I had to go through the whole hassel of phoning and rasing a formal query online before being refunded the total amount... Pure fraudulent behaviour by First Car and I would therefore not recommend them to anyone! Would strongly advise against the use of their service as I'm not endorsing dishonest businesses no matter how good the price might be I would suggest avoiding First Car hire. "

" The only issue was that the batteries in the key fob ran flat during our rental. This meant that we returned the car without refuelling as the display said that the engine wouldn't restart if we stopped to fuel up. I did argue that we shouldn't pay the refuelling charge (but would obviously pay for the fuel used). This was less than £2, so not a big deal for us but equally, not a big deal for them to insist on charging! "

" We arrived into Cape Town Airport aroung 4.45pm. Collecting the car was a long walk from the terminal but once there was relatively quick. Despite being told that we would find a staff member to review the car with us there was no one at the car pickup area. We were told it was the weekend and why should staff inspect the car with us. We inspected the car ourselves. The car provided was ok, with small ares of damage as expected on a car with +38000km registered. Over the rental the ignition key battery became flat and would no longer lock or unlock the car. The return was quick but we were not given any document confirming tank level or condition. I had to pay a deposit of ZAR5250 on pickup and was told this would be refunded on the cars return. I was shocked to see on invoice emailed to me on my return to the UK that I had been charged ZAR2250 for Young Drivers insurance surcharge. I am 64 and have held a drivers licence since I was 16 and was the only driver of the vehicle. I used the online forms to query this charge however Firts Car did not refund and failed to answer my query. I had to telephone them in South Africa and the handler agreed that this was incorrect and said i would be refunded the amount. I wait to see if this occurs. "

Further, the excess quoted looks quite different to those agrees with Auto Europe which was ZAR8000 whilst First Car made me sign an excess of ZAR12000, again that was quite disappointing. " The first car I was given overheated just as I left the airport and was joining the motorway so had to return and exchange it which was very time consuming because of the large queues at First. The second car, a Suzuki celerio , was a very poor car. It had no remote locking and not even central locking which is a real safety and security issue in S.Africa. I then got a chip in the bottom, middle of the windscreen when a stone or something hit it so as I didnt like that car I returned and exchanged it again. I was charged for a whole new windscreen without them even advising me. The first thing I knew was when my bank queried the charge. So I then ended up with a third car which was extremely old and not what I would expect from a hire company. When I returned it there was nobody around at all to accept it so I had to wait till somebody came. The whole experience was way below what I would expect from a car hire and it cost me both time and money each time I had to return to the airport. I most definitely will NOT be hiring with First again! "

The GPS we were given did not work, which when you are driving in city you don't know was a nightmare. I thought the car was underpowered and didn't change gears easily. On returning the car I complained about the GPS and the charge was refunded, this also required the supervisor and took an age. Altogether not a great experience unfortunately. "

" Having been told when I collected the car that no charge would be made on my credit card for the deposit, I found that it was taken out of my account and I am now waiting for it to be returned.no doubt I will lose out on the exchange rate. ( I had already paid for the rental in full through Auto Europe) I returned the car having filled it at the filling station a few hundred yards from the car rental returns. I was surprised to receive an invoice for R 53 which was for fuel - R20 of this for a service charge for the privilege of being charged for 2,2 litres of fuel. Having filled the car to the brim there is no way another 2 litres would have fitted in the tank. I know the amount charged may seem insignificant but I object on principle since 5ere is no way I can guarantee that the car was completely full to overflowing when I originally collected it. So, from being very happy with all aspects of the admin of the car hire, and having used you in the past and been very happy with the service I have received I am left feeling a little disappointed. " I booked a Ford Focus rated as an intermediate car but received a polo sedan which is an economy car. The assistant said that they had stopped offering the focus and if I didn't like the alternative I should phone their head office. I could have rented the polo sedan at half the price elsewhere. I filled up at the BP airport garage on my return and Their invoice which I received 2 days later charged me 45 rand for petrol. They took a deposit of 3000 rand straight away on the first day of hire and now 5 days after the hire have not returned it. Other companies take a card authorisation for the deposit just in case any charges become due later. "

