    Road Trips and Mixtapes

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a dauntless traveller in possession of a road-worthy vehicle and a love for the open road, must be in want of a matching soundtrack. No self-respecting road trip is complete without a mixtape to liven up the mood and provide the background for both out of tune singing and the much needed mockery of your travelling companions' musical tastes. After all, 'for what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?' ;)

The first rule of a good mixtape (or you know, mix CD, because analog is so last century) is that it's not meant to be good. You are not trying to impress anyone. Mixtapes are the perfect opportunity for cheesy tunes, timeless classics, and guilty pleasures. Here are some suggestions ;)

    Highway to Hell, ACDC

There's no beating the classics. Highway to Hell is a necessity of any road trip soundtrack. However, don't get too carried away and start taking the words too literally... There will most definitely be stop signs and speed limits, and if you ignore either, some nice agents of the law will slow you down.

    500 Miles, The Proclaimers

There is not a soul alive who cannot sing along to 500 Miles (or at least the chorus, which as everyone knows is the only part that truly counts when it comes to claiming knowledge of a song). And that's the Golden Rule when choosing tracks for your epic compilation of epicness: you need songs you can sing along to. And preferably songs you can sing along to in booming, sonorous voices.

    Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen

The corollary to the Golden Rule is 'make it obvious'. You might think that one Queen song might do as well as another for a road trip soundtrack, but you'd be wrong. No ifs and buts about it. No 'oh but their early stuff', nor 'but Innuendo and the Prophet Song are undeniably superior songs'. No. You're going for the obvious punchline here. And that is, without a doubt, Bohemian Rhapsody. (One could, I suppose, make a case for Crazy Little Thing Called Love, but then you'd miss the opportunity to dramatize the awesome lyrics of BR).

    Anything by Disney Ever

There are no wrong choices when it comes to Disney and no mixtape is ever complete without at least one song from this animation monster. So indulge your inner child and pick something. Anything. Really. There are no wrong choices here.

    Born to be Wild, Steppenwolf

Self explanatory. Whether you're doing a US road trip (everyone knows America is the mother and father of road trips), driving through a German autobahn or crossing the Australian Outback, no song will get you started quite like this one. 'Get your motor runnin'/ Head out on the highway / Lookin' for adventure / And whatever comes our way'. Happy travels ;)
