Car Hire at Munich Hauptbahnhof Train Station

Germany's third-largest city, Munich has much to offer the visitor and is well located for people planning a road-trip through the beautiful landscapes of southern Germany. The best way to explore this magnificent city is with a car hire at Munich Hauptbahnhof Train Station, a major transport hub located right in the heart of the centre. From here, you can reach all the main tourist highlights and most popular shopping districts within a short drive of the station.

Capital of Bavaria, Munich is a cosmopolitan city full of architectural beauty and blessed with some of Europe’s most treasured galleries and art collections. One of the city’s star attractions within easy reach of Hauptbahnhof station is the Residenz, Munich’s former royal palace which dates back to the 14th century. It houses a wealth of wonderful antiquities and priceless artefacts, as well as the amazing vaulted chamber known as the Antiquarium.

Other must-see tourist sights close to Munich Hauptbahnhof Station include the Deutsches Museum, the world’s largest collection of scientific and technological exhibits and Germany’s most popular attraction, plus the wonderful Rococo-style Asamkirche Church which is particularly notable for its gilt interior and richly-decorated altar.

Munich Hauptbahnhof Station is also perfectly placed for visitors looking to explore the city’s popular outdoor areas, especially the Englischer Garten, one of the loveliest parks in the whole of Germany. For al fresco dining and/or a refreshing drink, visit the city's ancient Marienplatz Square with its striking Column of the Virgin Mary.

One of the best reasons to rent a car at Munich Hauptbahnhof Train Station is to explore the enchanting regions of Bavaria and the Black Forest, both easily reachable by car from the city. Bavaria boasts many charming places, such as the lovely town of Bamberg with its picturesque architecture, not forgetting Neuschwanstein Castle, Ludwig II’s romantic retreat near the Austrian border.

From Munich Hauptbahnhof train station, you can enjoy exhilarating road trips like the German Alpine Road (Deutsche Alpenstrasse) which winds a scenic passage along the Bavarian Alps. Or take a leisurely drive west of the city to reach the evocatively-named Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse) running for over 300 miles through some of the most picturesque landscapes in central Europe. Another popular itinerary is our Beer Garden Tour offering a leisurely drive across 170 miles of lush German countryside.

Large and modern, Munich is also very well connected for travellers looking to use the country's extensive network of motorways or autobahns. Heading west, you can take the A8 and drive beyond Stuttgart to reach Karlsruhe, a fine city located 136 miles north-west of Munich and reachable in two hours and 20 minutes. Taking the A8 south-east will get you to Salzburg in Austria, a drive of about 90 miles that takes an hour and a half in good traffic. Driving along the A9 to the north of Munich will get you to Nuremberg in approximately an hour and 40 minutes, while the same motorway carries you all the way to Berlin 363 miles away, which will take you over five hours.

Southern Germany’s spectacular mountain roads can be reached by taking the A95, which leads you straight to the Bavarian Alps and the famous ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen just an hour's drive away. For more tips and traffic regulations, see our Germany driving information page.

First built in 1839 about 800 metres away from where it now stands, Munich Hauptbahnhof Station has been restored several times over the years, especially after World War II when it was extensively damaged. As Munich's largest railway station, Hauptbahnhof has been classified by the national rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) as a Category 1 station, meaning that it is not only one of the busiest railway stations in Germany but also one of the largest in Europe. Used by around half a million passengers every day, it has a total of 32 platforms supplemented by an integrated subterranean S-Bahn station (with 2 platforms) and an underground U-Bahn station (with 6 platforms).

    Station facilities

The station has many cafés, bars, restaurants and a choice of well-stocked supermarkets open 365 days a year. In the east of the main hall at ground level and on the first floor there are several food shops, newsagents, flower and gift shops. There is also an extensive shopping arcade in the basement to the north and east, as well as direct access to adjacent stores in the inner city through a shopping arcade. One of the most popular places to pick up a freshly-made snack is the French bakery Brioche Dorée which serves delicious pastries to tourists and commuters alike. Since 1995, a museum dedicated to Munich's young people has been located in the Starnberg wing of the station, while in the southern part of the building stands a modern and very conveniently-located hotel. Long-distance trains from many different countries, as well as many local trains from other Bavarian cities, terminate at Munich Hauptbahnhof Station, making it the ideal hub for the city's extensive public transport network comprising the S-Bahn (overground railway), U-Bahn (underground), trams and buses, all of which have stops either inside the station or in very close proximity. Other on-site facilities at Munich Hauptbahnhof Station include a left-luggage office, tourist information department, baby-changing area and a fast Wi-fi Internet connection.

How to get to and from Munich Hauptbahnhof station

More than 25 S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus and tram lines serve Munich Hauptbahnhof Station, thus facilitating quick and convenient onward journeys to most locations in and around Munich. The two systems (overground and underground) are tightly integrated and use a common ticketing scheme. The most obvious difference between the two is the colour of the trains: U-Bahn trains are blue and white and S-Bahn trains are red and white. Seven S-Bahn lines pass through Munich Hauptbahnhof: S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7, and S8, and the station has two U-Bahn stations serving the six U-Bahn lines of U1, U2, U4, U5, U7 and U8. There are also four tram stops in the vicinity of the station and bus routes conveniently corresponding with all the tram stops. Wherever you go in Munich, the chances are you'll be passing through Munich Hauptbahnhof Station at some point during your journey. Besides connecting with the city's other main transport hub, Ostbahnhof, there are direct services to several key tourist attractions, including Marienplatz and Karlsplatz. From Munich Airport, S-Bahn lines 1 and 8 run to Hauptbahnhof with a journey time of around 40 minutes. And by alighting at many of the stops in-between, you'll find that you're within easy walking distance of most of the top hotels in the city centre. The city also has very efficient tram and bus networks which can ferry you between Munich Hauptbahnhof Station and many outlying attractions like the Allianz Arena, BMW Museum, Olympic Park and the Oktoberfest. If you are travelling to Munich by train, you'll most likely arrive at Hauptbahnhof Station and from there you'll have a variety of possibilities for getting around in Munich. Taxis are equally plentiful and there are taxi ranks outside the station’s main, south and north exits.

    Parking tips

If you're looking for somewhere to park, you can use one of the three short-term car parks. For longer stays, it's best to use the multi-storey car park or one of the many underground car parks in close proximity to the station. If you have a BahnCard, you will only pay half the regular parking tariff. Two parking decks on the fourth and fifth floors of the station are accessible from Bayerstrasse and Arnulfstrasse. Limited on-street parking is available in the central area of the city during office hours with no restrictions in the evening. Parking for visitors is only permitted in parking spaces marked with blue lines. Parking in streets without blue lines is forbidden. Please note that a great part of the central area of Munich is a designated Low Emission Zone (Umweltzone). It's worth noting that cheap parking is available at the many Park and Ride (P+R) car parks in the outskirts of the city, with plenty of public transport provided to and from the city centre.
