" It was not made clear enough that this was an off airport operation. We had difficulty finding the pick up point and then an unecessarily aggressive driver told us he would only take the main driver. This left my wife, my son on crutches, his pregnant wife and a 22 month old child at the airport. On arrival at the site I was directed the wrong place. The desk staff were good although it was difficult to get a safe child seat. The car I was expecting was a Skoda Kamiq or similar. I was given a Ford Tornio. This is like a van with windows! But at least there was plenty of room. On the way back it was suggested the bumper had been damaged during my hire. Luckily I had photographs proving it was pre-existing damage. I do hope I will be returned my 900 Euro deposit soon!! "

" They clearly try to make money of the very unobvious marks/dents, you need to be extremely thorough at taking pictures on pickup. The lady skipped around the car not paying much attention to the 21 listed marks dents. Then when to the smallest mark on a rear wheel like she knew it was already there looked like a dirty mark and very small. Luckily I had pictures of this on pickup so she then said you will get your deposit back. I will definitely not use them again. "

" I was disappointed with the service, we had to wait 40 minutes to pick up the keys and then there was no one to check the car over with us and I had to sign a document stating the car was in A1 condition before I had seen it. Whilst I dropped the car off late, I left it in the Goldcar area, but as there were no parking spaces I had to park it in front of other cars (like many other cars around me) and drop the keys in the holder. I then had emails saying they had tried to ring (they had not) and had people running around the airport trying to find it, when it was in the right place. The car was also damaged and I have literally now idea if we picked it up with the damage, so all in all a very disappointing experience "

" Day after drop-off, I receive a INVOICE no.0000202510273696, ref a damages . I am requesting a reassessment and cancellation of the above invoice for an amount of 255.36 euros, because at the time of picking up the vehicle at Palermo airport, the car already had the mentioned damages, and I asked the employee to change it because it was broken. The employee then informed me that there was no other replacement available and that I just needed to take pictures of the damages for a subsequent liability waiver. I have and attached photos were taken in the Drivalia parking lot at the time of pickup. I therefore ask that this charge be reviewed and canceled. There is no way to send it to Drivalia - his form at site don't works. An more, insurance policy for potential collisions has also been taken out. I hope you all resolve this. Tanks, "

Car was in ok condition , could of done with a vacuum but not to be fussed with, the look over the car was very fast and before I signed the document I had to point out additional dents and scratches they had not marked. On drop off, I took car to depot only to find in was closed and locked. I later found out they had moved premises during my hire and no one had advised me. On check out inspection they were like Nazi controllers suddenly pulling out plumb weights and rules closing one eye and analysing chassis shape, it was OTT. I watched with with 3 cars before me all of which they found problems with. To my surprise they looked over mine only to find what were presumably 3 stone chips very similar to other marks on the bumper already evidenced on the sheet. To be fair I don't think they were there originally since I looked at a photo but they were insignificant to other markers on the bumper. I was pleasantly surprised when they said they were so small I wouldn't get charged and so signed what I needed to and left. 2 days later I got an invoice for 275 eur. Pretty poor form and unreasonable fee for something that wasn't a dent or scratch per say simply paint chips. "

" Shuttle driver drove at very unsafe speeds, very scary both ways, they only have one shuttle bus and cannot cope. When you call on arrival all they kept saying was they did not speak English. Not signs or anything at airport to help you. On pick up the desk staff were desperate to sell me additional insurance even though I had already bought some before leaving home. He was very aggressive and was shouting at me that I did not understand and was stupid if I thought I did not need it (all in perfect English despite answering the phone and saying to person on the end they did not understand English). On handing over the car to me they asked me to sign but I refused as I had not looked around it, they said they were busy and if I wanted to check it with them I would have to wait 30 minutes. I decided to take a video and photos of the car and signed the paperwork. Car had warning light on dashboard saying oil service overdue. On return they scrutinised the car and went into office, then came back 10 minutes later saying there was additional damage. I immediately disputed it and showed them the video and photos I had taken. They then made me wait another 10 minutes before agreeing it was already damaged on pick up. This company is truely untrustworthy and dishonest and seeking to obtain money from innocent travellers. I think Auto Europe should be ashamed to be using a company like this to represent them. It looks like I was one of the few lucky ones who did not have pay extra or costs. "

" Previous experience has been good. On this occasion the huge fuss which EcoVia made about some superficial scratches has made me much less positive about Auto Europe. Also you need to check that when your site says the hire company is at the airport, they really are, not like EcoVia who are off-site. "
" When I made the booking the Auto Europe site stated that EcoVia are at the airport. This is not true, they're offsite and you have to wait for a shuttle bus to and from their venue. Sadly I managed to make a few fairly superficial scratches in the car the EcoVia made a big fuss about this, returning the car took around 45 minutes, which was painful. They also charged EUR 738 for what I consider to be a few pretty superficial scratches. When you need to get a flight home you're not in a position to negotiate and EcoVia took full advantage of this. There were also questions about the other (pre-existing) damage to the vehicle and it was a struggle to get the staff to recognise previous damage which was even listed on the contract. The staff member asked me for my photos of the vehicle, but I had not taken any. EcoVia did not have any photos either, so it turned into a long discussion. This compares very unfavourably with the last time I rented in Sicily with a different company. They were very understanding and reasonable. We will not be using EcoVia again. "

