When I arrived at the booking desk, we were charged USD 57 to add an additional driver for the period of the hire. Their system was not permitting the addition of another driver (aged 31) without charge and the rental voucher was unclear. In the "Your rental includes" section it stated "All additional drivers age 25 and over". However, in the "Additional fees to be paid locally, if required" section it stated "Additional drivers: Included" which the service desk attendant used to justify the additional charge. " Please see box 3 above. Although we had prepaid for all of the enhancements on the Auto Europe website, the details had not been transmitted to Enterprise. Enterprise would not look at the Auto Europe voucher and only looked at their own system. We did not know how much Enterprise would charge us until the end of our trip. This worried us for the whole of our trip. In the end there was no additional charge BUT you could have saved all of that worry by transferring all of the details to Enterprise. We are very disappointed in Auto Europe. "

" We have been hugely disappointed with the awful service provided by Thrifty. We went to pick up our car after already been travelling for over 20 hours hoping for a straightforward process. We when we finally got to the front of the queue the initial interaction was very pleasant. We were informed that we had pre purchased all the needed insurance so there would be no additional costs and we could adjust our drop off time which was helpful. We decided to go for the pre purchased fuel at a set rate to allow us to drop off the car empty. So when we were asked to pay plus the deposit, I was shocked to see additional items added. I disputed it and was informed that these had been removed. Once we had the car it was a great and exactly what we had hoped for. The real problems occurred when it came to drop-off the car luckily, we were met by an agent rather than just dropping the keys as they informed us that even though the sales agent had told us and given us paperwork saying "return empty" they had in fact not added this to our booking and we were going to be charged over $12 a gallon rather than the agreed $5.50. We were concerned about timing, but we decided for the ridiculous cost we had to leave the complex and go and refuel next to the airport. Also it is worth noting that the agent sold it as this is the cheapest fuel, you'll get within 10 miles of the airport, and we went to a station less than 3 miles away that was $4.95. Multiple staff members were shocked to see this, and one said they would report this to their manager. However, no one was helpful or willing to take responsibility for any issue caused. We were advised to go to the complaints desk and lodge a complaint. We waited in the queue only to be told that they don't deal with that sort of thing, and we would need to go wait elsewhere. At this point we were too concerned about missing our flight to continue perusing it at that time. My final dismay was when I was sent my automatic receipt which still contained some of the paid extras which I disputed and was told it was removed. This has added a large amount of stress to the whole travelling process and put a real damper on a fantastic holiday up until that point. It appears the agent was telling us one thing and then not carrying out actions. Adding prepaid fuel but not doing it and then removing additional extras and then not taking them off. I hope thrifty will reimburse/void these extra costs that were told they were removed and apologies for this truly awful experience. "

" We endured a horrible day on 20/9 two flight cancellations and eventually put on VS41 5.30pm out of Heathrow to San Francisco. We landed and got through without luggage due to missing luggage and arrived at the Hertz desk at 10.15pm. The only counter representative said are you on the two hour waiting list I said no I'm picking up my car and he said no cars need to wait two hours. After all the debarcle of the day I started to confront said rep and he made a call and popped out the back and said as you've had a day that sounds horrible I have found you a car. " Having made the reservation several weeks before travel, we were told on arrival at San francisco Airport there would be a delay of around an hour for collection as no cars were available. This turned into a 3+ hr delay! Totally unacceptable. Little/no updated information other than being told there was a major conference in town - frankly not our problem! The delay on collecting the car meant we missed valuable time in napa including a wine tasting visit- the whole point of visiting this area!! Overall a bad experience which we have never had before with any car rental. On top of this, we were 'persuaded' to take out additional products amounting to $243.34 - significantly increasing the overall cost of hire. We had lost the will to fight these charges as we simply wanted to get von with our travel plans. We were one of many in this position. An awful experience. I have tried to raise this complaint with Dollar without success. As part of the Hertz group (where our car was originally sourced) this failure in customer service and product delivery is damaging for all companies. We have used Auto Europe in the past for car rentals but will think twice about using Dollar. We trust this will be looked into and our email sent to the appropriate department. " My scheduled pick up time was 16:00 but it took ~3 hours to pick up our vehicle. The counter staff sent me looking for a car which was not in the garage. I had to go back upstairs and explain the car wasn't there. I was given a different car to look for which, as it turned out, was also not in the garage. I asked members of staff where the car was and they assured me it was being cleaned and would arrive momentarily. After 15 mins I decided to go and look at the cars being cleaned.......my car was not there! Being lied to is unacceptable! I had to go back upstairs (again!) and explain the car wasn't there. I was told to get in a car that had been sitting in the garage from the start!!! I only had one night in San Francisco and this delay took a major chunk out of my evening. Unfortunately the disappointment didn't stop there. The car had awful wheel wobble at 70mph (not great when driving ~1800 miles) and the cruise control didn't work. Also the car had a lot of cosmetic damage where it had been bashed so it didn't look smart! All in all, an awful experience! "

