    King Shaka International Airport replaced former Durban International Airport in 2010. The newly opened terminal can service 7.5 million passengers a year. The arrivals are located on the lower floor and departures on the upper floor of the terminal building.

    Passengers leaving from King Shaka Airport check in on the upper floor at the counters or self-service kiosks, and proceed to the respective security checkpoints, depending on their flight route. There are various shops to choose from in the departure lounges. Visitors arriving at Durban are allocated to the lower floor where they can collect their luggage. Most of the airport's shopping facilities can also be found on the arrivals floor.

    Picking up a car hire from Durban Airport is fairly easy with car rental facilities located under the elevated road outside the terminal building; use the southern exit to access the rent a car area. For drop offs, there is a separate car park marked with signs. It is worth noting that South African car fleet categories may differ from the European ones.     King Shaka International Airport provides its visitors a vast choice of facilities, from various restaurants and shops to bank services. Banks, ATMs as well as the post office can be found on the arrivals level. A large duty-free shop is located on the departure level, right after the security checkpoint. Restaurants and various shops are on both levels.

    Transportation / How to get to the airport

    There are bus, mini coach, and taxi services from the King Shaka Airport available from the public transport parking in front of international arrivals. An airport shuttle bus operates daily from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm every 45 minutes to main hotels in the city, as well as Durban bus station. Southern Shuttle requires booking in advance and runs services to further locations.

    Parking Tips

    At the airport, there are separate parking bays for short time pick ups, drop offs, as well as long stay car parks available. If you are taking your car rental to Durban, pay attention to parking meters and parking time limits in use. There is a pay and display parking system in the city centre. You may also find so called "car guards", people who will look after your parked vehicle. It is a common practice in South Africa to give tips to these men.
