" I booked a Peugeot 2008 type vehicle and Thrifty set about offering me less. It started with a small MG and then we were offered a C3 Aircross. It was a nice little car but it was little and we had to compromise. I pointed out that it was significantly smaller than a 2008: there was one standing 2 cars away from it BUT I was told it was an automatic and I could only have it if I paid an extra £20 per day(!). I was also told it was the same size. It clearly isn't but the internal dimensions of many cars are similar and that was what was relied on. A call from a manager was promised but not forthcoming, and we had stayed an extra day in Montpellier area, so very bitter sweet. I wouldn't use Thrifty again and I believe they are part of Hertz. Sorry about the delay in sending this off but v busy when I got back and I then wondered whether worthwhile, but I feel you have to know how we felt. "

I knew their office would be shut when we returned the car. I was told if their reserved parking spaces were full, which they were, to use another car park. I was not given clear instructions on the location of the alternative car park. A hard copy map would have been useful. So I parked in the adjacent airport car park. I have subsequently been charged nearly £15 for this. I have appealed but don't hold out much hope. They could have done better on this. The blocked amount on my credit card was released yesterday so plus points for that. "

" Good morning, I had a reservation booked via yourselves on Friday 13th June to 17th June 2025 to hire a car on the French side at Geneva Airport.See Voucher number above The flight was delayed in departing Gatwick and as such delayed in arriving at Geneva . I reached the car hire location, Thrifty just before 21:00 only to find that it was closed. The other car hire companies were still open and confirmed that the person at Thrifty had left a lot earlier . Our original booking was for a car pick up at 20:00 but as we were in the plane waiting for a slot for take off I was unable to contact the hire company to advise of the later arrival but having hired in the French side previously did not think this would be an issue . I am aware the French side close earlier than the Swiss side but knew my later arrival time was still within the declared office times . There was no contact number at the desk and as the other companies were due due to close shortly I tried online to see if I could book an alternative as my wife and I needed a car that night but there was no availability. I then asked the other hire companies on the French side and only Avis had a vehicle available . The best price he could do was €262.00 . As we had no other option we booked and paid for this . I have attached a copy of my rental agreement with Avis long with evidence of the office working hours for the Thrifty/Hertz. Though I appreciate our flight was delayed we still arrived at the car hire desk at the time it was still due to be open and there was no one there . The desk was not maned during the office hours declared . The cost of our booking with yourselves was £94.18 so in total I have paid over £300 for 4 days car hire. The additional car hire of €262.00 was completely unnecessary if the desk had been maned during the declared office hours I would have had the vehicle ordered. In view of this inconvenience and lack of service from your provider I would like a refund of €262.00 euros. Regards Martha Cayley "

" My experiences with Auto Europe have generally been good and Sixt and National are my preferred companies - on this occasion neither appeared as an option. My major criticism is that AE has any dealings at all with Hertz or its satellite companies - they do you a gross miss-service and you should advise clients t o avoid them at all costs "
" Having had an appalling experience with Hertz on a previous occasion I was horrified to discover that Thrifty came under the Hertz umbrella. I was on a one day business visit to France and to lose two hours through totally inefficient processing at the counter - between 2 and 3 times longer than any of the other car hire companies was very inconvenient. The car irself was a bit scruffy with scratches of the paintwork which were not immediately apparent on the documantation and a fuel tank the was only 3/4 full - not shown on the outgoing documentation which suggested that it was full. I await the refunding of my deposit in expectation that it will be incorrect. Fortunately I took photos to confirm the above "

There was no need of it this time but I was unclear what would have happened in the event of a claim. In terms of having a suitable vehicle where and when I wanted it at a very fair price no complaint at all "

" We had to wait in a queue for an hour and forty minutes to get the car. There was one guy on the desk , dealing with a long queue of customers. He was ok but clearly the desk was massively understaffed for the number of customers arriving. When it was our turn there wasn't a car available and we had to wait another 20 minutes whilst one of the recently returned vehicles was quickly cleaned. Having landed at 10.15am we should have had plenty of time to pick up the car and get to a supermarket before the local half day closing. As it was, we didn't get the car until 1pm which left us with a mad dash to the nearest store before it closed at 1.30pm. Once we got the car to where we were staying, it started showing an overdue service reminder which came on each time we started the car. This was a bit irritating but the car itself was otherwise fine. Altogether it was not a very happy experience picking the car up, and was ultimately extremely stressful, hence the low score. "