Insisted on taking a note of my cc details so they could process the transaction the next day as they needed to "hide the transaction" from their airport branch as the car I hired was required by the airport. The car itself was quite damaged and had a suspension warning light on it. I raised with the staff but no alternative was available. A few days later the oil warning light came on, and the powered tailgate stopped working. Took into nearest branch to ask for a swap but no similar cars were available. Advised I could still drive the car. 2nd to last day the A/C failed which given it was around 35 deg c was totally unacceptable. Took to another branch and thankfully was able to swap it out for a replacement. Then on return I was billed for fuel, an extra driver, and the use of a sat nav. I had returned the car full, and the use of a sat nav and extra driver were included in my booking!!! Thankfully I have had a refund as they realised their error when I spoke to their customer services. I'm afraid I have had a very poor experience of Budget, and suggest you review your relationship with them. I had to take time out of my holiday twice to try and swap the car over to another which I was less than happy about. "

" The hire process was good, car was good BUT I declined the premium breakdown cover as I have my own. I was very disappointed to find they still charged me for it. I know they will say that it's my fault for signing but I believed I was signing for a tank of petrol and a deposit. The screen you have to sign doesn't show you much and after a 24 hour journey you are not at your sharpest. The practice of adding this charge seems a bit underhand to me. "

I did not receive my final invoice till 4 days later and I had been charged for an extra four days!!! " We liked the car we were allocated and we visit USA quite often and have used many different car hire companies and indeed have recommended many to our friends and family. it is a shame that such sales stunts such as this should tarnish what would have been a great experience. As a result of our disappointment it is unlikely that we would recommend Thrifty to anyone. "
" We were allocated what appeared to be a reasonably new vehicle which suited our requirements. On arrival we realized that we hadn't requested a Sat Nav therefore asked if the vehicle already had a manufacturer fitted Sat Nav. We were told that if we required a Sat Nav it would be an extra $150. We decided to pay the extra for the benefit of a Sat Nav. The receptionist seemed to struggle to ad on to our bill the additional amount and suggested that as she couldn't add the transaction onto the computer at that time that she would discount the Sat Nav to $93 or so which would be settled by us on return of the vehicle. When we got to our car we realised that the model we had booked a Chevrolet Tahoe already had a manufacturers fitted Sat Nav for which we were being charged $93!!! The use of the Sat Nav which was already fitted to the car we booked would have cost the hire company nothing as it was already in the vehicle. Due to this we feel a little misled and let down by what seems to be an unfair transaction. We would have gladly paid the $150 should we have reserved a smaller car without a Sat Nav as standard. Shame on you Thrifty Car Hire! "

Not compaining about the free upgrade (to convenience Budget), but that they tried to sell it to me. Must admit I didn't take much notice of the form that was presented on a counter top screen and signed it. Only afterwards did I realise I had been charged $19.68 for "non-contract extras". Fool me for not taking my time and checking before signing, but not impressed at not having these "extra" explained to me, not being asked if I wanted them and being told a bare faced lie, that there were no extra charges. Apart from that the car was great, clean and a pleasure to drive. "

The only other car offered was a hardtop of another male and model. I waited a further 10 minutes and a Mustang Convertible was found and handed over. However the car was filthy and not cleaned but I had no choice to accept. For the past week, we asked to replace the vehicle with a 7-seat vehicle. We were unable to get reasonable service in this regard. We vusuted at the San Francisco and San Jose airports. At each station we received different details and different costs. In the end, we didn't make the replacement and rented another vehicle at another local company. "

