    Cape Town International Airport is the main airport in the city of Cape Town, the second busiest airport in South Africa and the fourth busiest in all of Africa. It was opened in 1954 to replace the previous airport Wingfield Aerodrome. The airport runs direct flights to Europe, Africa and Asia as well as flights to other areas in South Africa such as Johannesburg and Durban. Traffic at the airport has increased at a spectacular rate with the airport now handling over 10 million passengers annually.

    The airport has two terminals which are linked by a central terminal and has 3 floors. Departures can be found on the 2nd floor, whereas arrivals are located on the 1st floor. The 3rd floor is home to the food court and shopping areas. All check-ins take place in the central terminal which has 120 check-in desks and 20 self-service desks. The two terminals are the International terminal which is located on the northern side and the Domestic terminal which is located on the southern side.

    The airport has two hotels within its precinct, the Hotel Verde which is 4 stars and named “Africa’s greenest hotel” and Road Lodge which is a budget hotel. The airport also has 9 lounges including the Bidvest Premier Lounge, the Emirates Lounge and the British Airways Galleries Lounge. You can find a wide range of restaurants including Dulce Café, Brittans, KFC and Mugg and Bean as well as shops such as Cape Farmstall and Wine Emporium, Capi Electronics, Burberry, Duty Free Mall, Sunglasses Hut and Accessorize. The airport has other services such as shoe shining, luggage storage and wrapping, pharmacy, nail and hair bar, prayer rooms and chapels, conference rooms, medical services, currency exchange, banks and ATM’s.

    How to get to and from Cape Town airport

    Getting to the airport using your car hire at Cape Town Airport is simple. It is located around 12 miles from the city centre and takes around 20 minutes to travel between the two. It can be accessed by exit 16 of the N2 freeway onto Airport Approach Road. It can also be accessed by the R300 freeway from the M2, M10 and M22. You can also travel on MyCiti bus rapid transit system which provides a shuttle service which runs every 20 minutes between the hours of 04:00 and 22:00, the shuttle runs from the airport directly to the Civic Centre bus station in the city centre which provides links to many other destinations. You must have a myconnect card to board which can be purchased at any MyCiti station kiosk as well as certain retailers. You can also choose to travel by taxi which you will find located outside the arrivals hall. Be sure to choose a licenced taxi to avoid any scams or unfair rates. There is currently no direct link to the airport via rail station however you can travel to Cape Town Railway Station by taxi.

    Parking tips

    You will find 6 car parks when you choose to rent a car at Cape Town International Airport, the Pick Up Zone (P1), Parkade (P1), Parkade (P2), Shaded Parking (P3), Shaded Parking (P4) and Long Stay Parking (P5). Pick Up Zone is free for the first 20 minutes with prices then increasing to between R22 and R53 for up to 1 hour. Shaded parking P3 and P4 have a rate of between R15 and R140 between 1 to 24 hours and are located on both sides of the car rental facilities. Parkade P1 and P2 have rates between R22 and R200 for up to 24 hours, they are generally short stay car parks and are located close to both departures and arrivals with wheelchair access and disabled spaces. Lost parking tickets hold a penalty of R150. Long stay parking P5 is designed for those who are planning to be away for 5 days or longer, with rates between R434 and R820 depending on your chosen parking interval. You can also choose to park around the city and city centre, the CBD generally offers safe parking and video surveillance as well as security. You can also park on Long Street where you will find security as well as areas such as De Waterkant, Heritage Square and Kloof Street. Areas such as Sea Point, Green Point and Waterfront also have parking with paid hourly rates.