" Within minutes of picking up the car a warning light came on which the following morning I discovered indicated a problem with the tyres. I went immediately to a garage where they were checked they all needed air. I was not able to reset the warning light. Five days later 28 August I go for petrol where the person points out that the nearside front tyre is flat. A mesh repair was carried out following the removal of a piece of wood. I tried without success to contact the emergency number. On 31 August the warning light came on again. I drove one hour directly to Bergerac airport not stopping to fill the car and after some difficulty the car was exchanged. I have now received an invoice from Hertz for £235.18. I spoke to one of your very helpful people about this on 13 September and the matter is being taken up with Hertz. I firmly believe that the tyre was faulty with a slow puncture before I took delivery and none of the tyres had sufficient air. "

My girlfriend had her driving licence and credit card so we asked to change the driver, they said they could not do it without authorisation from autoeurope who were closed. Called auto Europe the next day and they added my girlfriend as the driver, got a taxi back to the airport, to the terminal we were supposed to pick up from, there was a sign saying go to the furthest terminal. we were in the airport for a full half hour, either walking, waiting for a train or on the train before we arrived at the counter. We were then told we still could not get the car so had to get a taxi back. Wasted 3 hours of our trip, 200 euros in taxis and did not get the car. "

My girlfriend had her driving licence and credit card so we asked to change the driver, they said they could not do it without authorisation from autoeurope who were closed. Called auto Europe the next day and they added my girlfriend as the driver, got a taxi back to the airport, to the terminal we were supposed to pick up from, there was a sign saying go to the furthest terminal. we were in the airport for a full half hour, either walking, waiting for a train or on the train before we arrived at the counter. We were then told we still could not get the car so had to get a taxi back. Wasted 3 hours of our trip, 200 euros in taxis and did not get the car. "

Didn't like the leaflet explaining if the car wasn't returned clean (the level of cleanliness wasn't explained) we would be charged - I can't remember how much. When you are on holiday the last thing you want to be doing is stressing about this. We washed the car the night before as we didn't want to risk leaving it until airport as we had 3 1/2hr journey. As we arrived nice and early to airport we re washed and valeted the car - not what I call a relaxing end to your holiday! A leaflet explaining you expect no rubbish left in the car and no sand pits , stained seats - I would understand a charge but not for daily use dirt! "

Also had no response from the emergency number attached to the car keys. After several sent emails I finally had a response from Marjorie by phone late Sunday night. She was able to help get the car towed away Monday and get a taxi service booked for our flight back Monday evening and reimburse taxi fees and days lost without using a car. Then were it fitted mats in the car to allow any grass etc to be removed. I will try to claim the £60 back but have no confidence i will succeed. "

" There has been some very good and some very bad. First, I was impressed by the pick up experience, given that the staff waited until 01:00am to ensure we could pick up our vehicle due to a delayed aircraft. Now the bad part. The vehicle was not full (despite the gauge showing full). I did a roundtrip of 394km and refuel the vehicle after half of the trip at Super U pont du chateau . The receipt shows 17.10L. On the way back I refilled at Netto Pusignan. The receipt shows 8.86L. The gauge started to go down after approximately 150km. The staff when returning the vehicle was unhelpful and challenged the calculations on the basis of the average consumption for trip A (which wasn't reset for my trip). She claimed that it was OK since you are entitled to refuel within 30km which the calculations show that, beyond any reasonable doubt, this was not the case. She also claimed that receipt were checked when cars are returned without evidence. I had to go to catch my plane, there was no point in arguing. "

" On dropping off the vehicle, the assistant tried to charge me for some minor scratches on the wheels and body of the vehicle, none of which I had done. I provided photographic evidence of scratches on one wheel, of which Hertz had no record, so the assistant eventually agreed that I was not responsible for the other scratches on the wheels. The scratch on the bodywork was so faint it could hardly be seen. I had not taken a photograph of it, because I had not even noticed it when picking up the car. The vehicle had a number of scratches and dents when it was collected, only some of which were recorded by Hertz. I felt that the company was determined to charge me for something, even thought there was no damage to the car during my rental period. In the past, I have had similar problems with Hertz and I will not be using this company again. By contrast, Europcar and Rentscape do not engage in these petty arguments, so I will use these companies in future. "

