Located approximately 10 miles north-east of Bonn and the same distance east of Cologne, Bonn Airport is one of Germany's main aviation hubs, having focused increasingly on low-cost traffic since 2002, including many medium- and long-haul destinations worldwide. With a history dating back to before the First World War, the airport handles well over 12 million passengers each year, making it the 7th busiest airport in Germany. Geographically, Bonn Airport is situated in one of the most densely-populated parts of Europe with many interesting places of tourist interest in close proximity. Bonn Airport comprises two terminal buildings situated side by side. Terminal 1, the oldest, is u-shaped with a wide range of on-site facilities, including shops, restaurants and a visitors' roof deck for viewing the planes. There are two piers with ten stands apiece and Terminal 1 passengers have the added convenience of direct access to the railway station. Opened in June 2000, Terminal 2 connects with Terminal 1 via a purpose-built walkway and more direct access is planned in the future. With a stylish glass and steel design, Terminal 2 is rectangular-shaped with eight stands and its own access to Bonn Airport railway station at basement level.
Besides an extensive duty-free area, Bonn Airports offers an exceptional passenger experience in the form of countless shops and boutiques, including Esprit, Gant and Marc O'Polo, Furthermore, there's a broad selection of food and beverage operations at the airport, most notably Starbucks, Burger King, McDonald's and curried sausage specialists Die Ess-Bahn. Other on-site conveniences for airport travellers consist of a chemist, dentist, lost and found office, post office, massage area, luggage-wrapping service and a 1,500 square-metre conference centre with 16 rooms inside Terminal 1. Serving both terminal buildings (1 and 2), Bonn Airport railway station loops off the main Cologne–Frankfurt high-speed line, thus enabling airport passengers to connect with regular long-distance trains travelling in both directions. Additionally, both the S13 S-Bahn and RE8 trains also stop here en route to Cologne and Bonn, while the RE6 regional express line connects the airport station with Düsseldorf Main Station via Cologne Main Station and Neuss Main Station on an hourly basis. Local bus services also connect the airport with the centre of Cologne (route 161) and Bonn (route SB60), plus a recently-opened coach station located at the airport now offers regular services to destinations all over Germany and beyond.
Parking at Bonn Airport is convenient and stress-free with plenty of options available both inside and outside the terminal buildings. As you arrive at the airport, the parking information system indicates which spaces are free and how to reach them, out of a total of 12,500 spaces. The best options for parking in the centre of Bonn are Münsterplatzgarage, Bonner City Parking and Friedensplatzgarage. In downtown Cologne, parking is possible next to the cathedral but expect to pay a high price. Other car parking possibilities exist in the Dom/Rhein, Heumarkt and Gürzenich districts of the city.
