Krakow Train Station (known locally as Kraków Glówny) is Krakow's central railway hub set in a prime located in the very heart of the city. Originally built midway through th 19th century, it was completely rebuilt in 2014 with a design that integrated the new-look station with the adjacent Galeria Krakowska shopping centre. Built to the highest and most modern European standards, it also incorporates Krakow's main bus and local public transportation services, including the city's efficient tram network.
A short walk from the Old Town, the new train station operates as Poland’s first entirely subterranean railway station. Covering more than 10,000 square-metres of space, it has capacity to cater for around 5,000 passengers per hour and up to 100,000 a day, with an average of 660 trains passing through the station on its twelve tracks. The new station replaced the building of the historic Krakow Main Railway Station from 1847 with numerous cafés, restaurants, shops and facilities so that it is not only a train station but also a place where people can stock up on all the things they need whilst on their travels.
Renowned for its castles and churches, some dating back to the 10th century, Krakow is Poland’s second-largest city and very different to the country's capital, Warsaw, which was almost completely destroyed during Word War II. Krakow managed to emerge almost unscathed, largely due to its role as a supplies base for the Third Reich. Many key tourist attractions are within walking distance of the station, including Wawel Royal Castle, Rynek Glówny (the main market) and Rynek Underground, an amazing subterranean museum.
With a car hire from Krakow Train Station you can enjoy everything that this magnificent city has to offer, much of which lies in close proximity to the station entrance. For many people visiting the city, the first thing they want to do is go to the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau about an hour's drive to the west, especially those with Jewish ancestry, after which a trip to the nearby city of Katowice is highly recommended. Other popular day-trip options include the Wieliczka Salt Mine, Dunajec River Gorge and the Tatra Mountains, as well as Lodz, a fine Polish city located to the north of Krakow.
