Heavily damaged during World War II, Bremen has since risen remarkably from the ashes and developed very nicely into one of Germany’s most appealing and multi-faceted city destinations. A thriving seaport in the Middle Ages, it today boasts a wealth of interesting architecture and an old historic centre blessed with a large number of interesting tourist attractions.
Don't miss the city’s centuries-old town hall which was built in the Gothic style in the early 15th century after Bremen first joined the Hanseatic League. Nor should you pass the famous Roland statue by without taking a selfie; the city’s best-loved landmark has been standing proud in the main square for over 500 years.
Bremen's key attraction is St Peter’s Cathedral (known locally as St Petri Dom), some of which dates back to the 11th century. Look out for its impressive Renaissance façade and striking Gothic interior, as well as its magnificent choir stalls which are the oldest in Germany.
Take a stroll through Bremen's charming historic centre, the city's lovingly-restored Schnoor quarter, to appreciate its old medieval atmosphere. Here you can meander through cobblestone alleyways and marvel at half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
There's much to do and see in the city's environs, thus giving you plenty of scope after picking up your car hire at Bremen Airport. Close by lies Rhododendron Park, one of the city's top tourist attractions with over 500 different species of rhododendron and various other items of tourist interest. For an exciting day-trip, why not take a leisurely drive to the wonderful city of Hamburg, home to many excellent restaurants and some of Europe's best museums.
The historic city of Bremen is also very well located for visitors looking to explore places further afield, such as Hannover and Dortmund. Other options include the German capital Berlin and a trip over the border into the north-western corner of Holland, which also lies within driving distance of Bremen.

The beginnings of the airport date back over a hundred years when a local aerospace club conducted the first experimental flights at the present site, on what was then the parade ground of the local garrison. Bremen Airport today is the main international entry and departure point of both the city and state of Bremen in northern Germany. It is located little more than 2 miles south of the city and handles around 3 million passengers a year, mainly through non-stop flights to European and North African city and seaside destinations.

Bremen Airport comprises one main passenger terminal building which has been conveniently split into three different sections named Terminal 1, 2 and 3 with five aircraft stands equipped with jet bridges and some additional stands for mid-sized aircraft on the apron. The main building contains check-in counters 5-19 and 21-38. The British low-cost carrier Ryanair uses another more basic facility to the west of the main terminal called Terminal E where the check-in counters 1E to 4E are located.
The passenger experience at Bremen Airport has been greatly improved in recent years, with the addition of several upmarket food and beverage outlets, including Asien Bankett, Punto Pasta, Istanbul Café, Cafe-Rosso, Kamps Bakery, Mayapapaya and Time Out (Terminal E). The airport's shopping and leisure area has also been extended with the inclusion of a larger Duty Free section, a spa and numerous boutiques open seven days a week. Another key facility is the viewing deck offering unimpeded views of all aircraft landing at and taking off from Bremen Airport. Passengers with extra time on their hands are encouraged to visit Bremen Hall, the airport's on-site aerospace and aviation museum featuring the impressive Junkers W33 Bremen D1167, the original aircraft that accomplished the first flight from Europe to North America in 1928.
For visitors staying locally, the airport can be reached using the A1 motorway, exiting at Arsten and taking the A281 motorway to points across the city of Bremen. Bremen Airport is well served by the city's excellent public transport system, with tram line 6 departing every 6 to 10 minutes (on Sunday evenings up to 20 minutes) to Universität Bremen via Domsheide and Hauptbahnhof. The ride takes around 10 minutes to the city centre, 16 minutes to Bremen's central station and 30 minutes to the university. If you are heading to the airport by long-distance bus, you can easily reach Bremen Airport from the ZOB Central Station by tram number 6 or bus route number 52. Taxis are plentiful and a ride to and from Bremen Airport normally costs between 10 and 15 euros depending on the city location, with journey times expected to take around 20 minutes outside the morning and evening rush-hours.
There's a total of 4,500 parking spaces available in two car parks situated directly adjacent to Bremen Airport's main terminal building. Both car parks have long-term as well as short-term parking and both Arrivals and Departures are reachable on foot in just a few minutes. Parking spaces are located approximately 30 metres from car park 1 to terminals 1-3 and approximately 100 metres to the Ryanair Terminal, while from car park 2 it is approximately 150 metres to all terminals. Drivers with reduced mobility will find dedicated parking spaces available in car park 1 on the 3rd level and in car park 2 on the ground-floor. After picking up your car hire at Bremen Airport you'll find that parking in the city centre is equally stress-free due to the many large municipal car parks that cater for locals and visitors alike, including Hochgarage am Bahnhof (Rembertiring 6), Herdentor (Rembertiring 7-9), Hillmannplatz (Hillmannstraße 2-4) and Berliner Freiheit (Berliner Freiheit 9). Bremen's popular Park & Ride system is cheap and practical with several car parks located on the inner city's perimeter in close proximity to bus and tram stops for easy travel to many of Bremen's top tourist attractions.