" I originally booked a Chevrolet Suburban but on picking up the car i was told it may not be big enough and offered an upgrade to a GMC Yukon XL for $144 which was apparently bigger. It was only later in our holiday when we parked next to a Suburban and realised they were the same car that i queried things. An internet search showed both cars are identical in size. Queried with Avis via twitter who advised they would raise with management and adjusted the hire so that $144 was removed. Whilst this response was good the initial sale of the upgrade was dishonest and we wouldnt have realised without coming across the original car we had hired in a random car park and realising it was the same size. " The rental got off to a very bad start and lost us 2 hours. There was contradictory info of the booking confirmation and rental voucher. One stated that there was a THT Combo desk in the terminal, the other stated that it was at the car rental centre. In fact there was a THT Combo desk at neither. No one at the rental centre had heard of THT Combo and it was only after we had treked back to the terminal, searched again for the desk that we persuaded someone at an information desk to investigate the matter for us. He eventually advised that we should go to the Thrifty desk at the rental centre so a further trek back there with all our luggage. We reported to the Thrifty desk and the counter staff there had never heard of THT Combo but fortunately they found our booking on their system. A very bad start to our holiday. "

" AutoEurope booking was OK but Thrifty staff in San Francisco & policies regarding breakdown insurance were very disappointing. The fact that Thrifty disabled the cigarette lighter/power socket was frustrating i.e. no power for GPS / phone, etc. "
" Thrifty staff went to great lengths to try & persuade me to upgrade the car I had booked. They tried to 'guilt' me into it saying my children & wife would be uncomfortable, that my luggage would not fit in, that the car was unsuitable, etc. In the event, the car was amply big enough with plenty of room. The counter staff also tried to persuade me to take breakdown insurance, warning me that I would be charged several hundred dollars for a call out if the car broke down. I had been under the impression that breakdown insurance would be included as standard, & if the car broke down, it was Thrifty's fault & job to resolve it at their expense! The car cigarette lighter / power socket had also been disabled as the fuse had been removed - meaning our sat-nav ( GPS or other devices) could not be plugged in. "

The person who handled my pick-up was more interested in her mobile phone than dealing with me - even sending text messages whilst holding my credit card. Then told me I had no breakdown cover and it would cost me $500 for recovery if there was a problem (including a puncture as the car had no spare!). She then told me the car was inside the building when it was outside, she never told me I needed or gave me the exit code for the gate to leave the premises - I had to walk back to the office to get the code and wait for her to come off her mobile phone before she would reluctantly deal with me. I'll never book with Europcar again, this was the worst car rental experience I've ever had and I rent a lot of cars. "

" My flight was delayed and I phoned Auto Europe to notify them that I would be late picking up my car from San Francisco. They were not very helpful as all they did was give me a phone number for the car hire company in America for me to ring them. As my contract was with Auto Europe I could reasonably expect them to do that. It was 4am in America and no one answered the phone so I did not know whether they would save my car for my late arrival, as it states that you must notify them. As it was an 11 hour flight I had no further opportunity to phone them. "

As I'm new to the car and US driving I expect a run-down of functionality and a quick-start for SatNav, cruise, checking fluids, trip computer, etc I would have appreciated more certainty over the size of vehicle. Not all the cars in the SUV range were big enough (for 4 adults over 2,000 miles) e.g. Rav4, so I ended up committing to a full SUV which was really too big, physically and the 5.3L engine (I assume it wasn't the 6.2L but the documentation and manual didn't specify!) "

Out vehicle was not ready for collection at the confirmed time as the previous rental had extended their rental period. This caused us to kiss an event at our destination as we were 2 hours late departing and had a 4 hour journey ahead of us. " I have used alamo on numerous occasions over the past 6 years, lots of times via autoeurope. This is definately the worst rental experience I have had. Hopefully it is a one off. "
" We picked up the rental car expecting it to be full of fuel. Yes it was on the F mark, 10 miles down the road it was falling fast. On subsequent fillings of the car I noticed that we did between 80 and 100 miles before pointer moved off the F. As the car was averaging 20-21 miles per gallon we were didled out of approximately 4-5 gallons ($17.60 - $22). The car had food bits all around it and I guess someone decided to throw some kind of liquid about as dripping staing all around the inside, not very clean. In England it is illegal to have an empty screen wash, which is exactly what occured. This was noticed after a few days on the first time I need to clean the screen due to adverse weather conditions. Very dangerous as it caused major streaking therefore poor visibility. I did mention all of this on my return but nothing really said. "

