Ancona Airport is a modern, international airport that principally serves Ancona, an ancient city situated in the heart of Italy's beautiful Marche region. Located just a few kilometres to the west of the centre, it is sometimes referred to as Marche Airport, Ancona Falconara Airport or Raffaello Sanzio Airport after the locally-born master painter.
An important port city on the Adriatic coast, Ancona has gained popularity in recent years for its lovely squares, old churches and many historic sights, which lie in close proximity to some of Italy's best beaches. Capital of the Marches region, it was a major trade center in Roman times when Caesar established a naval base in its natural harbour.
Ancona's tourist sights are many, ranging from first-rate art museums to some of Italy's best-preserved Roman architecture. Visitors to the early 13th-century church of Santa Maria della Piazza can marvel at its wonderful interior, which includes the remains of the original 6th-century church floor.
There are plenty of possibilities for people planning to tour the area with a car hire from Ancona Airport. One of the best day trips is to the Santuario della Santa Casa in Loreto just a 30-minute drive away. Other options include the beaches of Monte Conero, most notably Portonovo Beach (one of the best in the area) and the more remote Mezzavalle Beach. Ancona is also within striking distance of Perugia inland and Pescara down the coast.
