Although German drivers will make you feel comfortable on the road most of the time, knowing where you are going puts you at an advantage. Familiarise yourself with the local road network, or book a car hire in Dortmund with a navigation system. On the motorways, make sure you are keeping enough distance from the car in front. The minimum distance is your speed divided by two. Pay a visit to our driving information guide for more details on traffic regulations in Germany.

You can choose to use paid on-street parking, although non-occupied parking bays may be difficult to find. Another option, also paid, are public car parks. Many shopping centres offer paid car parks as well. Park Ride facilities are available in remote areas of the city.

    Public Transportation

Local public transportation is serviced by Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) which encompasses the whole Ruhr Area. In Dortmund alone, you can choose between regional, suburban and urban trains, bus, and underground services. The Public transportation network is therefore well developed and covers a large area, allowing commuters and visitors to travel easily around the city and beyond.