" I have been charged with just over 125€ for 2 small chips in the windscreen on my recent car rental. According to the rental contract with Auto Europe the excess reimbursement cover includes glass. The car I got did have several scratches and did smell bad inside. " Firstly we were told we would receive an email with photos of existing damage on the car, however to date I've never had that email (and I've checked all inboxes). The main issue for us was that the tyre pressure warning light was on as soon as we left the airport. Therefore we returned straight away, having to queue all over again, to inform staff of the problem. The tyre was inflated and we were told there wouldn't be any more problems. We didn't drive many miles during the hire period, but had to inflate the same tyre twice when the warning light appeared again. There was obviously a problem with this tyre (probably a slow puncture) and we shouldn't have needed to keep topping up the air. On returning the car I informed the staff of this problem and their attitude was extremely dismissive, commenting that "it's a common problem". The staff member didn't even make a note of the issue until I said that it wasn't normal for the same tyre to constantly need inflating. Warning lights are there for a reason! The time waiting in a queue to collect and even drop off keys was ridiculously long and very uncomfortable as no air conditioning. Also the signage at the airport for the car hire return is extremely confusing. Whilst there is very small writing to indicate which barrier to use, the same barrier has 'NO ENTRY' signs on it. Isn't that a clear contradiction? As we were not given any guidance on how to access the rental return parking area, we ended up on the wrong car park as this seemed to be the only option. "

" When we arrived at Limoges airport we found Thrifty at the Hertz desk and only one lady was working. There was a queue of over 8 different people waiting for their cars from our flight. As we checked in the lady told us what our car was, and said, 'Oh I can't remember the colour', was dismissive and rude. We had requested a car seat for our four month old baby in which she threw over the counter. When then trying to install the car seat, it was actually broken. The handle did not move and there was no support or inserts. We went back to ask for another and tell her and her response was, 'Oh I don't use these'. This is completely unprofessional and even if she had not personally used them, the company needs to ensure that the carseats are safe, let alone legal, if they are offering them to be hired out. She gave us her other 'option', and this again was broken and in even worse condition. Luckily, a lovely lady who worked at Enterprise over heard all of this and offered us her carseat. On returning of the vehicle and car seat, the same lady was working and we reiterated again about ensuring the carseats were safe/usable and she just brushed the comment off and said, 'I don't know really'. We found the whole personal experience with Thrifty highly infuriating, rude, dismissive and unprofessional. The car itself was in good condition but purely because of the service and experience we received, we would not book again. I would like this complaint to be looked into and feedback provided, as as you can see we are highly dissatisfied. "

I'm renting cars a lot, in many different continents and countries but I've never had such a discouraging experience. I knew I wanted to extend after two days (which is three days before the end of the rental) and called the office tens of times during the rest of my rental but they didn't answer. I called their France office and other branches but everybody told me the only branch that can extend the one I took the car from. I had to drive 5 hours to the branch in order to extend my rental in two days. And then drive back 4 hours. Such a waste of energy, money and stress. " Main feedback relating to the condition of the vehicle when we collected it. The exterior bodywork and windows were dirty, when I expected that it would be clean. The interior was OK, but there was a large stain on the rear seat that should have been cleaned. Finally, only after I had completed the paperwork that the rental agent told me that there was pre-exisiting minor damage to the vehicle and that I should review the photos that would be emailed after I had signed the contract. I was also told that, if there was any further marks/damage to the vehicle that I noticed after I had viewed the car in the car park (5 mins walk away) then I should take pictures and report those. This was pretty unsatisfactory, as when I did notice 2 paint chips that were not documented, there was no way of registering those as 1) the damage report email that I received, was "send only". 2) the Terminal 1 rental counter had closed by the time I reached the car and other counter in Terminal 2 (that was still open) was a long walk. As such, I had no choice but to take photos of the two paint chips, as a reference, and take the car "as is". Thankfully, when I returned the car at the end of the rental, I reviewed the additional damages with the agent at Car Rental Return, they indicated that these were not significant enough to be documented and that there was no issue and all was fine. In summary, check-in and airport staff were very good, as was the quality of the car that we rented (at a good price too). My only complaint is that I should have been advised earlier in the rental process, that (due to high demand etc) the car would not have been fully cleaned and the photos of the pre-existing damage made available before and not after the rental contract was signed. "