" I was not aware that AutoEurope was a third party rental company. As such we ended up renting from EasyCar, which was not at the airport as we thought when searching for a rental company. Looking at the reviews of EasyCarHire online, I would never have chosen to rent from them, as we had the experience with them. It is appalling that customers are unwittingly sent to them through AutoEurope. I am further appalled that the additional insurance I purchased was invalid, and would request a refund for the insurance I paid for that was useless. please advise how I can proceed with this. "
" I had a very poor experience with Easycar Hire. On collecting the car, we were pressured to buy additional insurance, saying that the additional insurance I purchased with AutoEurope was not valid as they are a third party. This was 140 Euro for 5 days, double the cost of the car rental costs. On returning the car, we were accused of losing the "hat rack" aka parcel shelf - this had been incorrectly marked as present by your staff, however it was not present and we did not have it when we collected the car. We did not comment about this at the time, also because in English we do not call it a "hat rack", but a "parcel shelf" or "boot/trunk shelf". Frustratingly we did not have photographic evidence of this either. On returning the car, the male staff checking the vehicle was very rude in their discussion with me about the absence of the hat rack, accusing us of losing it, and saying that we would have to pay for a replacement, and that it would not be covered by the extra insurance that we took out. We then had to wait 20mins whilst they checked their computer system to then see that they had never provided the hat rack, that it had been lost in a previous rental, and this was an administrative error. The male staff did not apologise for this error - neither for accusing us of losing it, nor for being rude, or making us wait. He instead laboriously pointed out the small damage on the wheel trim - a 2cm scratch next to many other older scratches. It felt very much like he was intent on finding any possible error to charge us additional costs. I do not recall this damage happening but will not deny that it is there. I have since been charged an additional 80 Euro. However the attitude of the staff was unacceptably rude, again saying that there will be a further cost for this damage not covered by the insurance, resulting in a poor end to our car hire experience and holiday. We did not see any other renters experiencing a similar attitude from the staff, and another renter who had seen the exchange when they were returning their vehicle commented that they also noticed that the staff member was unnecessarily rude to us - we were two women, it felt like sexism. "

I have rented many cars on this basis but I was told that the car could not be rented to me because I don't have a "new" style license. Only after some lengthy and difficult exchanges was I allowed to take the car if I signed a waver to say I'd be responsible for all financial consequences of being stopped by the police and the car being impounded for up to 3 months!!! I can find no reference in the t&c's for AE or Dollar to say my style of license isn't acceptable. "

" During my issues with the puncture Auto Europe were the only people to answer the telephone, although not able to arrange a replacement car. Recovery of the original vehicle was also relatively quick. "
" My car sustained a puncture on Friday 20/9/24 and after trying to re-inflate using the supplied sealant kit (which are always useless) without success, the car was recovered. I then tried various telephone numbers to obtain a replacement car, no-one would answer except auto europe, but they could not influence the situation. At 23:00 hrs I did receive a phone call (I was in bed) informing me I should go to the mid-town Palermo office to arrange a replacement. On arrival there the following morning I was told they had no cars available and I should return Monday 23/9/24 and a car would be available. On arriving back at the office Monday, I was greeted by the most arrogant, rude worker I have the misfortune to encounter. Her only answer to my request for a replacement car was that they didn't have any!! After more debate, she suggested I make my way to Palermo airport to try there. Another train journey later I was met by the only shining star in this whole sorry affair, a young lady (unfortunately I didn't take her name) who managed to sort out a replacement vehicle in a matter of minutes with no fuss, a true example of excellent customer service. So to sum up, nearly 4 days without a car because of a simple puncture. Train travel expenses and lost holiday time, travelling from San Nicola to Palermo. All of which could have been prevented if sales representatives had given me the correct information and probably more importantly PUT A SPARE WHEEL IN THE CAR!!! "

Luck for us some local taxi drivers were able to direct us to the process. Their provided phone was permanently busy, and autoeurope staff were unable to provide any assistance. Also according to the renter the insurance provided by autoeurope was "after the fact" meaning i had to pay everything in case of a problem from my own pocket only to later, potentially, get it back from autoeurope. This wasn't clear to me from the begining. "

Felirent is located outside the perimeter of Palermo airport, a 13 minutes drive on a highway (I timed it and didn't appreciate the driving style of the shuttle bus driver either). This cannot be deemed an airport location under any circumstance's. There was no possibility to drop off the car outside of office hours - no use should one have an early morning flight. Counter staff informed me that I got an "upgrade" on arrival. Some upgrade - a car that had been put through its paces (53k km on the odometer), dirty and with clutch that was about to give way. Staff were polite.... "

" Rental Plus were disgraceful. When we arrived in Palermo they told us our contract was void because we were more than one hour late. One contract had been terminated and our vehicle given to someone else. We were advised to speak with the broker to negotiate a refund. This caused us significant distress as we tried to understand what was happening in. Foreign country. After digging through our emails,, We told them that we were actually 20 minutes late. After some further lengthy and fraught discussions they agreed, and that our vehicle was actually available. We were asked to wait outside for a shuttle bus. We had to wait for over 40 minutes for the vehicle to arrive in the searing Sicilian heat with no shade. We called them several times, but each time was told the car was on its way. No apologies were offered. When we enventually took the vehicle it was absolutely filthy and we could hardly see out of the windscreen until we had cleaned. The delays in negotiating with the company and then waiting for the shuttle bus cost us the best oart of two hours. COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE. "

