    Safari in South Africa

The Western society's adventure stories have often referred to the word 'safari' as reckless game hunting on the Dark Continent. Partially due to the devastating consequences of such a hunting practice, a new paradigm for exploring the African continent has emerged and restored the real meaning of the word 'safari'.

Along with the increased awareness of sustainability and re-questioning the dubious morality of hunting for pleasure, safari has come to mean searching for animals to photograph and not to kill them. This change is not complete yet but the trend is, luckily, gaining more popularity and the old Swahili word 'safari' is getting closer to its original meaning - a long journey.

A safari is definitely a challenging journey in a number of ways, and, therefore, it requires thorough and cautious preparation. Meeting wild animals face to face and contact with other cultures, customs and traditions so radically different from ours can be amazing but also dangerous.

While looking for safari packages, you will most certainly be surprised by the vast range starting from the luxurious ones in private nature reserves and five-star hotels all the way to the more adventurous ones, with the bush at your finger tips and nothing else between you and the starry skies. The latter have won our hearts.

To make it work and to stay on the safe side, you will need good equipment and suitable clothes in particular. Freedom of choice on a safari includes careful itinerary planning, possibly with an expert. As the roads in South Africa can get rough at times, it is highly recommended to hire a reliable and robust vehicle, such as a powerful 4x4. The speed on safari is of secondary importance.

South Africa's exceptional nature, well preserved in more than twenty national parks and wildlife reserves, is truly incomparable. Some of them are managed in cooperation with the neighbouring countries (Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe). The Kruger National Park, for example, is vast, quite famous and chosen by many as the most impressive one. Plan your visit carefully and enquire what is allowed and what permits you may need to obtain from the authorities before your safari trip.

With a safari trip in South Africa being the highlight of your holiday, it is admittedly easy to forget about other places on the Dark Continent. It would be a shame, though, not to include vibrant Johannesburg or the culture-packed Cape Town in your itinerary.

Enjoy the dazzling landscapes of South Africa, its precious wildlife and winding coastline with a campervan or 4x4 hire from Auto Europe, your partner on this spectacular journey!