I rang bordeaux airport office where we collected the car, he said 'its not my problem, once the car breaks down there is nothing we can do, it's the breakdown company's problem'. I said, they towed it away and said you would give me a replacement! He said, 'sorry, I can't do that, we have no cars available'. and that was it. " My only real concern was when Ryanair altered the time of my flight weeks after I'd booked the car hire. I went onto the AE website to amend the booking but it wouldn't let me. So I rang the helpdesk, who said they couldn't do it either because "there were no more cars available". This didn't make a lot of sense because I had already booked a car. All I wanted to do was move the collection and return times by 2.5 hours. I was told that I would have to re-hire a car at the current rates, which would no doubt have been more expensive than an earlier booking. In any case, there were no longer any cars available! In the end I retained the original booking and collected the car late. But I had to return it at the original time which meant a very long wait before my flight. Not impressed - why couldn't I just amend the booking? "

" I rented a car on 30th Sept and received my receipt. Firstly, when I picked up the car, I had just driven out of the car park then saw that the fuel tank was only 3/4 full. I had been instructed to return the car with a full tank, so I took a photo of the fuel gauge and emailed it straight away to BZE50@hertz.com. I had no reply from them since then. I sent Hertz the photo to prove that it was taken just after the car was picked up, not hours after, so it's not possible that I used up a 1/4 tank of fuel before taking the photo. In the email I said I would not return with the tank full, but I did in the end return it full as I didn't want to be charged extra for fuel, then I planned to complain about the issue. When returning the car there was no-one at the office at Bezier airport to talk to, even though we arrived within the opening hours shown on the door (11am on 3rd Oct). I've asked Hertz to refund for the quarter-tank of fuel that we put it. It's completely wrong for them to rent the car with a 3/4 full tank then expect it to be returned full. Secondly, on the receipt, I was charged 33.42 euros plus tax for fuel (carburant) even though the vehicle was returned with a full tank. I've also asked them to refund this amount. The rental almost failed as she said the credit card I showed was not the same one I made the booking on, and that she couldn't let me have the car unless I could produce the same card. The card she said I booked on had the same last 2 digits as the one I produced, but all else was different. I don't have a Visa card with the same numbers she had on her system. Eventually, she said she would make an 'exception' for me, although it was against the rules, and change the number of the card on the booking to reflect the one that I produced. I also had to pay an extra 30 euro to take the car into Italy -just over the border. She then said she was giving me a great upgrade to include Sat Nav at no extra cost. On the voucher you also indicated that this would be covered by Thrifty because Auto Europe is not an insurance company. However, when I arrived, Thrifty made me sign the contract that stated I did not have this insurance. When I pointed this out they said that if something happened I should claim back the excess with Auto Europe. " When we collected the car we were told that we could either bring the car back full of fuel or not. If the tank was only partly full or empty we would be charged 70 euros. We were also told that the petrol station at the air port was closing so we would have to fill the tank prior to return in a neighbouring town. We filled the tank before returning the car - we were then charged the 70 euros for fuel by the company which we are disputing, also the petrol station at the airport was open so we wasted time driving 7 kilometers to find a petrol station when we did not need to (the petrol station was very difficult to find and added about 30 minutes to the time we had to check in). The condition of the car when collected was not accurately as told to us. We were told the car was perfect (although apparently was noted on documentation that the rental company had but not on our documents that there is a dent on the drivers door). We collected when dark and were told to examine the car before 10 am the next morning which we did and noted the dent. We took pictures but when we returned the car we were told that they knew about the dent - why put us to that inconvenience when it was totally unnecessary? We have had problems with this company when renting a car in France before (they paid a parking ticket adding an exhorbitent service charge on top which we successfully disputed). Basically, the impression of the French part of this company is that they try to charge additional fees (in this instance for petrol) in the hope that the customer will not notice so that the profits for the company can be increased. We are now in the position of having to spend time disputing the charge for petrol when the car was returned with a full tank which means time and effort on our part whilst the company has use of the money in the interim. If the company does that on (say) 100 rentals per month the increased income is in the region of 700 euros per month, multiply that by the number of outlets an you have a substantial amount on money that is charged incorrectly and in most cases probably not noticed. The whole situation is appalling. "

