Station Information

The original train station was opened in 1853, but was subsequently rebuilt in 1927, 1954 and renovated from 2001 until 2004. With a total of 14 platforms, Innsbruck Train Station provides regional, national and international railway links to Vienna, Zurich, Bologna, Moscow and more. With just under 40,000 passengers per year, the station is located in the centre of the city and contains one main building. The main hall is set over two floors, the basement and ground floor. The entrance is at street level, with escalators, stairs and lifts to lower levels. There are two passageways running from the concourse under all the railway lines, with access to all platforms. The Lower Inn Valley Railway, Stubai Valley Railway, Brenner Railway, Mittenwalk Railway and the Arlberg Railway all run through Innsbruck central train station.

Where to pick up my car hire at Innsbruck Train Station

Due to the railway station location and popularity amongst travellers, many of the world-renowned car rental suppliers can be found locally. Rental offices are located a short walkig distance away from the train station. You would need to consult your car rental voucher for the actual address. Nevertheless, there are plenty of options should you choose to rent a car at Innsbruck Train Station. Before you arrive at your car hire supplier make sure you have your car rental voucher, identification, driving licence and credit card ready. An International Driving Permit may be required.

When you collect the vehicle, you should inspect it thoroughly, noting anything of concern on the pick-up slip and taking video and photographic evidence if possible. A deposit will be held on your credit card and only released once the car is returned in the same condition. Some suppliers will require more than one credit card. That of which should be in under the main driver’s name. Upon your return, make sure a member of staff checks the vehicle and signs off the return with no issues. Station facilities

This train station has minimal facilities in comparison to other major transport hubs. This is mostly due to its key location in the city and being close to so many bars, coffee houses and restaurants. The main hall does however have an information desk, a manned ticket office and ticket machines. Restrooms, luggage lockers, a lost and found area, a station security office and the OBB 1st-class lounge. Passengers travelling first-class can enter the lounge and make use to free Wi-Fi, amongst other perks. The station is disable friendly, with plenty of lifts and easy access onto platforms. An underground car park can also be found directly underneath Innsbruck Train Station. At the station is a fast-food outlet and a supermarket – but all downtown amenities are within easy walking distance.

How to get to and from Innsbruck Train Station

Although many decide to pick-up a car hire at Innsbruck Train Station, there are loads of other alternatives located at the station. Firstly, from the train station it is easy to walk to many of the city’s tourist attractions, monuments, hotels, hostels and guest houses. If this isn’t a viable option, then a taxi rank is located outside the main hall. Here you can catch a taxi to your destination. Official taxis are cream in colour with a taxi sign upon there roof. They are also metered but we recommend talking to the taxi driver of estimated cost beforehand. City buses and trams operate from this train station with links across the city and into its suburbs. Bus route F will connect you to Innsbruck Airport. Tickets can be bought onboard or from ticket machines located next to the bus stops.

Parking tips

There is a large underground car park directly underneath Innsbruck Train Station with passenger walkways directly to the station’s main hall. Those who decide on a car rental at Innsbruck Train Station will have their own allocated supplier bay. The station car park is relatively affordable, secure and safe, with exceptionally easy access to the train station. Eight car-sharing parking bays are provided, along with bike parking. A maximum 15-minutes passenger set-down area exists.

The historical centre of the city is a car-free zone. This means you won’t be able to drive into when you rent a car at Innsbruck Train Station. There are numerous car parks located around the city centre. Both free and pay for on-street parking is available in Innsbruck. However, care should be taken where you park. Blue lines indicate a pay for parking bay which is normally time limited. Check the road signs for details before parking. White lines are reserved for residents only parking.
