Car hire at Fuerteventura Airport - Visiting the Canary Islands

Located in El Matorral, just three miles from the capital, Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura Airport has played a leading role in establishing the island as an upmarket tourist destination over the past few decades. First opened to international flights in January 1959, the airport gradually developed in the 1970s when regular flights began operating from the German city of Dusseldorf and many other key European cities. Nowadays it caters for a lot of leisure traffic arriving from top tourist-generating airports such as Manchester, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Birmingham, East Midlands, Dublin and Leeds, with Germany and the United Kingdom representing more than 50 per cent of its international traffic.

Fuerteventura has all the right attributes for a memorable visit at any time of the year. Its location just off Africa's sun-drenched north-west coast has blessed it with some of the best beaches in southern Europe, most notably Playa Esquinzo, Playa Matorral, Playa Mal Nombre, Playa Barca and Playa Risco de Paso. The climate is perfect with very little rain and plenty of sunshine, plus a lovely sea breeze often blows across the island to cool you down in high summer. And being of volcanic origin, the land and seascapes are absolutely magnificent with an exotic combination of arid desert and verdant mountains awaiting those who choose to explore this enchanting island with a car hire from Fuerteventura Airport. The island is also renowned for its exhaustive range of outdoor activities, including sailing, kiteboarding, scuba diving and golfing.

    Terminals

Due to its well-planned single-terminal layout, Fuerteventura Airport enhances the traveller's experience by making sure that they have everything they need right under a single roof. The building covers more than 93,000 square-metres of space over two floors and incorporates more than 60 check-in desks, 24 boarding gates, 34 aircraft parking spaces and 15 baggage carousels. During the peak periods of the main holiday season, the terminal building at Fuerteventura Airport can handle in excess of 3,000 passengers every hour.

    Airport Facilities

As the main air transport hub of a thriving tourist destination, it's no surprise to find that Fuerteventura Airport is equipped with a very good range of modern on-site facilities and amenities. Passengers can choose from over a dozen high-quality restaurants, with a similar number of shops available for travellers looking to buy top-end timepieces, fashionwear and those all-important gadgets and newly-launched electrical items. There's also a large Duty-free store in the heart of the airport where you can pick up locally-made products and souvenirs for friends and family back home. ATMs and bureaux de change booths are located in both the Arrivals and Departures Halls and there are work desks with plug sockets for charging iPads, smartphones, etc. You might also want to take advantage of Fuerteventura Airport's free Internet Wi-fi service offered by the airport management company Aena, which is accessible simply by connecting to the ‘Airport Free Wi-fi Aena’ network. The airport also caters for passengers with reduced mobility by offering special assistance, free of charge.

How to get to and from Fuerteventura Airport

Travelling between the airport and key destinations on the island such as the capital Puerto del Rosario and many of the most popular beach resorts is quick and easy, especially for those who choose to pick up their car rental from Fuerteventura Airport. Once you have left the airport, the FV-2 motorway will take you straight into town in a few minutes, or you can head right the way down the east coast if you are looking to avoid driving into the city. Likewise, the FV-1 motorway connects with towns and beach resorts in the northern half of the island and is picked up on the other side of Puerto del Rosario. Three efficient bus routes operate from the airport terminal to Puerto del Rosario and three of the island's main seaside resorts such as Caleta del Fuste, Las Salinas and Morro Jable, plus there are connections to other locations on the island from the main bus station in the centre of the city. Licenced taxis are readily available at the rank located right outside the Arrivals Hall. Taxis can take you directly to any part of the island in less than an hour, so transfers are short and in many cases the views are spectacular! Private and shared shuttle buses also operate to and from the airport and the main tourist resorts, but for these you'll usually need to book ahead, especially in July and August.

    Parking Tips

You'll find that parking spaces are plentiful and you'll have no problem finding a place to park your car hire at Fuerteventura Airport at any time of the year. Conveniently located a short walk from the terminal building, the main car park - P1 - can easily be reached in a couple of minutes. The airport currently has a total of 1,650 spaces, with a large number of these allocated to the main car rental companies whose reception desks are in the Arrivals Hall. Locating the car park is quite straightforward from either direction along the FV-2 motorway, alighting at the Fuerteventura Airport exit. Just follow the signs for the terminal building where you'll see sign-posts indicating the car park, with an entrance clearly marked for returning rental cars. The car park caters for drivers with reduced mobility and there are spaces also available for the charging of electric vehicles.
