Manchester Airport (MAN)
Official Name: Manchester Airport, although after its opening in 1938 the airport was originally known as Ringway Airport.
Address: Manchester M90 1QX, United Kingdom
Location: The airport is in Ringway, 8.6 miles south-west from central Manchester.
Airlines operating at Manchester Airport: Flybe has established a hub at Manchester Airport, while other low-cost airlines such as Monarch, Ryanair, and Easyjet also operate numerous flights to destinations across Europe. Connections to North America are offered by American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta, for example. The airport is also well connected to Asia with flights from Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Qatar Airlines. Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways operate flights to a long list of popular holiday destinations.
There are three terminals at Manchester Airport, 1, 2, and 3. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected via the skylink, a skybridge between the buildings. The walk takes about 10-15 minutes. Terminal 3 can be accessed from Terminal 1; a covered walkway connects it to Terminal 1 and the skylink. Terminal 1 is the largest of the three terminals, and acts as the base for Easyjet, Jet2, and Thomas Cook Airlines. Monarch, Thomson Airways, and Virgin Atlantic, on the other hand, are found in Terminal 2. Terminal 3 operates mostly domestic flights, but also serves as a base for Flybe and Ryanair.
In general, all three terminals have departures and arrivals areas separated so that check-in and arrivals are on the ground floor, and departures are found on the upper level. Information desks are located, in most terminals, close to both arrivals (after you have exited baggage reclaim) and departures areas. In Terminal 1, some check-in facilities, such as those for Jet2, are also located on the lower level, though the main check-in area is on the upper level.
Car rental companies at the airport are located in the so-called Car Rental Village, on Ringway Road. It can easily be reached using the Manchester Airport Buses (free of charge) provided by the airport. The buses depart outside the arrivals area of each terminal (from Bus Stop B at Terminals 1 and 2), and run about every 10 minutes.

All three terminals offer currency exchange and internet kiosks in the arrivals area, and cashpoints around both arrivals and departures. Terminal 1's facilities are mostly located airside, once you have passed the security checkpoint. Facilities include vast shopping opportunities, including high-end brands, and many dining options from cafes to fast food and fine dining. In arrivals, Terminal 1 provides some useful services such as a dry cleaners and a post office, as well as a handful of cafes and eateries.
Terminal 2 has facilities distributed similarly to Terminal 1: arrivals only offers one cafe, while airside shopping opportunities include cosmetics, sports apparel, and travel reading, to name only a few. A wide variety of cafes and restaurants also await you airside. Departures in Terminal 3 also gives you the possibility of purchasing whatever you might need on your travels, from travel gadgets to luggage and duty free goods. Bars and restaurants are also on offer. The arrivals area in Terminal 3 has a supermarket and two cafes.
As you drive your car hire from the airport towards the city proper, the road will connect to motorway M56 (at junction 5), from where the city is about a 20-minute drive away. All of Northern England opens up to you when you pick up your car hire at Manchester Airport. Liverpool, for example, is quite close: a drive via the M56 and then the M62 will take you to the city of the Beatles (which is 36 miles away) in 50 minutes. Sheffield can be reached in an hour and a half by driving along the M57 for 45 miles. More destinations, as well as other driving information, can be found here.
Public transportation is also available from Manchester Airport. The main transportation hub is called The Station, situated between Terminals 1 and 2. You can reach it via the skylink from the terminals. Buses, coaches, and trains depart from The Station. Trains, operated by TransPennine Express and Northern Rail, have services from the airport to Manchester Piccadilly Station, as well as other main destinations in Northern England. Buses have services to different parts of the Greater Manchester area. The Skyline bus service (number 43), for example, has a service running throughout the day and night to central Manchester. Coach services are offered by National Express to destinations near and far.
There are four different parking zones in Manchester. Zones 1 to 3 offer the possibility of paying for on-street parking for up to 10 hours. This must be done at pay and display bays, which operate from 8am to 8pm. When parking within Zone 4, parking can be paid for on Saturday or Sunday for the weekend. Car parks are also available in Manchester; there are, for example, a multitude of NCP car parks in the area.
