Car hire at Palermo Airport - Discovering a magic island made easy

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and a car hire from Palermo Airport promises you a convenient and fast start for your stay and will enable you to discover all the corners of this enchanting region with the utmost flexibility. Sicily boasts a long and rich history and everywhere you will notice the legacy left by all the numerous settlers. Palermo was founded by the Phoenicians merchants. After them came the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs and the Normans. In the city you will find many buildings displaying an amazing mixture of Moorish and Norman style and also very lively street markets that resemble the Arabic suks. If you have time and are eager to drive around, you can do daily trips or even organise a journey along the perimeter of the island staying in different cities. Catania and the Etna volcano are a must, alongside with the beautiful city centre and the Greek ruins in Siracusa, and the Valley of Temples in Agrigento.

Auto Europe works with the most important international and local car hire suppliers to offer you the most convenient car rental prices. We strongly recommend you to book in advance, especially during peak times, such as Easter and in the summer. Terminals

Palermo Airport consists of one single terminal organised on three levels. On the ground floor, you can find the arrival hall and the car rental desks; on the first floor the departures and on the second floor the security checkpoints. Throughout the terminal, you will have information screens that will guide you to the correct check-in desks – with information being provided at least two hours before departure. Palermo Airport is open around the clock. Only bars, shops, and other activities have limited opening hours, normally corresponding to the landing and arrival times of the planes.

    Airport Facilities

Palermo airport offers all kinds of facilities to make passengers feel comfortable. It has three floors above the ground and one underground level with access to the trains. There is a bar on each floor. On the ground floor besides the arrival hall, there are the car rental desks and a currency exchange office. The first floor hosts the departure hall and also Customs and Tax Refund, a chapel, a pharmacy, a nursery, and some assistance desks. Most of the eateries and shops are located on the second floor, either before or mostly after the security checkpoints. Here, you will be able to find typical Sicilian food and souvenirs;a luggage wrapping service is also available.

How to get to and from Palermo Airport

It is approx. a 35-minute drive with a car rental from Palermo Airport to Palermo city centre. From the airport follow the green motorway E90 signs to Palermo and upon approaching the city take the downtown exit “Palermo centro”. Vice versa, from Palermo to the airport just follow the motorway indications for the airport “Aeroporto”.

If you haven’t picked up a rental car yet, you can reach Palermo either by taxi, underground train or bus. Taxis are parked right outside the entrance hall, on the ground level. The fare to Palermo ranges between 35 and 45 €. A taxi information desk is also available. A cheaper way to reach Palermo in just half an hour is by underground train, line A. The train station is located on the underground level. The ticket costs approx. 5,90 € for adults. Alternatively, you have plenty of bus connections. The bus stops are located in front of the arrival hall exit, to the right. The Prestia and Commandè bus line brings you to Palermo central station in approx. 50 minutes. Furthermore, direct bus lines are covering all the northern part of the island. The most important routes head to Trapani, San Vito lo Capo, Agrigento, and Catania.

    Parking Tips

There are three parking areas available: P1, P2 and P3, when you rent a car at Palermo Airport. You can book your parking in advance directly on the airport website or pay at the airport at the automatic cashiers, at the 24-hour desk or the help desk. The cost depends on how close the parking is to the terminal and on the duration of the stay. The first 15 minutes are free of charge. The closest is the P2, a short-stay parking area located just in front of the terminal. The P3 is a low-cost car parking 700 m away from the Terminal. P1, the long-stay parking, and P3, the low-cost parking, are both 700 m (0.4 mi) away from the terminal and both connected to it by a free shuttle bus service.

If you rent a car at the Palermo airport and head directly to the city centre, you need to know that most of it is a restricted access zone (Zona Traffico Limitato - ZTL). Parking there is allowed only to inhabitants or people who bought a pass beforehand. Free parking spots right outside this area are pretty rare. You may find blue line toll parking, and in this case you need to buy a ticket at the tobacconist’s or some other partner shops. The ticket has to be placed on the dashboard, well visible, and needs to have the right day and hour scratched. If you want to save time, head directly to one of the toll parking areas. There is one close to the central rail station Notarbarolo. There is also an underground multi-level parking at Piazza Orlando. Here you can find a detailed list of the toll parking areas in Palermo.