There was no signpost at SF Airport where to go to for the shuttle bus which takes you a few miles away from the airport. Not much fun when you've travelled for 12 hours. Also, the guy at the desk wasn't to impressed, that I've already have payed for an additional car rental insurance which covered me for everything and also wanted to sell me a toll pass for which no need was as it is clearly signposted in the States when and were you would go and use a toll line. " I had a terrible experience in SFO with this rental, and spent significant amounts of time trying to get "justice". While I have had very good conversations with Customer Service at AutoEurope and promised I would hear back, this so far has led to nothing. I have yet to hear from AutoEurope for their side of the responsibility, namely stating the location of the rental as SFO Airport and not disclosing its actual location OFF the airport until the Voucher is paid! This has nothing to do with Europcar: and now it is still the case that the location is listed on the Airport! I am terribly disappointed in Auto Europe as I have raved about their good Customer Service and promised the earth when I speak to agents on the phone! How false! "

I tired to pay the toll online but they wouldn't accept my credit card as only USA address allowed - so they will land me a $45 fine - not happy - that is ridiculous!! "

" Auto Europe found me the best price of all the price comparison sites I used, and I appreciated the fact that there were no hidden extras (apart from the additional breakdown cover). However, it was not obvious that the pickup location was off the airport site. "

" Having read some horrendous reviews of Europcar, were very anxious about using then. In fact had I read them within the cancellation window, would have cancelled & rebooked with another provider. The pick up process was stressful with us having to fill in a sheet with all defects listed. Also took pics of every scrape, dent & scuff. Tried not to let the stress of this affect our hire & vacation. BUT the return process was good, no phantom charges as were described in reviews. Transfer back to airport seamless with the driver being more than helpful. Again took loads of pics of the car upon return. On booking I thought the depot was on airport so was disappointed as having to travel on the skytrain to the rental car area only to find we had, with all our luggage, take a shuttle with a 20min trip to the depot to sign for & pick up our car. The car could have been cleaner, especially on the inside where some rubbish & hairs stuck to seat backs from the last renter were present. The pick up driver was more interested in her phone than helping us, so as 60year olds we had to handle, without assistance, our luggage both in & out of the bus whilst the driver was enthralled in her phone. The return driver was just the opposite, lifting luggage from our car onto & off the bus & offered even to find & place our luggage on a trolley. Saying all this I will avoid Europcar in future "

At no point was I made aware that my booking wasn't actually with Europcar but with local company "Advantage" 2. Wasn't made aware that car rental was 20 minutes off terminal 3. Over 1 hr wait in line at rental counter for no apparent reason - there were approx 4 customers in front of me. A quick google search of Advantage brings up this same experience time and time again. 4. No apologies from staff for the wait, abysmal customer service and attitude. One example - laughing at a foreign customer who asked them to repeat something as he didn't quite hear the English first time. 5. Being incorrectly charged 176 USD refuelling fee after bringing back the car with a full tank, a receipt of the fuel purchase and confirming with the clerk who examined the vehicle that everything was settled with no fee. 6. Having to spend 30 minutes on the phone to Europcar customer service to have the above reversed. 7. Incurring a foreign transaction fee from my credit card company for the above. "

A large Toyoto 4 runner with a large dent and scratch down the side, and in poor condition I ended up with a Ford Mustang convertable but had to pay a large upgrade fee and was told it would be 238 dollars extra and that fuel was included and to bring it back empty. On return they charged me 57 Dollars for fuel even though I argued that they said it was included and a extra amount of taxes so after a concession of 25 dollars I paid an extra 337.64 dollars or 260.29 pounds over my original payment of approx £358.00 , I think that this was an excessive amount to pay extra when they did not have the car I wanted or a suitable alternative. " Recommendation was given to hire FastTrack tollgate system since there would be many toll roads in California, especially around LA - we were explained that there were no other options to pay toll roads. The only toll we encountered was Golden Gate bridge, which could be paid via licence plate registration via internet. In LA we did not find toll roads. Hire of FastTrack was more than $200. This was a rip-off by a lying sales person. "

