Madrid Barajas Airport is the world's largest airport with its 11 million sq ft covered by the terminal buildings. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are situated within one large complex, while Terminals 4 and 4S are in separate buildings, yet well connected by a free shuttle service. Terminal 1 operates primarily international and transcontinental flights. Once you are there, take some time to admire the wonderful murals at Terminal 1. While Terminal 2 handles mainly European flights, Terminal 3 is the smallest, and almost exclusively serves domestic flights. Two new runways were constructed along with Terminal 4 as the newest addition to the airport in 2006. This enlargement has contributed to doubling the number of passengers, so nowadays Terminal 4 sees almost a half the total annual number of passengers at Madrid Airport. It mainly serves US, Middle East and South American flights.

All terminals are divided into the lower and upper level; immigrations and arrivals areas are located on the lower level, and departure zones can be found on the upper level. Some airlines allow for online check-in if you are travelling only with carry-on luggage, however, if you prefer to get your boarding pass directly at the airport, you can find check-in desks in Terminals 1, 2 and 4 in the departure area. The terminals are also equipped with automatic check-in machines for your convenience. The airport provides special access for people with impaired mobility and each terminal offers VIP access (fast track) for first class and business passengers.

Car hire Pick up and Drop off

Car rental desks are rather easy to find as they are all positioned in Terminal 1 and 4. Their regular opening hours are mostly from 7am to midnight, yet some of the suppliers offer extended hours. Please note that car hire pick up or drop off during extended staff hours may be subject to an additional fee. When booking, make sure that the company has a desk in the desired terminal.

Transportation / How to get to the airport

Madrid Airport is well connected to the city of Madrid and other cities in the region by road and public transport. Two ring roads encompass the city itself, and there are also construction plans for new toll roads that will ease the traffic jams within the city limits. Drive along the A-2, the motorway connecting Barcelona and Madrid, to reach Madrid city centre. If you are travelling from Terminal 4, you can directly access the north-south motorway M-12. The airport and the city centre are well signposted on the most important roads in the city. Depending on the traffic, it will take you approximately 25-30 minutes to reach the city centre with your car hire from Madrid airport.

To navigate between terminals, passengers may use the free shuttle bus that stops at arrivals and departures areas at all terminals 24 hours a day. Alternatively, you can also use the metro, a fast and efficient means of transport, or taxis to get to the city centre. Please note that taxis operate on a price per kilometre basis with a supplementary charge for airport pick-ups.

    Parking Tips

Madrid Airport offers passengers a low-cost car park within easy reach via direct shuttle bus from the terminals. The car park is an open-air car park with covered spaces. In addition, drivers can use long-stay car parks, an express car park intended for fast dropping off or picking up passengers, a VIP car park, and a free parking area without surveillance for motorcycles. You can also profit from a 'park-sleep-fly' option, and thus put your mind at ease if you are worried about the heavy traffic before your early morning flight. In Madrid it is advisable to park at the city's outskirts, and then take the public transport to the centre. Parking in the centre itself is chargeable from Monday to Friday and on Saturday until 3pm. For long-term parking, be sure to use one of the many car parks in the centre. The sign 'Estacionamiento Prohibido' means that parking is either forbidden or restricted, do not park there as you will be issued a fine.
