In the capital of Germany, the Christmas spirit is all around and the local markets offer something for everyone. The Gendarmenmarkt, for example, has a unique atmosphere and you can enjoy the market until the end of December. You can find an equally cozy atmosphere at the Christmas market at Alexanderplatz or in some of the many other Christmas markets Berlin offers. In fact, almost every district of the city offers its own market.
Düsseldorf is known for being a shopping paradise, but during the weeks before Christmas, the city has a special vibe to it. Düsseldorf has many different Christmas markets, with the Market Square and Heinrich-Heine-Platz being the most popular for a delicious cup of glühwein, Christmas treats and decorations. On the square in front of the Cologne Cathedral you can attend the popular and very large Cologne Christmas Market until the 23rd of December, while the rest of the city also offers many cozy Christmas markets, such as the Alter Markt and Neumarkt.
NurembergThe largest Christmas market in Germany takes place every year in Nuremberg. The Nurnberger Christkindlmarkt lasts until the 24th of December and in the old center of the city, you will find hundreds of stalls, where you can buy handmade Christmas decorations and delicious treats and gingerbread cookies.
If you are heading to the Southern part of Germany, Bavaria, be sure to visit Munich and all its Christmas markets during the Advent season. Visit, for example, the Christmas market on Marienplatz, which is located directly in front of the beautiful town hall. You can also visit the Winter Tollwood, which is a large Christmas market held on the grounds of Oktoberfest. This market offers typical German Christmas treats and is visited by tourists as well as locals.
