    Cork airport is one of the largest and busiest airports in Ireland after Dublin and Belfast and last year handled almost 2.4 million passengers. The airport was first constructed in 1959 costing an estimated £1 million after an agreement in 1957 by the Government of Ireland. It was then opened in October 1961 and in its first year handled over 10,000 passengers. The next decade saw expansions developed on the airport and more advanced aircraft travelling to more destinations. The airport has in more recent years been named "Best Airport in Europe under 5 million passengers".

    Terminals

    Cork airport hosts one single passenger terminal which carries international flights and seasonal charter flights to and from Europe and North America. The terminal itself has 3 sections. The loop is the commercial section where you can find all the food and drink concessions as well as retail shops. The first level is the departures and check in hall and the ground floor holds the arrivals hall and the transportation areas such as bus, taxi and car hire.

    The airport has a Bank of Ireland located at the airport as well as currency exchanges and ATM’s which dispense both euros and pound sterling.     How to get to and from Cork airport

    Using a car hire at Cork airport would be the most suitable option as it gives you less time delays due to stops and waiting times that public transport would give you. It also gives you the freedom to start exploring as soon as you’ve left the airport. However if this isn’t the route you wish to take public transport options are available from the airport. There is a taxi rank located directly outside the terminal with the cost of a journey from the airport to the city centre costs around 20 euros. There are also scheduled buses which run from the airport into the city and from the city into other destinations across Ireland. The bus station is around a 20 minute journey from the airport when taking the 226 bus to or from Parnell Place Bus Station. There is also a rail station around a 10 minute walk from Parnell Place Bus Station.

    Parking tips

    When parking your rent a car at Cork airport there are short term car parks and long term car parks to choose from. The short term car park rates start from 15 minutes with the first 15 minutes being free, there after it is 2.50 for each hour up to 4 hour, then 12.50 for between 4 and 6 hours, 15.00 between 6 and 12 hours and 17.50 between 12 and 24 hours. Long term parking has 2 car parks one is Holiday Blue and one is Express Red. Holiday Blue has a daily rate of 9.50 for each 24 hour period up to 4 days of each week. The weekly rate is 44.00. On the Express Red car park has a daily rate of 10.50 as well as a weekly rate of 48.00. There are special assistance spaces available on the short term car park to allow passengers to be closer to the terminal also, but will be able to pay the long term parking rates although being on short term.