I am familiar with all the ways that extra charges are made and have found Auto Europe by far the best, even sorting out problems when the actual car rental companies prove troublesome. My experience with the Auto Europe element of my rental was again first rate. Regarding the experience with Thrifty (Hertz) I have NEVER encountered the same problem that I encountered at the Hertz desk in Montpelier, France where the staff refused to even commence processing my details until the precise time on the collection Voucher was reached - there were no other customers waiting at all, they simply refused to speak to us. Whenever this has happened in the past, companies (including Hertz) have simply let me have the car slightly early. Even if there were insurance issues, they could have processed the paperwork so that we were ready for the allocated time. Instead, one of the staff went home and the other went outside for a cigarette! Very poor customer service. Thrifty or other Hertz companies will now be bottom of my choice list. "

The oil level was only 25/30% ....so I was always a bit worried if there was enough. We had some at our house but it was the wrong grade and I was reluctant to add it. It's an issues which needs looking at and addressing , I know for the future to take a million photos of the car and flag up even the smallest scratch before I leave the airport to avoid this happening again - would be we use thrifty / hertz again - not in Toulouse anyway "

" Quite dissapointed in that I booked a car for 2 days starting at 10am on the 10th Oct. My flight was cancelled by Easy jet, so got a new flight at 5pm. Car had to be cancelled, and I had to pay for it, as Thrifty would not keep the car for me until that evening. Then had to book and pay for another car. this had to be done by telephone with Auto Europe. When I got to the desk, I was given the car I had booked in the morning, with the times crossed out and changed to the new time, therefore they are capable of holding the car. To compound matters, the AutoEurope representative stated a time of 5pm pick up, despite the flight not arriving at Geneva until 7.30 pm, and the representative asking me what the flight number was. this meant that I had once again passed the 2 hour limit for pick up..!! Fortunately the Thrifty desk representative did not enforce this and make me book yet another car. So all in all not a great experience, as your marketing people like to call it. "

" The car received was badly scratched and dented in various places, but otherwise clean and tidy and a very reliable vehicle. I made sure I took a lot of photos of the car we were given. On our return to the airport, we had 3/4 full tank of petrol, which we intended to fill up at a service station close the airport. Unfortunately, there was no service station anywhere near the airport and as we were running late for our flight, we returned the car. We were charged for filling the car at 60+euros, which we challenged as the car was not empty. We were told this was policy and the money was automatically charged to my credit card. I feel that this is an excessive charged as the car was 3/4 full of fuel which the technician confirmed on checking the returned car. "

" I'm emailing in disappointed of the hire service in picking up my car on Thursday 6 September. I hired through Thrifty booked from autoeurope. The flight from London to Bordeaux took 1hr 20mins but when arriving at the car hire Thirty was closed and we were diverted to Hertz. At Hertz there was only two people on the desk with no urgency to clear the queue. There was two of us with a baby and we delayed our pick up of the hire car by over 2hrs. I find this unacceptable that our family needs to wait longer than our flight. Look forward to your reply. Peter "

Horrible piece of French engineering - could feel gearstick move when accelerating and decelerating - and car had numerous dents, scratches and scrapes (not all were marked on pickup slip, but I was careful to take timed photos before driving away). Pickup was confusing as one very nice lady appeared to be covering all the rental desks at Mulhouse. I thought I was renting through Thrifty but car was from Hertz! Maybe that's just the way it works? At drop off, there was a note on the Hertz desk saying the assistant would return in a short while. " On picking up the car we were told that the full fuel tank had been billed to us, at a cost of €79, and that therefore we were advised to return the car with as little fuel as possible. When we returned it we were told that this was not the case and we had to fill the tank otherwise we would now be billed the €79. Fortunately there was plenty of time to do this, but it was a little distressing to think that we might have been overcharged. It was also apparent that several other people returning their cars had been told the same thing. Evidently there is a staff training issue here. The car had a damaged rear quarter, which was unsightly, but it was otherwise fine. "