" We were given a Lancia to begin with and we left the airport, but after just 2 miles we couldn't bear the screeching gearbox so we turned straight back to the airport to replace the vehicle. " My wife and I actually had a bad experience with your partner in Sicily. They were extremely rude to a couple ahead of us on arrival making a comment that the man was 'crying like an animal'. When we returned the car, I explained we had sustained a puncture and I used the emergency kit to inflate the tyre to be able to drive to 'a gommista' . We found a service centre several miles away in another town and had the tyre repaired - using up most of the day from our holiday. Naturally, we paid for the repair. The representative when I explained all this at car return simply said the tyre was new when we took the car( (not accurate of course). He also insisted we pay €50 for using the emergency kit. He refused to reimburse us for the repair cost. I said if we had not used the emergency kit we would have ruined the wheel driving it to the service centre. Again all he said was we must pay€ 50 and he had my credit card details. As you can imagine I was furious and he calmly walked away to deal with the next customer! " Things you need to know about the Jeep Avenger: 1) press Drive Mode up once to select Sport mode, makes joining motorways more predictable. 2) press the button with a car icon below the screen and disable Lane Assist to prevent the steering tugging you around when you're quite capable of steering without hitting the armco barriers 3) some days Apple Carplay works perfectly with google maps and some days it just doesn't co-operate so you may need to Forget My Jeep on your phone and re-pair device. Have fun and look out for those mopeds! "

" We were charged EUR 100 because I didn't have an international certificate for my US driving license. I've rented cars in Sicily many times in the past and this has never been a problem. We paid it because our trip depended on it. The model of vehicle they gave us was poor and it was not in a great state. They took 10 minutes to detail all of the damage on the car. We were waiting for the next way we were going to be charged. Alas, there were no more charges (so far) but the anxiety and extra expense made this one of the worst experiences I have had renting a car. " Honestly, I had a bit of a nightmare. I was trying to collect the car a few days after arriving in Sicily and I forget to take my passport. They had no flexibility in accepting a photograph of my passport and would only accept the physical passport, which I couldn't provided without making a 4 hour round trip. Having phoned the Noleggiare customer service number to discuss the issue, they said there was nothing they could do and I would lose the full amount that I had paid for the rental (circa £700). After some further discussion they offered to only take €150 of the rental cost, which I reluctantly agreed to, although whilst writing my account shows that I have not received any refund and the full amount remains with them. I appreciate that I made a mistake by forgetting my passport, but that have acted terribly and I feel totally taken advantage of. This experience has left such a sour taste in my mouth and there is no way I would ever recommend this company!! "

" Noleggiare had poor rating before we had our experience. It reflects badly on you as well. "
" The car was not the one we reserved, or silimar. We reserved one with 720l of boot space and got one with 448l. Counter staff were totally unhelpful and we had to pay €400 more for a larger car. This one then had adblue warnings after a couple of days. Noleggiare didn't reply to messages so I had to buy 15 litres and fill it before the car stopped working. Water also ran out after 3 or 4 days. The car was clearly not ready to be sent out. They also tried to charge us for a scratch on the car. Only when we showed photos of the car when we picked it up they backed off. Staff at the desk were also incredibly pushy about making us pay extra for more insurance. They guy kept coming back to it over and over again for a long time. Not a pleasant experience at all and I would not recommend anyone do business with them. "

" Probably the worst experience ever, for car hire. Unable to collect original booking with Sicily by Car, due to flight cancellation. Not their fault, or mine, but still charged a whole week booking cost. Tried to collect next day, but contract apparently forfeited. This seems to me totally unreasonable. If I have paid the whole hire in advance, then the car should be available for the whole period, regardless of being late to collect it. If not, then perhaps one days hire might be retained and the rest refunded. I had to then hire through a different company because trying to rebook with Sicily came up with unavailable. In total, booking through Europe by Car cost me £1,011 for 7 days, a little over the top I think. "

" I was told that I brought back the car dirty, and they can`t exam the car properly. There was some rain during my stay so of course the car got dirty, nothing special about that. Then I was told I can leave and then few days later received an email that I`ll be charged 50 euros for cleaning which I found utter nonsense. They need to wash the car before renting it out again. I was given the car with empty tank and brought it back with almost half tank so I asked them not to charge me for cleaning. They did anyway and never got any response to my email. Never had any issue like this before and I`ve been hiring cars for 10 years plus. "

