Car hire at Billund Airport - Gateway to Western Denmark

The second-largest airport in the country after Copenhagen (the capital), Billund Airport handles around three million passenger movements annually and is the main international gateway for people visiting the western parts of Denmark. Besides its very close proximity to Legoland, one of the most famous visitor attractions in the north of Europe, it is situated only a couple of kilometres from Billund city centre and lies within striking distance of many other popular Danish towns and cities, such as Vejle (28km), Kolding (41km), Esbjerg (61km) and Aarhus (98km).

Billund Airport is connected to more than fifty-five different European airports (including Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, Helsinki, Istanbul, Brussels, Warsaw and London), which means that with a single stopover travellers can reach the city from well over 500 cities worldwide. Opened in the early 1960s, it has since become increasingly popular among visitors to the enchanting Jutland Peninsula region of Denmark and in 2002 the airport's facilities were further improved with a new terminal designed to cater for the steady growth of international traffic.

Billund's burgeoning tourism portfolio was triggered in 1968 by the opening of Legoland, the second-largest visitor attraction in Denmark after the world-famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Today, Legoland is an amazing theme park with several first-class roller coasters (such as Flying Eagle, Dragen and X-treme Racers) and many other incredible experiences for all the family. But Billund isn't only about Legoland, it also has Lalandia (a tropical water park) and the Gyttegård Plantation covering some 500 hectares of forest on the edge of town.

With a car hire from Billund Airport, the whole of western Denmark is your oyster, most notably Jutland, a large peninsula that separates the North and Baltic seas and features the lovely city of Aarhus, which was originally a bustling Viking settlement where a fascinating living museum of historic buildings can be visited. Another tourism highlight close to Billund is Thy National Park which covers about 250 square-kilometres and is the largest and oldest park of its kind in Denmark.

With over 28,000 pick-up points available at more than 190 popular destinations worldwide, Auto Europe offers outstanding car rental services in Billund and many other key towns and cities in Denmark, including Copenhagen and Aalborg. Airport Information

Billund Airport's roots go back to 1961 when the son of the Lego Group founder, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, built a private 800-metre-long runway with adjoining hangar just to the north of his manufacturing plant close to the city of Billund. After subsequent expansion development over the following sixty years, the airport today handles an average of 3,000,000-plus passengers a year and millions of kilos of cargo. Its main runway can handle airliners as large as the Boeing 747, although most passengers arrive on smaller commercial jets such as ATR-72s, Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s.
