Lille Airport was originally built in 1936 for the French Army and it subsequently enlarged in 1940 by Germany's forces during the occupation, but still operated solely as a military airfield. In 1947, the airport was opened to commercial aviation for the first time and a new passenger terminal was inaugurated in 1967. A second terminal specifically designed for freight was added in 1972, before a more modern passenger terminal was constructed in 1996. Today it is a busy international airport with year-round flights all around Europe and beyond.

Lille Airport has a compact but very modern terminal consisting of three floors, with both the Departures and Arrivals Halls located on Level 2 (the check-in desks are situated on the right). Managed and opearted by the Lille Métropole Chamber of Commerce, the airport also has a cargo terminal and a business aviation terminal.
Lille Airport offers a full range of on-site services, facilities and amenities for passengers, including several ATM machines, a post-box, work stations, plugs for electronic devices and Wi-Fi Internet access (free of charge for the first 15 minutes). There's a good selection of food and drink options in the restaurant/bar located on the mezzanine level of the main terminal, along with a popular coffee shop in the Departures Hall. There's a large Duty-free shop in the international departures area and an additional multi-purpose store selling newspapers, magazines, books, accessories, toys and gifts. Other facilities include a children's playground, photo booth, travel agency, baby-changing facilities and a business centre with meeting rooms. For passengers with reduced mobility, Lille Airport offers assistance through agents who can be alerted via one of the Call Posts dotted around the terminal, such as the drop-off area, for example. If passengers require special assistance when boarding or disembarking from their plane, they should let their airline and/or travel agent know at least 48 hours in advance of their day of departure.
It is quick and easy to get to and from the centre with a car rental at Lille Airport, which is located just 11 kilometres (6.8 miles) away. Take the A1 motorway and the journey will only take you around 20 minutes outside the rush-hour. With the Belgian border so near, the city can also be reached via the A27, also in about 20 minutes. Lille Airport has its own direct bus route which connects with Lille-Flanders Train Station. The airport bus stop is located next to the entrance door A situated very near the check-in desks and departures area. The airport does not have a direct train service to the city centre, although it's very easy to reach the main train station (Gare de Lille Europe) by shuttle bus. There are always several taxis standing outside the Departures hall and the average taxi fare to the centre of Lille is around €25-30, with the price going up if the ride is late at night.
When you rent a car at Lille Airport, generally speaking you won't encounter too many problems finding somewhere to park in and around the city centre because it is possible to find on-street parking spaces in certain areas. Parking in Lille is divided into five main zones: the Blue zone where the first 20 minutes are free, the Yellow and Orange zones (paid parking from 9am-7pm), the Green zone (paid parking between 9am and 12.30pm and 2-7pm) and the Red zone where parking is prohibited every day. Lille Airport has almost 1,600 parking bays spread over four car parks. The most economic option is the long-term park (P1). Although a bit further from the terminal, it is serviced by a free shuttle bus. Slightly closer to the terminal building is P2, and closer still is P3, which is located right next to the terminal. P4 offers sheltered parking on level 1 and has the highest rate. For dropping off or picking up passengers at the airport, we recommend the P2 parking located opposite the terminal, where the first 15 minutes are free.