" Do not use Avis Italia – they are scammers My wife and I hired a Mitsubishu Space in late September at Sicily's Palermo airport. When we picked the car up I noticed that it had a few minor marks and scratches and started taking pictures of the (white) bodywork. An Avis employee came up and told me I didn't need to take pictures because "we know this car". I carried on photographing anyway but I guess his comment must have distracted me because I ended up missing a few places. In retrospect, a red flag should have gone up and I should have done a video, because when we returned the car a week later to Catania airport, the guy on the reception desk took a full set of pictures. He claimed that several marks – all tiny ones and including one that he claimed was a dent and that I maintain was part of the contour of the bodywork – had been added to the car during our hire period. To the best of my knowledge, only one mark was new, a small scuff mark on the back bumper right next to a virtually identical mark that was there already – and was photographed by me- when we picked the car up. In other words, Avis is happy to hire out the car with small marks and indentations on the bodywork, but still charged me nearly £1,300 – including a fee for taking photos of the car - for damage when I returned it. So I would bet another £1,300 that none of my money will actually be spent on repairs, and would challenge Avis to prove otherwise – or that their outfit on Sicily isn't operating what my experience suggests is essentially a scam. I would also argue that the car was not serviced properly before I picked it up as the brakes started making a loud noise – worn pads? - several days into our hire period. On this basis I have I have instructed my credit card company to contest the charge and, since I have had no response from Avis several days after emailing them a letter of complaint, will also be referring the matter to the industry ombudsman. For me, this has been an expensive lesson learnt, and I would strongly recommend avoiding Avis in Italy even (or especially) if they appear to be offering a better deal than their rivals. "

" The car worked fine - although it had a broken read light and some dents. These were all disclosed (no problem there) but the car was far from immaculate. However, the biggest problem was the pick-up and drop-off process: * Pick-up... it was not at all obvious where to get the shuttle bus from. And we had to wait in the blazing heat for 20+ minutes because it was too small for the number of customers * Check in was INSANELY SLOW. It took 15+ mins to process each customer. UNBELIEVABLY inefficient and slot. It is hard to stress how poor it was. It was as if every customer was a total surprise to them and they had to enter every detail into their system, from scratch, several times over. I cannot understand how it could possibly have been so slow. * Drop-off was little better. A massive messed-up pile of contracts behind the desk, with the staff spending 2+ minutes painstakingly searching through to find each customer's contract. The staff were friendly but the organisation was ABYSMAL. The worst experience I have EVER had picking up a car. You should seriously consider removing this firm from your list. "

We would have liked to be forewarned about this so that we could investigate other options rather than being made to feel we had no choice and pressured into taking out this additional insurance at considerable cost. We also had 300 euros blocked on our credit card and were told on returning the car it would be reimbursed in a few days but I am still waiting a week later "

I signed for a car I hadn't seen and when I examined it the next morning (my pick up was in darkness) I found a wheel cap was missing (not mentioned on the paperwork). I emailed asking why the car hadn't been washed and pointing out the missing wheel cap. No reply. I emailed again. No reply. When I returned the car I found the member of staff to be short handed and unhelpful. He found a scratch on the car which I had no knowledge of. When I asked him how he didn't know it was an old scratch he said it wasn't marked on the paperwork. I pointed out that neither was the missing wheel cap. He didn't respond. He asked me to sign for my acceptance of the new scratch and I refused. He then pushed a sheet of paper at me telling me to write all of my complaints which I declined (I had a plane to catch and I didn't trust him not to throw it away once I'd left the cabin). " We had an awful experience. I forgot my driver's licence and despite my partner who was going to drive having his license and credit card, we had to rebook and pay for another car which was probably the original car we were going to hire! I understand that it may be in the small print but I don't understand why? I had a car that I had paid to hire. I had my ID to prove it was me, but wanted my partner to drive rather than myself. There seems no reasonable answer as to why we couldn't do that except that the supplier is taking advantage of customer misfortune. We had to pay an extra £500 for the person who was going to be a secondary driver to become the principal driver. Both AutoEurope who I phoned and Sicily by Car blamed each other for the fact that it was impossible to change the name even though we were there in front of them having to rehire the same car. It seems criminal robbery to me. Travel is difficult enough at the moment and the flat refusal of companies like yourselves to be reasonable in these situations just makes it worse. "

" I have delayed submitting my feedback pending a response to a request I submitted regarding additional charges. These included an extra day's hire because - by the time I had deposited the car and then walked into the terminal to return the keys - it was ten minutes past the "return by" time. It is a great pity that there is nobody available to check the car's condition when one drops the car back. I telephoned Customer Services (very helpful), and their representative agreed to submit and recommend a refund request, and I am pleased to say this has now been promised. One more piece of advice for those hiring from Palermo airport......the nearest petrol station is (I am told) 7km away. This was not something I was expecting, and ended up having to pay a signoficant premium for a fill-up with the car hire company. (standard practice for most hire companies). The car was in excellent condition, and was very comfortable to drive. Reception desk (on collection) was very helpful and professional, and I would definitely recommend this company for hiring a car out of Palermo airport. There are very many negative reviews about this company, but I can only be positive in the light of my own experience. "

