From first-class museums and historic sites to fine dining and fun-filled cruises in the Bay area, the city is currently enjoying a major tourism boom with more first-time arrivals than most other places in the USA. Home to the mighty Golden Gate Bridge, this vibrant city is also celebrated for its laid-back atmosphere and striking architecture, along with some of the liveliest neighbourhoods in the whole of America. At any time of the year, you'll find people from all over the world and all walks of life meandering through Chinatown's back alleys before relaxing with a freshly-caught fish and seafood platter in the famous Fisherman's Wharf area.

Touring California is easy and thrilling for travellers who choose to rent a car from San Francisco Airport. It's close to several of the most important tourists sights in North America, as well as the famous Pacific Coast Highway which begins north of the city. Once you have driven over the Golden Gate Bridge (make sure your passengers have their cameras ready!) you'll be in open countryside and from there you'll have access to many of the Northern California's top attractions. The state capital, Sacramento, lies less than 90 miles away, thus providing an easy day-trip excursion once all the San Francisco sightseeing is over. Another popular trip is to Napa Valley just 50 miles north of the city where some of the California's best wine estates are located. For peace and quiet, head for the Monterey Peninsula a couple of hours' drive from San Francisco where the atmosphere is very relaxed and the beaches are amazing. For the ultimate motoring adventure, why not take a long, leisurely drive down the Pacific Coast Highway for a long weekend in Los Angeles, the great movie capital of the world.

    Airport Information

First opened on the 7th of May 1927, San Francisco International Airport is a world air transportation hub and a major facility for people looking to explore the sunshine state of California. Its humble beginnings were greatly boosted by the forming of United Airlines in 1934, which quickly became the main airline at the airport with regular Douglas DC-3 services to Los Angeles and New York. A new passenger terminal opened in 1937, prompting TWA and Delta to begin operations there. Today the airport is one of the world's best with four runways, four terminals and an exhaustive range of on-site passenger services. In a typical year, the airport handles around half a million flights and 60 million passengers, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States of America.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has four large terminals (1, 2, 3 and International) and seven concourses (boarding areas A-G) with approximately 120 gates arranged alphabetically in a counter-clockwise pattern. Terminal 1 (for boarding area B), Terminal 2 (for boarding areas C and D) and Terminal 3 (for boarding areas E and F) handle the majority of domestic services, including most of the flights from Canada. The International Terminal (for boarding areas A-G) handles all of the airport's international flights plus a few domestic services.

    Airport Facilities

As one of the world's busiest and most innovative airports, SFO offers passengers an excellent selection of top-notch dining options, well-prepared displays of local aviation history (at the on-site SFO Museum) and the chance to sit outside whilst waiting for your flight in a landscaped environment. Parts of the airport look like your local high street with dozens of shops from which to choose, including newsagents, bookshops, fashion stores, the popular DFS Duty-free area and several high-branded boutiques such as Hermes, Gucci, Swarovski and Burberry. There's also a spa, yoga room and a popular children's play area.

How to get to and from San Francisco Airport

It couldn't be easier travelling from San Francisco International Airport to the city centre, and vice versa. The cheapest method of transport is the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system which takes about half an hour from the airport to Powell St in the city's downtown district. BART trains are quickly accessible from all four terminals by catching the airport's free AirTrain service to the Garage G/BART Station stop. Taxis, likewise, are in great abundance and can be hailed from the roadway centre isands on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level outside all four terminals. To reach other parts of San Francisco beyond the city centre, there are regular shuttles, minibuses and numerous privately-operated bus services that depart from the centre island transport zones also on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level.

    Parking Tips

There are plenty of suitable options for parking your car rental at San Francisco Airport. The two international car parks are situated next to the International Terminal, one on the north side of the airport and the other on the south side. International Terminal Garage A is the closest option for guests departing/arriving at the A-Gates, while International Terminal Garage G is the closest option for guests departing/arriving at the G-Gates. All four terminals can be easily accessed from these car parks: just take the pedestrian walkways to access the International Terminal or use the AirTrain service to reach the domestic terminals 1, 2 and 3 in just 10 minutes. There are AirTrain stations located at both of the International Parking Garages. The long-term car park area (the Domestic Garage) is located right in the middle of the airport and offers quick tunnel access to all the terminals.