We inspected the car after being told there was one mark on it. The rental was fine until we returned the vehicle and a scrape was shown to us under the front of the car which was visible if you laid down so we never saw it on inspection. The car had no central locking which is not good in S.Africa in case you need to leave somewhere you feel unsafe in a hurry. We had an upgrade to an AMG, nice but as we were leaving the airport "Tire Low Pressure" came on and we had to return. 2. Second car was a CLA 200, we progressed further. " I booked Nissan Almera with Auto Europe (or similar...). Well, I got the "similar", i. e. Suzuki Baleno. Thre's nothing wrong with that type of car but it is smaller than Nissan Almera! And i met several other travelers that had Nissan Almera from First Car... Secondly: I had to pay (= mandatory order) of ZAR3000 - ok. I've now received a refund of ZAR2330.68. What was the amount of ZAR669.32 used for?? Was it for toll on the N 2?? (went through that 3 times). Or was it also for petrol?? If that's the case, I would be very unhappy, as there was a note in large and colourful note hanging from the rear mirror saying "return vehicle empty"!!! Can you please explain that!!! Furthermore, our Suzuki Baleno had some sticky tape applied to little side spaces (for coins or small objects) - that doesn't really make a very good impression "

" When I made the booking (6 months prior to travel) i requested an infant seat and a toddler car seat. Upon arrival at Cape Town International we were told that this was subject to availability and that no infant seat was available. This was the case for another couple just ahead of us in the queue. I find this entirely unsatisfactory and poor service. It is illegal to travel with babies out of car seats and when you travel across the world, you are at the mercy of the car hire company to assist. When making such a booking so far in advance, I would expect arrangements to be made to provide the required equipment. Instead the staff at the desk could offer no help or solution and in the end we had to purchase a car seat over there. This really is unacceptable. "

" When I arrived at the Hetz desk at CT airport, the representative tried to fob me off with a VW Polo. I complained I had specifically requested a Toyota Corolla. So after some time he found me one which was not running especially well, but well enough . After 3-4 days I was contacted by Hertz CT who asked me by email if the car had been serviced and what the mileage was . I was amazed that they had let out a car which they had no idea whether it had been serviced and no record of the mileage. I was astonished and highly concerned about the safe running of the car. Then on return they had the gall to charge me for some unseen damage. I have used Hetz for years and have usually been satisfied . This one was an absolute shocker. I will take my complaint further.If the tyre was a problem they should have been specific in their invoicing , and if there was concern about the servicing of this vehicle then I would ask for the money they have taken without my consent paid back onto my card with immediate effect. "

I had porters carrying my and my wife's luggage luggage, so had walked away then heard the rep calling after m e. So I hurried back , as the porters walked on with my luggage , for him to say there appeared to be some light damage to one of the tyres.I couldn't see what he was talking about and was given the view that it was probably oK . Then he asked me to initial the form , I asked what for and he said simply to acknowledge that he had brought potential tyre damage to my attention . Under duress I signed , and went off to chase my luggage. I have now received a notice on their final invoice of R2,681.01 for "Damage". This I disgraceful behaviour to take from my credit card without any consultation, or even breakdown of what this damage refers to! I feel totally ripped of. this is a very bad feeling! "

Fast, efficient and actually had the car ready for us when we arrived - Note to others - hertz did not and we waited half an hour after they had processed us. First Car also had a computer screen that we could see and fill in at the same time as the counter staff. Also was able to drop the car off without filling up and they did it for us without charging anything extra - just for the petrol - that's customer service I'd use them every time "

I still had to pay as I had no proof. I then picked up the second car and took loads of photos of the car. I returned the car with no issues and now they have claimed that I damaged the car even after I ensured that every dent and scratch had been logged on the form. " At CPT airport the collection was a nightmare - Hertz said car not ready and it would be 20mins. I reminded them I wanted a Corolla Quest (as boot size is known to hold all our golf equipment); after 50mins they tried to fob us off with a Golf. After 75 mins they produced a Quest which I tried to drive around the car park to where our cases were - the brake pads were gauging out the brake discs; After 90mins we got a Quest that drove ok but LHS indicator was fast ticking (indicates a bulb gone). Drove 500km to George only to find not a bulb gone but the whole rear offside light cluster was inoperative and loose connection could not be found. Took car to Hertz George Airport - within 3mins Leroy Brown had swapped out the paperwork and given us a Corolla Quest unfortunately which was an auto (3 gears so very high revving). During the 55days we found rear n/s door did not work with central locking. Car returned to CPT with petrol tank totally filled 15km away and Hertz charged me R113. "