The total hire was around 100 more expensive than the cheapest available but I felt better having the peace of mind. On picking up the keys from Autoeurope at Palermo Airport I received a VERY aggressive sales push from the Autoeurope rep. He virtually demanded that I buy the extra top up insurance from him. He told me that the insurance i had bought through Europcar's website was the broker's insurance and didn't mean anything and was worthless stating that any scratches more than 20mm would be charged for and could work out very expensive for me. Sicily's roads in towns can be very narrow and driving is very difficult be stressed. I held my ground and refused which seemed to annoy him. We arrived quite late at night and were tired after our long journey. On inspecting our hire Fiat 500 we were amazed and disappointed to see there were dents and scratches everywhere! The car was so dented and marked it would be difficult to find a door, wing or bumper without a mark. I videoed the entire exterior of the car in case we had any problems when we returned it. The car was great inside though it hadn't been cleaned! It performed flawlessly during our stay and I really enjoyed driving it! I usually drive a much larger automatic car but this small manual car was fun to drive! However the insurance threat was always in the back of my mind throughout the holiday. Returning the car was easy and the gentleman who booked the car in on my return couldn't have been friendlier and made the process very easy. 5 stars to this gentleman and 1 star or actually zero to the guy in the desk who tried to force extra insurance on me and made me worry about this during our holiday! " Had to wait over an hour and a half for my car (been renting cars for 40 years never waited so long) then was given a massive car I didn't really want and it was called an upgrade! Really annoyed with myself for not refusing the "upgrade" and sticking out for the size of car I ordered as I was staying in a small village in the hills and the vehicle was totally unsuitable and once I had the car I didn't want to take a day out of my holiday to try and change it. I had been travelling since the early hours and I didn't want to wait any longer in the crowded airport with all the other waiting and angry customers. The staff were helpful and friendly at the pick-up and friendly and efficient at the drop-off and dealt with the inevitable damage that came from using the unsuitable vehicle. To sum up, the pick-up was a drag but the staff were great. the rental was a nightmare, I never wanted to get the car out to drive anywhere ( I had to do a three point turn half way up the drive of my house to get to the road) the team at the drop off were helpful. " I recently rented a car from Sicily by Car via Auto Europe, based on my experience I advise against taking a chance with Sicily by Car and would avoid them at all costs, not worth wasting valuable holiday time dealing with this company. I booked to pick the car up (VW Golf or similar) at 1030hrs at Palermo Airport. I turned up to the desk and saw a huge queue of people waiting. Before I even got to the service desk, other customers were saying they'd been waiting in excess of 2 hours. I spoke to the 2 members of staff who were "pre-booking" and gave them my details, they then gave me a ticket and told me to wait. After nearly an hour I asked why was this taking so long, I was told it's just like this and everyone will have to wait. I then asked why the two members of staff who were sitting doing nothing and playing on their phones couldn't help and was told it wasn't their job. I was then told I should have booked direct with Sicily by Car and I would have been able to pay extra to be dealt with right away. I was told I shouldn't have booked via a third party and I'd have to wait. What an attitude to adopt. After 2hrs and 30min (which was an average wait time) I was dealt with. I was asked if I needed an Automatic, I advised I'd booked one and was then asked if I really needed it? I again told them I'd booked it and that's what I was expecting. I was given an Open Crossland, I asked if they'd ran out of Golfs and was told they didn't have any VW Golf's in their fleet and they weren't available. How can you advertise a Golf or similar if you don't physically have any Golf's for rent? I did confirm with the member of staff that it wasn't simply that they'd all be hired, he confirmed they didn't have any in their fleet. I was then asked if I wanted a week's insurance, this was €200! I told this that was too much, they then tried to stiff me for €30 for breakdown cover. Overall, they didn't have the car they advertised within their fleet (fairly certain you can't advertise something you don't have) and it took 2hrs and 30min to be served. Eventually when I got the keys to the car, I was told to pick it up, no one came out to the vehicle, the car had paint over 2 panels and a large scratch on the bonnet. I went back in and updated them, they didn't bother inspecting the damage and just marked it on the paperwork. Do not risk wasting time on your holiday, avoid Sicily by Car at all costs, arrogant staff (overheard them telling a customer "what would you like me to do? You're just going to have to wait") and a complete lack of customer care. I also heard the check in staff telling customers initially they'd been seen in 30 minutes (lies). "

We had to make alternative arrangements to ensure we were there on time but then had to wait anyway as no one on the desk at Budget at 10-30. "

" Picking up the car at Palermo's airport was ok. The car itself was below a basic standard anyone would expect in terms of cleanliness and and condition of the car. The car had not been cleaned when we received it also had several dents scratches but it seems to work. A major issue happened two days later when the car parked at our place of stay did not turn one anymore. Sicily by Car Car service Assistance sent a tow truck which fund that the car computer was flashing the sign that the car needed engine service so they had to take the car away. So we were left in the middle of the countryside in Sicily on our own no car no replacement and we where told by the customer service assistant that they could provide a replacement by going to the nearest SBC rental office which was in Trapani's airport about 100 km from were we were and all cost was on us. I complained but I was simply told that I could get in touch with their customer service, she could not do anything from her side. Luckily, the owner of the house where we were staying was extremely helpful and he drove me to Trapani airport the next day where I got a new car. To add to insult to injury after returning the car at Palermo's airport even there they could not tell me what would happen and in fact just a couple of days ago I received a notice to pay for the towing of the car. What a joke!! Sicily by Car clearly has no idea what customer service is!! They have not fulfil their contract providing a basic level of service with a proper a functioning car that would last through the rental. I wonted if their car are serviced regularly or this happens to other client!! What a shame. "