" I will spend a bit more money (or maybe less) with a different company where car options and choices are available next time. This is the service we had when we previously rented vehicles from e.g. Las Vegas. We had other lower cost options available when we booked, but I decided to for a more expensive rental option, but this proved to be a very bad decision. We looked forward to our US roadtrip, which turned into a mediocre "can't wait to get there" trip instead. When booking a 2 week rental, the customer should be able to have the option the select from at least 2-3 vehicles in my mind, instead of just being dictated one rubbish car. "
" The vehicle we were given was not what we booked, we booked a Ford Edge or equivalent and were given a Mitsubishi Outlander which was a very substandard vehicle and very unpleasant to drive. Especially on the long journey we had planned for our holiday (San Francisco to San Diego), it was very uncomfortable in terms of seats, and overall car performance. It felt very underpowered, the car felt like it was about 20 years old when we had to go onto any freeway inclines and felt very unsafe. It also missed many features which would be expected as standard for a vehicle in this class such as parking sensors and SAT-Nav (this was clearly disabled as it had a GPS option disabled on the UI console and had the aerial installed). The rear passengers also were in discomfort as the rear seats were far too upright to endure a long distance journey which is expected in the US, so we had to make substantially more stops than planned. I use rental cars on a very regular base for work, but this was a very disappointing experience. It would have helped if we had been given an option of cars to choose from, but we were offered one vehicle, and no other option. Every time we have rented cars in the US previously, we have always been offered a choice of vehicles, but this was the first time we had to accept what was offered by the rental company. "

" I always find it useful if the vehicle which you have rented and paid for is waiting there for you when you arrive. We were told that ours had been given to somone else, which after an 11 hour flight from the UK and a half hour wait for the Advantage shuttle bus was exactly the last thing I wanted to hear. The car that eventually turned up was a return immediate turnaround which had 42k on the clock, had most definatly seen more than its fair share of action and was covered in what looked like dog hairs inside. I've done several US car rentals over the years and they have all been relatively trouble free affairs. That is of course until this time. I wont be renting from Advantage again thats for sure. "

" Taken to an Advantage depot somewhere in the industrial backstreets of San Francisco. Less than friendly reception staff who requested I sign an automated screen which claimed I had read and agreed to various documents which had not been shown to me prior to signing. I requested to see the documents referred to and this was reluctantly provided by the agent who was clearly annoyed at my request. Whilst reading the documents he made it plain that I could take it or leave it and go elsewhere if I was not happy. Having read the documents I decided to sign. He gave me the keys, took me to the only SUV available and walked off. The car was not very clean inside or out and was clearly well used with multiple scratches and dents etc which I duly recorded on the document provided. Faced with no alternative vehicle I decided to accept it to avoid the time consuming task of trying to arrange an alternative. Quality customer service is clearly not understood by staff at Advantage who even failed to give me the exit code for the security gate. Fortunately, despite my misgivings over the appearance of the car it did provide reliable service for the duration of my rental period. I paid to have it washed and valeted which also helped but the experience overall was far below the standard I have come to expect when arranging my previous rentals via Autoeurope. "

Would be good to be more specific about the roadside assistance included - we were unaware till collecting the car that this only covered specific mechanical failure and not flat tires etc and to cover the latter there was an additonal charge (which we decided not to take out). I would recommend Auto Europe to anyone travelling to the States. Totally hassle-free. "

Was a Mazda 2 with barely enough room for our luggage in the boot. Car is allocated to you when you arrive (whereas with Alamo you get to walk around and choose which car you want) "

" As usual with all companies in USA the rental counter staff are blunt, try to scare you into buying extra insurance and are deliberately misleading. When I refused the top up breakdown cover this guy even had the temerity to cross out the breakdown tel number on the front of the agreement (the actual number for all standard breakdown cover!!!)! I should have complained to a manager but that has never worked before. Always be confident, expect it & it won't ruin your trip just as you begin your holiday! Positive: Alamo did not sneak in any unmentioned charges for toll tags. The car was a good one - and no punctures or wobbly tyres, thankfully. I could select my own choice (2 available were damaged, so do have a good look around first!). "

" They charged us extra 100$ for a 4 wheel drive even though we rented a AWD Standard SUV. They even said its going to be 100$ per day extra without checking. I had to go back to the counter where they said the final total extra charge would be 100$ plus extra hidden charges. The total I had to pay was 192$ in addition to what i already paid to AutoEurope, basically doubling the whole cost. That being said booking through AutoEurope is still much cheaper. If i had gone through they would have definitely tripled the charge from their initial cost quote. "
