    Glasgow Airport is also referred to as Glasgow International Airport. It was previously known as Abbotsinch Airport and is located in Paisley, around 8.5 miles from Glasgow city centre. The airport is the second busiest in Scotland after Edinburgh Airport handling almost 9.9 million passengers in 2017. The airport was opened in 1966 and initially only handled flights throughout the UK and Europe but later began to handle transatlantic traffic from companies which had previously flown from Glasgow Prestwich Airport.

    Where to pick up my car hire at Glasgow airport

    You will find all car hire services located around a 5 minute walk away on Nevis Way and Caledonia Way. Simply exit the airport onto Bute road and then turn left onto Caledonia way or exit from Campsie Drive and turn right onto the adjoining Nevis Way.     Terminals

    Glasgow Airport serves millions of passengers annually throughout its terminals. The airport has 2 separate terminals, the main Terminal 1 handles all arrivals and departures from airlines including British Airways and EasyJet. The new terminal, Terminal 2, only handles 3 budget airlines and include Air Transat, Jet 2 and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Check in counters for Terminal 1 are located in the centre of the concourse and has domestic arrivals on one side and international arrivals on the opposite side. Terminal 2 desks are located by a walkway which connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

    The airport has several facilities available to passengers including many services for those with disabilities or difficulties when travelling. The airport has a hidden disability scheme where you can receive a lanyard which will identify you to airport staff as needing extra assistance. You can request assistance in advance of your booking, receive mobility equipment and bring your service dog into the UK as long as it meets specific guidelines. Other services are free Wi-Fi for the first hour, mobile phone charging stations, internet, printers, photo booths luggage storage, lost property and payphones. There are also cash machines, currency exchange, meeting rooms, prayer rooms, dry cleaning, smoking areas and a free soft play area for children located on the west pier after gate 27. The airport also has many places to dine and shop. Restaurants include Frankie and Bennies, Starbucks, The Naked Deli and Krispy Kreme. Shops include Accessorize, Boots, FatFace, JD Sports, Swarvoski, WHSmith and Victoria’s Secret.

    How to get to and from Glasgow airport

    Getting around couldn’t be easier when you book a car hire at Glasgow Airport. The airport is easily accessed by junction 28 if travelling from the east or junction 29 when travelling from the west. However there are also many public transport options available. You can take the bus from almost anywhere in the country due to connections which run via Buchanan Bus Station and straight to Glasgow Airport. The Glasgow Airport Express is the fastest link between the airport to the city centre, taking around 15 minutes and around 25 minutes when travelling to Buchanan Bus Station where you will find links to other cities as well as Glasgow Central Station and Queens Street Station. Trains also run to several cities throughout Scotland and the UK including Liverpool and London. Taxis are also available at the airport, however booking in advance through the airport website will allow you a 20% discount on your booking.

    Parking tips

    There are 3 areas for parking when you choose to rent a car at Glasgow Airport. Long stay parking, short stay parking and fast track parking. Long stay parking is free for the first 30 minutes and prices increase daily thereafter. Short stay parking has 2 car parks, car park 1 and the multi story car park 2. Prices range between £3.00 and £57 up to 48 hours. Fast track parking also has fast track security so is the quickest way of getting to your gate with prices ranging between £42 up to £133 for between 1 and 4 days. There is also a pick up and drop off area which costs between £2 and £45 for up to an hour. There is up to 30 minutes of free parking for all blue badge holders with spaces on car park 1 and each floor of car park 2. You can also choose to park in areas around the city with spaces at Shields Road Subway Station, Bridge Street and Kelvinbridge all located close to the city centre. There is also free parking in Patrick, Govan and Ibrox where you can choose to use the subway Park and Ride service. You can also park in the Sauchiehall Street area, however there is a maximum stay of 2 hours and parking restrictions apply between 8am and 6pm.