" Upon arrival no one told us we had to get a piece of paper with a number which would determine our position in the queue, it was utter chaos with no organisation whatsoever. Eventually we got our number and waited for our turn. One and a half hours later my number appeared. I found at this point that two of the four staff had been outside chatting and smoking outside instead of serving customers whilst the queue of ever angry customers got longer and longer. Things went from bad to worse as the member of staff tried her level best to sell me extra insurance at €20 a day. I pointed out I'd already purchased extra insurance with you. She implied your insurance was a waste of money and I'd regret not getting her extra insurance as you wouldn't pay out and it was a brand new car so I'd better be careful as the slightest scratch would cost me a lot of money. She was a pretty offensive piece of work and I can see how old or vulnerable people would easily be bullied into paying for cover they didn't need. Upon collection of the car I noticed the Ariel was snapped. I was aware that there was a charge of €39 for returning a car with this missing so i pointed it out to a member of staff who dismissed this and told me not to worry but declined to endorse my form confirming the damage. I would defiantly not recommend this rental company. Bunch of rip off merchants who are out to sell unnecessary insurance and use bully boy tactics when the customer refuses. "

He also tried to offer me a much bigger, more luxurious and much more expensive car, justifying his choice with his wish to provide me with more comfort and luxury. Had I wanted such a car, I would have ordered it on-line. In the end, he rented us an Opel Mokka X, with both my partner and myself nominated as drivers. By that time, the cost of hiring the car had increased from £68.47 to 432.80 Euros + £68.47 (roughly equivalent to 500 Euros). I was not aware that 232.80 Euros of the amount comprised a deposit. The Opel Mokka X was too big for me and I did not feel confident that I could manage such a big car and was not able to drive it at all. I also feel that the car was very unsuitable for the extremely narrow streets in the region. I must admit that I do understand why your company would wish their clients to purchase full insurance considering the condition of the roads and typical driving behaviour in the area, but I felt that I was misled when I booked the car on-line. When it came to returning the car, I did not want to give the assistant in the office my copy of the rental agreement because, having already suffered a loss of trust in your company, I did not believe that he would return the documents to me. Your employee immediately got very angry with me and started to shout at me. Then he called us "Cazzo!" several times. Considering the treatment we had received from your company so far, I was not surprised that your employees have such a low opinion of your clients. Some other employees then came in to the office to see what the problem was. Then another attendant served us, returned the documents and a note returning 232.80 Euros. " Too long to get the car at the airport, very slow process at the desk considering the high number of customers in the queue. They insisted in us getting extra insurance although we had insurance already, trying to scare us about the high levels of vandalism in Sicily. we had to repeat at least 10 times to the guy at the desk that we didn't want the extra insurance. We then agreed on putting a deposit £800 on our credit card that we found fair enough, however he wasn't familiar with the system and was going to repeat the transaction a second time, luckily we are familiar with POS and asked the manager to look into this, that she did and we avoided a second undue deposit being blocked on our CC. Upon collection the Car had more scratches than the ones marked on the papers, so we had to show to an employee, very reluctant to come out from their air-conditioned hut and come and see the car in the car park under the scorching sun. One eventually came out and she was very nice. The car was clean but not too clean, it had not been hoovered and we found used motorways tickets from the previous renter. The drop off was quick and efficient. "

After speaking with the guy at the counter he recommended that I take the car to the local garage and fill up the tires with air. He did say it's probably just a computer issue as the tires look fine as he pressed his finger up on the tire. This did turn out to be the case. But everytime I entered the car I would get this error message which obviously sowed a seed of doubt. As a customer who is paid for a service I would not expect to be told to take it to a service centre to have the tires checked this should've been done for me. " Avis Palermo are a joke. Two hours+ waiting to get a car. The car had no navigation disk and the GPS given was without any mounting mechanism, so useless (used Google Maps instead). Three days into the rental we had to make a three hour round trip for them to add 'Adblue' additive or the car would stop working. But worst of all, Avis trying to charge 690 euros for no reason at all, and now having to fight to get this returned. If you read Avis at Palermo are crooks, believe it and avoid them. "

" Booking through Auto Europe gave us additional reassurance in an area noted for car rental problems. During the booking experience and thereafter, we were happy that we had made the right choice. "
" This was an efficient service, both at pick-up and drop-off. We had booked for a VW Polo or equivalent, but were offered a Citroen C3 instead, as it had a larger boot. The condition of the vehicle appeared good, but the car's performance seemed so poor that we suspected there was a problem with the vehicle. After refilling with good quality petrol, the performance improved substantially. That led us to suspect that the car had been supplied with degraded fuel. Just prior to returning the vehicle, we refilled it with fuel only to find that the fuel gauge showed only about 80%. After another attempt to refill at a separate filling station just along the same road, the fuel gauge again showed only 80%. We were assured by Sixt that this is a common problem with Citroens. We were quite surprised, then, to be charged around €10 for extra fuel in our final invoice emailed to us after our return to the UK. Reading about other car hire experiences in Southern Italy, on the whole, we feel that we were treated reasonably well and would be happy to use Sixt again. "

" We had a very bad experience with this rental. We waited 1.5 hours in a large queue to pick up the vehicle. Eventually we paid 40 Euro to be upgraded to a premium member so we could pick up or car as we had an event that we had to get to. Once this was done we then went through a 20 minute process at the counter where the assistant tried to sell us additional extras. Once we eventually got given the paperwork and went to pick up the car we had to wait a further 30 minutes. We were told the car was just being washed. We were renting a Renault Clio and I counted over 5 other Renault Clios in the car park ready for pick up but were told we would have to wait. Eventually after waiting 30 minutes another staff member appeared, who seemed to be a manager, who then found or car keys in the key section and gave them to us. Clearly the car had been there all along but no apology was offered. Very unimpressive. "

