" I've used Auto Europe a lot over the years. This is my second time of choosing Avis - both were poor experiences. The first time I was stung for a 50 euro post hire 'cleaning charge': I think I left a newspaper and a water bottle in the car. The second time - see above. Drop off in Geneva was smooth, but could be far better signposted. "
" When I hired the car online there was no question asked about which countries I would drive in. At the counter the Avis rep asked me where I would travel. I replied France - and he advised that there was then an additional 12chf to pay, per day. I asked him repeatedly why this new fee was being introduced into the hire contract, and what the charge covered. Cue, 2 minutes of babble and half finished sentences that led nowhere. Eventually, the rep confirmed I didn't need to pay this additional charge but he had to warn me I was responsible for the consequences. I asked what kind of consequences - cue, more of the same babble. At this point I decided this was simply a scam and declined to pay the charge. The keys were handed over and I went on my way. "

" Due to a family bereavement we nearly did not come on our arranged trip. We planned travelling with friends and I asked if I could transfer the car booking to them as we didnt know if we would be too upset to travel. Well I may as well have asked for the moon as you have created a system which is so rigid that any change in circumstances are maximised by autoeurope. Even tragic ones that we were facing because you wanted to create a new booking rather than transfer an existing. It is simply a rule created to penalise people who have to alter their bookings. As for Avis, the car as above was larger than average and as a consequence was scratched on every corner and had an enormous dent in the side. I was then accused of creating this when I dropped it off. I was stared at intently by Avis staff so they could see if my eyes were wavering at the facts I was explaining. All very disconcerting. "
" The car I picked up was an upgrade large 7 seater. But it was battered. A long list of scratches were attached but there was a significant dent and when I returned the car the staff said that the handover description did not match the damage. I showed the picture I took on the day I picked it up in clear light as Geneva Car Park is very dark. But they said the damage happened between pick up and my picture. Eventually senior staff turned up and recognised the battered car and waved us off. But to be accused of damage when it was Avis' poor description and quality of vehicle wasn't a good experience at all. "

There was also a hard sell for snow chains despite not being needed as the car had snow tyres. I was told they were needed legally. I took them but complained on return and got refund of snow chains. " when collecting car we asked about vehicle functions such as auto gear box and operation of sat nav we weren't offered any help with this as handover guy didn't seem to know how sat nav worked. It was like here are the keys get on with it. Sat nav was set up to avoid motorways so took us the long way around lake Geneva taking over 3 hours had we gone via motorway it would have taken just over an hour. We could work out how to reset this ! "

" I have rented with yourselves several times in the past and have always been very happy with the service. I have also used Avis through yourselves and not had problems before. However, their underhand methods on this occasion will mean that I would not recommend them to anyone else or use them myself again. "
" On collecting the car at Zurich Airport, the gentleman on the Avis desk asked if I wanted any extra insurance. I made it very clear that I had already taken out extra insurance and did not want anything else. However, when looking at the paperwork later on, I noticed that he had added roadside breakdown cover! When I returned the car at the end of the holiday, I had to go back to the Avis desk and wait in a long queue to be seen. I explained to the lady that it was added without my consent but she said that I had signed for it. It was only the fact that I was persistent that, on checking with another member of staff, she agreed to cancel the charge. She did say that I should have checked the agreement when I picked up the car before I left - which I certainly will do in the future. However, I did point out to her that extra costs should not be added when a customer clearly expresses that they do not wish anything else. It is an underhand method of bumping up the cost. "

The full rental cost was paid on the date of booking and I received confirmation of this with a list of what was included in the rental cost. When I collected the car no mention was made of any additional costs outstanding and yet I now find that my husband has been charged an additional 361.04 Swiss Francs for additional items that are clearly listed on the initial agreement as included in the rental fee paid in July. " Car provided was zafira which is 20% smaller than the sharan we ordered. Avis claimed of course that they are same category! Five adults with skiis had a very uncomfortable journey with heavy baggage on laps. At Geneva the transfer to the car park is very unpleasant--- crowded buses with no assistance loading skiis into the very high rack. I see no reason why CHF14 per day should be charged for 2nd driver. Because only one person is driving this car at any one time. It adds no extra risk to the rental company. "
