car at JFK the site seemed cramped and confusing, although it is very handy for the Air-Train. The person checking in the car could not provide a receipt as his machine was "not printing". We took photos of the car and the dashboard (mileage / fuel gauge) just in case. "

" Ford explorer 7 seater (4x4), with room for 2 large and 3 small suitcases, should not be described as such. It is not comfortable for 7 adults travelling 2500 miles in 10 days and the boot space was not fit for purpose. It would be okay for 6 adults max. - the centre seat in middle row of seats is child size and not comfortable at that. The rear 3 seats are uncomfortable and I am still recovering from a bad back caused by those seats! "
" Same as above with regard to seat now and luggage space advertised for For explorer. Had we gone for the Doge Caravan, also described as having exact same spec - 7 seats and 2 large plsu 3 small cases, we would have been much better off - but we went for 4x4 in case of snow conditions, which there were!! Also, budget tried to give us another vehicle that was not the type we had ordered - felt like they were palming it off on us - though happily switched when we came back to their office and siad the one they had issued us was smaller in boot space that the Ford explorer. But very good customer care!! "

" On the plus side they upgraded our car and when we had a slow puncture later on in the rental, the central call center were very helpful locating a tyre center and arranging payment. On the downside, I didn't like that they tried to scare us into paying something like $15 per day for the 'ez pass' box by telling us that we might not be able to pay road tolls without one, leading to expensive fines.