" I booked a 7 seater with room for 7 suitcases. The voucher stated ford Galaxy or similar. My party of 6 were unable to physically get into the first car I was given, let alone any luggage. The second one was a very uncomfortable squeeze with pull up seats in the boot. No leg room, and no luggage room. If there had been a 7th person in my party we would not have all managed to get in. The car was an x-trail Nissan. I had to pay for a taxi to take the luggage at a cost of 70 Euros each way. The car simply was not as described. " The lady at the checkout was bordering on the rude. The speed limits on some roads in France had just been changed and the sat-nav information had not been altered to the new speed. We were not informed of this and were only told about it by a resident travelling in our car. When we tried to look it up on the internet it was very hard to get any information. We could have easily been penalised for speeding. On our return, having been given the wrong address on the paperwork, we suggested to the young man that they may want to warn the next customer we were dismissed, again in an almost rude way. I would suggest that you employ staff who actually like dealing with people. We would like just basic courteousy and helpfulness. "

" During the hire period the vehicle had a puncture. We were able to swap the wheel with the spare tyre but had a lot of difficulty contacting Thrifty/Hertz breakdown service using a UK mobile phone. I owned a property in France for 15 years and am familier with the French phone system and have never had a problem. I eventually contacted a friend who lives in France to ring the number on her house phone, she was told someone would ring her back but they never did. My concern was that without a spare tyre, if we were to sustain another puncture, however unlikely, we could be stuck on the side of a motorway and eventually miss our flight. Staff at the Thrifty/Hertz agency also needs to be trained on your booking process, so they can correctly inform and advise your clients on the status of their requests when something goes wrong. We'd never have agreed to proceed at the Hertz rate if we'd known i) that the original reservation was incomplete and ii) the original rate would not be honored. "

He couldn't explain why but offered us another car from Hertz, which he said would cost less since it was a smaller size. As it turns out, the rate was more than twice the rate we'd found online (523.55 euros vs. 272.13 pounds). I pointed out the difference right away, but he told me he'd reach out to his manager, show him our initial reservation and they'd get back to us with an adjusted rate. We heard nothing for a week and when I called, I was told by his manager that the original reservation was "on request" for reasons he couldn't explain, but therefore not complete. They would not agree to honor the original rate, as it was an "online offer". If the agency banner says Hertz/Thrifty, the least you'd expect is for the staff to be i) knowledgeable about both services and ii) aware of what commercial gestures they are able to extend to their clients. Don't make any false promises and follow up on your commitments. "

" we paid for a 7 seater ford galaxy or eqivelent as we was traveling with 4 adults and 2 children under 3 plus 6 suit cases plus hand luggage and a pram. When we got to carcasonne we was told we was getting a renault scenic which was only a 5 seater plus 2 in the boot with no room for the cases or pram. plus it would mean a child under 3 would have to sit in the boot seat alone as there wasnt enough leg room for a adult. The very rude and very unhelpful manager said the picture on my autoeurope recipt was wrong and we shouldnt of had a ford galaxy or equivelant but my point was as well as the picture it said ford galaxy 7 seater or eqivellent in writing so it didnt matter if the picture was wrong. after arguing for over a hour and phone calls to autocar europe the only thing he could offer us was to pay extra for a mini van and try to complain and get a refund when we got home. This wasnt an option for us as we only had enough money for our holiday and it wasnt our mistake we had paid for a 7 seater ford galaxy or equivellent and thats what we wanted. The manager was trying to say that your website had the Ford Galaxy as a different classification to the Thirfty classification they had the scenic in group G and the ford galaxy in group H. After another 20 mins or so we asked him to phone his manager as the kids was sat outside in the baking sun for over a hour and 20 mins getting restless tired and hungry and in need of a drink. his manager then said to give us what we paid for and give us the mini van. which was what we had paid for. This then had a knock on effect for the start of the holiday as when we finaly got to Vias the supermarket was closed and we couldnt get food etc until the next day. i would like someone to contact me with a follow up about this dissapointing and easily avoidable experiance. And some sort of compensation/refund to help put this unplesent event behind us. "

" Not entirely satisfied with my experience, frontline staff were fine picking up the car but dropping off it was a difficult experience. I was requiring a receipt to make sure my deposit for the vehicle (820 Euro) would not come off my credit card as the pick up man signed off my vehicle (after return). No one could contact the right person for me even after 30 minutes, and as to date I have not received any kind of receipt (which was promised to me by the drop off man) Additionally The car that I requested and paid for (Ford Galaxy) was not available therefore the vehicle I received was a Ford C-Max. This car though very good indeed was far too small for 5 people plus luggage - disappointed Thrifty I'm sad to say "