They ok so you are arriving, have the flight number and yet there were at least 4 groups whose booked cars were not available. I had fully comprehensive insurance, and as such wasn't worried about the condition of the car (although I had not done anything at all to damage the car). I told him that of course I had, and had drive about 8kms along a motorway to get to the airport. I even showed him my fuel receipt, which he took. It took about 200 rand to fill up car from less than one quarter full to full during my rental. There was one Square ( out of 8 used) between my last fill and return to first car rental, so i rather doubt that what they charged is actually correct, but as they don't provide any proof but just deduct an amount i doubt one can ever check. I prefer leaving the car full, full at the airport garage but they requested not to do that. I realise it isn't much money, but it is the Principle that counts. "

They said that because no forms required, it was confirmed that there was no problem with the car. I filled the car up at the airport petrol station...this also happened with my previous 1st car rental and also last month with a colleague. I supplied a fuel receipt however 1st just take money without providing any evidence that they put fuel in the car. Having worked previously as a car rental manager i believe this to be a scam by the branch in Cape Town. Also, instead of returning my R3000 deposit, 1st took a further R3000 rand which they denied even after the bank confirmed that the additional amount had been taken. I will not use 1st again or recommend to anyone. They give a bad name to other car rental companies who act fairly to customers. I suggest auto Europe look into this before recommending 1st to customers. "

" We waited 15 minutes as car not ready - a puncture apparently. We had the hub cap covers stolen at the V+A car park. we had no warning of this and the hub caps were not secured to prevent theft. I was asked to sign 5 times and incurred extra charges I did not want - nothing was explained. We have been charged for fuel when the tank was filled at the airport - this is a scam we can do nothing about but warn others. We have been charged a ridiculous amount for the plastic hub caps - another way it seems to make money as the replacement costs will be a fraction of what we have been charged. Before this we took a car from you at Joburg and left it at Skukuza airport. We were correctly charged for a one way drop off and road tolls - no scams there. Very disappointed in this service and will warn others as best I can. Shame on you for treating tourists so badly. "

" All was ok, no real complaints, except that the car was extremely boring to drive. There was nothing inspiring at all about the design, it was very boring also. Road handling was very poor, and the visibility awareness around the car was extremely bad, which then gave me a sense of extreme uneasiness while driving. I was just very disappointed that Hertz had chosen this type of car as part of their rental fleet..... I simply do not know why they made this choice.... There are very many other better cars available from many manufacturers to choose to buy as part of their rental fleet which would have been much better to represent their image, and certainly given a much, much better driving experience. " Initial rental was cancelled by Auto Europe subject to presentation of supportive documents requested, but in the meantime an authorisation hold was placed on the money paid. Supportive documents were forwarded and strangely a new rental agreement was made under a new rental voucher and payment for the new rental taken. At this point, Auto Europe were holding onto payment twice leaving no access to the duplication. Strange how Auto Europe can take a payment hold, cancel the rental their end, then create a new agreement on a new booking and take a duplicate payment not rightly their's nor authorised by customer. Car was almost new, I treated it very well as if it was myu known, and gave no problems (Chevy Spark 1.0). Would recommend First Car to anyone, although I did less than 3000 kms in 51 days, I thought they were very fair. Was delivered back in ex\actly the same condition it was received because it can be very expensive if this is not done. Fortunately, I have alway sbeen lucky and not had any problems with any of the Renting Companies. And driving in CT is not for the faint hearted. "

This necessitates having the sheet updated at the time of handover - an annoying waste of time. This time it was worse than usual. The condition sheet was 'clean', but in fact the car had numerous defects, including defects relating to poor workmanship in respect of a windscreen which had obviously just been replaced. One other point worth mentioning is that the vehicle supplied on this occasion did not have remote central locking with the usual additional feature of automatic locking once one starts driving. In high-crime SA this should be standard. "

Secondly, the refund will be at a different (worse) rate leaving you further out if pocket, and lastly even if you provide receipts showing that you have refuelled the vehicle ar the airport station less than 2k away you will STILL be charged for a couple of litres as well. Completely dissatisfied with Budget and will not be using them again unless they change this. "

Last year that cost us an extra £60 and this year it is almost £40. They should return your full monetary value in your currency otherwise this could inadvertantly increase the rental amount. In addition, most financial institutions charge for foreign withdrwals resulting in a further cost to the renter. "
