A car rental at Keflavik Airport provides direct access to one of the most enchanting parts of Iceland, an island renowned for its sheer beauty and glorious landscapes.
Located in the south-west of the country, in very close proximity to the capital Reykjavik, the airport is a modern international air transport hub designed to cope with the growing demand of 21st century tourism.
A land of lava fields, photogenic fjords and snow-covered mountains, Iceland is quickly gaining popularity on account of its unique natural attractions, including some 200 heated thermal swimming pools located all over the island.
Keflavik Airport is situated on the Reykjanes Peninsula, one of the world's most sustainable destinations and a spectacular coastal region full of places of immense tourist interest, such as the steam vents and bubbling mud pools of Gunnuhver and the 300-square-kilometre Reykjanes Nature Reserve.
Visitors who arrive at Keflavik International Airport are normally staying in the nearby town of Keflavik or the country's capital, Reykjavik, located just 30 miles north-east of the airport.
There's lots to see and do in the local area, most notably Viking World, the Duus Museum and the Blue Lagoon, a large geothermal lake surrounded by lava fields that's safe for bathing.
Blessed with some of northern Europe's top tourist attractions, including the National Museum, Wilderness Centre and the fascinating Langjökull Ice Cave, Reykjavik (the largest city in Iceland) lies a convenient 45-minute drive away from Keflavik Airport.
Beyond Keflavik and the surrounding Reykjanes Peninsula, visitors looking to make the most of their car hire at Keflavik Airport can enjoy a very pleasant drive along Iceland’s famous Route 1, otherwise known as the Ring Road. Running for almost 900 miles and virtually circumnavigating the island, this modern and very scenic road offers road-trippers some of the most spectacular vistas in the whole of Europe, passing many glaciers, snow-covered mountains and lunar-like landscapes along the way. At night, it's even possible to see the elusive Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), the greatest natural light show on earth.

The Icelandic capital Reykjavik lies in close proximity Keflavik and its modern airport. Built by the U.S. military during World War II, Keflavik Airport's single terminal building opened in the 1980s, with passenger numbers having increased significantly since then to almost 10 million in recent years. Nowadays many of the world's largest and most important airlines fly in and out of Kevlavik Airport to and from key cities all over the world, including Boston, Brussels, Chicago, Dallas, Frankfurt, Geneva, London, Los Angeles, Manchester, Moscow, New York, Orlando, Toronto and Washington.

The main terminal building at Keflavik Airport is named after Leif Erikson, one of the earliest Europeans to ever set foot on American soil. Opened in April 1987, it was later expanded with the opening of the South Building in 2001 (not a separate terminal) to comply with Schengen Agreement requirements, followed by the extension of the North Building in 2007.
One of the busiest airports in the whole of northern Europe, Keflavik Airport caters for all the thousands of worldly passengers passing through each day with an impressive range of on-site facilities. Its high-speed Wi-Fi signal (no password needed) is free of charge for all passengers whether they are arriving or departing, while Arion Bank provides a much-needed currency exchange service in both the Arrivals and Departures halls. There are 14 cash machines (ATMs) in the terminal building, eight of which are located in the Departures Hall where you can withdraw non-Icelandic currencies and six in Arrivals where you can withdraw the local Icelandic krónur. Besides an impressive and very spacious Duty Free area, several shops allow passengers with enough time on their hands to make purchases prior to catching their flight, including a large Icelandic-style food hall, gift shop and book store. The choice of catering outlets at Keflavik Airport ranges from Dunkin Donuts to Nord restaurant (try the lobster pizza), with everything in-between.
The local public transport network is relatively cheap and efficient between the airport and downtown Keflavik, while taxis (much more expensive) run round the clock and are a regular sight at the airport and in and around the town centre. Keflavik itself is small with a population of just 15,000 people, so it's easy to get around and see everything with your car hire at Keflavik Airport, although it's even more fun to explore on foot or by bicycle. It's even possible to walk to the airport directly from the centre of Keflavik for people travelling light!
Strætó, the local bus operator, runs scheduled services to and from Keflavik and the capital, Reykjavík (where most visitors stay). The journey between Reykjavik and Keflavik Airport takes about 45 minutes. Another efficient bus service operated by Flybus connects with all international flights to provide passengers with a convenient pick-up/drop-off at most of the main hotels in Reykjavik. Likewise, the dedicated Airport Express bus service operates between the airport and several key locations in downtown Reykjavik, as does the Airport Direct minibus company.
Parking is not a problem at the airport or Keflavik town centre. Perfect for picking people up or dropping them off, the airport's short-stay car park is conveniently located close to the main terminal (the first 15 minutes are free), while the long-term car park located north of the building has plenty of free space at a reasonable price (about 15 euros a day). Downtown Keflavik has a good range of parking options in both the centre and along its long seaside promenade where many of the hotels can be found. Parking is also possible at Keflavik's top tourist attractions, including Viking World and the ever-popular Blue Lagoon. Parking in the capital, Reykjavik, is usually problem-free with plenty of spaces available, both in the centre and the city's outlying areas.