" Overall it was a very efficient service. The issue with the original car was sorted out very quickly and without any dispute which was good considering it was the middle of our holiday. " The initial cost when booked was satisfactory, at the time of the pick, i felt totally ripped off, by the enormous costs of 'the excess protection'which was 3 times the price of the hire of the vehicle. " 1.) There was a disagreement as to what type of vehicle had been booked. The representative focused on the fact I had order a seven seat vehicle and that was what he had provided with the Peugeot 5008. I had researched the Citroen Space Tourer before booking it and was confident that although it was a seven seat vehicle with room for two large bags and three small bags, we would be able to seat six people and accommodate the luggage we would take with us in order to get from the airport to our accommodation and back. 2.) €2,800 Excess is not described in any of the information I had review before booking, and was not apparent until I arrived at the airport, and is far in excess of any levels we are used to here in the UK. I personally have vehicle insure fully comprehensive, with excess levels of £150, and £200, I would not consider insuring a vehicle with a company with an excess over £2,500. This should be highlighted before the booking is confirmed in order to be transparent and allow people make an informed decision. This is a significant condition of the rental, and is likely to be more influential in the decision making process than limited mileage, or whether the vehicle is returned with a full tank of fuel, etc. It is not a risk I would want to be exposed to driving in a foreign country, on unfamiliar roads, in an unfamiliar vehicle, in my case much larger than I usually drive. "
" As we were a party of six adults, including two in their 80's, I had booked a Citroen Space Tourer (Full size van) "or similar" as it had seven seats and I estimated that we would be able to fit all of our luggage in, it showed sliding doors on the side, which I thought would give better access for the elderly. I had also selected the more expensive hire to included "Excess guarantee with extensive coverage including wheels, underside and roof". On arrival at the collection desk, after queuing for almost an hour, I was told that the vehicle we had been allocated was a Peugeot 5008, and that there was a €2,800 excess associated with this vehicle. In order to waive this excess a charge of €424.62 was made. The two rearmost seats in the 5008 are not full size seats as they lift out of the boot floor. With one of these seats folded into the floor to provide the required six seats, there was not sufficient space to accommodate all of our luggage, irrespective of how I tried to pack it. I returned to the collection desk and was eventually provided with a larger vehicle, a Ford Tourneo, which was perfect, and in fact a full size van, however I had to pay an additional charge of €234.20. On closer inspection of the two rental agreements I had, there were other spurious additional charges added. I had paid £785.31 in January, and was expecting to pay around £45 at the airport for an additional driver. Before I could leave the airport in a vehicle which was "or similar" to the vehicle booked I had paid an additional €785.96, over £700. "

" The Fiat 500 supplied by Hertz was virtually brand-new. But driving in Sicily is terrifying, especially so with a pristine vehicle on an island where every single other car seems to have some form of damage. We survived the onslaught until the very last day of our holiday, when a driver came round a bend on the wrong side of the road, necessitating a swerve to avoid him - and resulting in a paint chip to the front bumper and a kerbed alloy wheel. I'm well familiar with all of the online horror stories about car rental companies charging a fortune for minor damage - but the extra cost invoiced was just 130 Euro - pretty much the real, actual cost of those types of repair. Very relieved at how reasonable they were, and happy that we booked through yourselves with a major international rental company. 100% all round, thanks. "

I protested and was told that the underside, wheels and glass were NOT covered. I was told that Autoeuropa know this? I was unhappy and rang the assistance number for AE - it just rang out. Other people were getting frustrated as I was delaying the queue and I ended up paying for excess insurances at the desk. I suspected and now know I was conned. Complete and total stitch up and these jokers are endorsed by AE and share their logo at the desk. Feel completely let down as couldn't get through to the supposed assistance number. I intend to email AE separately but my advice is if the advertised deal seems too good to be true, then avoid it! "

" On pick up at Palermo airport there was a huge and somewhat threatening, in that we were highly likely to have an incident, pressure to take an additional insurance on top of our guaranteed excess refund which we had already paid for. This we were told was the only way we would be covered if we were hit and the other driver did not admit to being involved in which case our excess would not be refunded. And also it was intimated that it would be very difficult to get a refund in the event of the vehicle being stolen which didn't seem to them to be out of the ordinary. It felt like a big con and It came to almost the same cost as the original car rental. We took it for peace of mind and once we saw the state of the fairly new car we were given - scrapes all over the bumpers and minor dents - we were glad we did but resented the way the package had been presented to us as the excess refund cover would cover such eventualities. In the event we had no incidents but we didn't drive much as it was horrible to drive with the gear problem and too far to take back for a replacement. The clutch on the car we were given was dreadful it became evident after driving a while that it wasn't just driving a different car the clutch was at fault. It was very difficult to get it into gear, into first on starting in particular, and it often jumped out. We mentioned this on return and they were not interested. It had less than 700km on the clock so a fairly new car just badly in need of service. "

