Located just over 7 kilometres (4 miles) from the city centre, Perpignan Airport (known locally as Aéroport de Perpignan–Rivesaltes) is a popular gateway to the south of France. Despite its relatively small size, it is very strategically situated for travellers visiting the three very popular destinations of Montpellier, Toulouse and Barcelona in neighbouring Spain. The airport has a number of busy routes to Paris operating all year round, as well as to a variety of other destinations such as Agadir, Birmingham, Brussels, Dublin, Leeds-Bradford, Lille, London-Stansted, Marrakech and Nantes operated Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Transavia and Volotea.

Located a few kilometres inland from the coast, Perpignan exudes a warm Mediterranean atmosphere in close proximity to the Pyrenees mountain range. Its ancient tower known as Le Castillet was once the entrance to the city's walled historic centre, and today it offers the many visitors who manage to climb its 142 steps the most magnificent views across the vast Roussillon plain and beyond. Built in the Gothic style, Perpignan Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste) boasts an exquisite interior full of wonderful features, including a beautiful high altar made of white marble and a rare sculpture of Christ dating back to the early 14th century.

The fact that Perpignan is one of the sunniest places in France makes the possibility of leaving the city and exploring its glorious surroundings an even more enticing prospect. With a car hire from Perpignan Airport you can combine a busy sightseeing itinerary with a series of memorable day trips to some of the most amazing places in the south of France, most notably Carcassonne (one of the best-preserved medieval fortified towns in Europe) and Montpellier, a vibrant city with a wealth of tourist attractions. The drive into the foothills of the Pyrenees is another major highlight for visitors exploring the Perpignan region.