In between times I was, of course, gently pressed to take out further insurances. I declined as I have an annual policy to cover such things. The diesel vehicle came with 48200 km on the clock and 10 listed scratches, bumps and minor dents to which I insisted on adding 3 more. I photographed the vehicle from all angles too! After a couple of days the front brakes started to sound a bit scratchy but, since they worked perfectly well, we didn't go through the hassle of trying to change the car. The CSA tried to sell me add ons even though I explained I purchased accident damage waver and additional insurance online, she insisted this was valid with them as it was purchased from a third party, I refused to pay the additional extra. She then told me breakdown cover wasn't included and wanted another 35 Euro to cover this, again I refused. These services should be part of the complete rental agreement not additional extras. I go to Sicily several times a year and have used other car rental companies that have provided a better more comprehensive service. On collection of the car there was no one to do the hand over, so I couldn't check, agree and sign off any existing damage to the vehicle, this annoyed me. I pre-booked a Panda/500 but was presented with a Citroen C3 which I didn't want but had no choice, I ordered a small car because the street of Sicily are narrow. Giving you a bigger car is another ploy from the rental company as you have a higher chance of having a scrape or incident. Overall, my rental experience with you was a 6/10, you could do a lot better! "

The main issue was that I forgot that for Dollar, we should look for Hertz, and I first went to Enterprise, and it took an age to then drive from Enterprise to Hertz because the traffic was horrible. " Unfortunately, we had a problem with the car on our final afternoon (engine overheating + alarm sounded), which meant we had to stop the car and call for help. It took a long time to get through to the breakdown assistance service who then said they would send a tow truck within 45 minutes (at 12:29 approximately) which would then tow the car away. We then received a call from the towing company who said they would arrive in an hour (in fact it was about an hour and 15 minutes later). When the towing company guy arrived he said he did not know what he had to do. I again called the assistance service [again on an international no.] who explained to the guy what he had to do in Italian. I confirmed with the Europe Assistance guy what he had said to the towing company guy. However, the towing guy decided that the car was OK to drive – despite his admission that he was not a mechanic – and he attempted to drive off. I had to physically stand behind his truck while he was trying to reverse and blowing his horn while phoning back to Europe Assistance to confirm that they had said he had to tow away the car. When I finally got through, Europe Assistance again confirmed that they had told the guy to tow away the car. This delay meant that it was over three hours since we had first stopped with the problem. My issue is that: 1) The towing company should have been instructed about what they needed to do before they arrived 2) The towing guy (he said his name was Tio? and would not give his last name) behaved obnoxiously and did not do what he had been instructed to do from the guy at Europe Assistance 3) The towing guy had no knowledge to decide that the car was safe to drive, and would have placed us in a very dangerous situation –drivers in Sicily seem to have scant respect for safety distances between cars, meaning that if we need to stop in an emergency it would have been very dangerous! We had been driving the car for nine days and the problem with overheating was not normal. We had only driven a matter of a few kilometres that day and the engine was very hot – i.e. the bonnet was too hot to open. We left the car to cool down for over an hour and it had cooled down a little; however, the first time we accelerated, an alarm sounded and we stopped the vehicle at the earliest opportunity and called for help. When the towing guy inspected the car it has been stopped with the bonnet up for almost two hours meaning that the engine had cooled down. "

" It took two hours to collect the car on arrival at the Airport. Once you are seen the staff are efficient and helpful. I had a puncture in the middle of the holiday, I used their authorised garage to try and replace the tyre but as the tyre was not in stock they would not order the tyre until authorisation was received. This took two days to arrive which meant it was the weekend resulting in a 4 day wait for a replacement tyre. Although the car had a spare tyre it was small and I did not feel confident using the car. The company provided good followup service with telephone calls to monitor progress but it still took four days to provide a replacement tyres and two trips to their approved garage to try and achieve this. The directory was so limited and did not have many places that were significant in our locality. We ended up using our phone for navigation. They said there was no problem with my credit card on 1 July, and they had no record of an attempt to block any amount on my card on that day. " I had a great car rental experience with Enterprise. At the counter they told me that I needed two credit cards for security purposes. I had previously called Enterprise to check this with them as I thought this sounded odd and had been told over the phone that it would be ok. I relayed this message to the service staff and they made an exception for me. The car was in excellent condition and the staff were very helpful with changing the GPS language to English for me and I was driving away within 30 minutes or originally arriving at the desk, so a very quick service. A whole set would cost about 20 but the point is that the scratch was so minute it was hardly noticeable and did not need replacing. " Why do the counter staff always try and pressurise customers to take out extra insurance? I was offered breakdown and vandalism cover. Surely if the car breaks down the company will arrange for someone to come out. I've never been asked to pay for this before. Similarly with vandalism cover. Your T&Cs did not say this was excluded. You should add advice on your website about additional insurance and what is really needed as I always feel stressed when driving abroad as even with full excess cover option I am never sure exactly what I'm insured against. I've always booked with you when I need a car on holiday and have always got a better car than I expected. I recommend you to all my friends. "

Although we had paid excess waiver insurance at the time of booking, Firefly advised they had to block 1500 Euro on our credit card. This was above the daily transaction limit we had arranged prior to departure from Australia and as a consequence we had to purchase additional insurance for 194 Euro (despite insurance with Auto Europe). They blocked this amount as well as 250 Euro on our credit card. When we returned the car, they withdrew 194 Euro from our card, but the blocked amount was not released. Despite repeated phone calls, the amount of 444 Euro remained blocked until 24 June, causing us lots of problems. The car was not in the best shape either. "

Our main gripe was the fact that we had to pay for a full tank of petrol which we didn't need for our short stay. It was returned with nearly more than a quarter of a tank left for which there was no reimbursement. It is fairer for the customer to pay for the petrol they actually use.
