Airport information

Ponta Delgada airport also referred to as João Paulo II Airport being named in honour of Pope John Paul II after his first visit in 1991. It was first developed in 1969 after planning for construction began in 1963. The airport was built to serve inter island connections using a single aircraft before the terminal was built in 1995. The airport is the fifth largest in Portugal and is the main airport serving the Azores region.

Terminals

The airport hosts one single passenger terminal which mainly carries flights between the Azores islands and mainland Portugal, as well as international flights to Europe and North America. The terminal consists of two levels. The ground level is split into two sections, arrivals and departures whereas the upper level hosts family restrooms and a restaurant.

Airport Facilities

Ponta Delgada airport hosts a range of facilities such as ATM’s and currency exchanges with opening hours of 7.00am until 9.00pm on weekdays and 7.00am until 2.00pm on weekends. There are baby care facilities as well as special facilities to help aid reduced mobility passengers, please ask for assistance with this if you should require it. There are areas for luggage storage and luggage wrapping, lost and found, airport lounges as well as free Wi-Fi around the whole airport. Tourist information desks as well as a post office and mail box are also situated in the terminal. The terminal also has food and drink concessions such as restaurants and duty free shop selling name brand products for lower prices.

How to get to and from Ponta Delgada airport

The airport is located around 1.2 miles from the centre of Ponta Delgada therefore making it easily accessible. Parking tips

There are two public parking facilities for your car hire at Ponta Delgada airport. Car park 1 is intended as a short stay car park where as car park 2 is intended as a medium and long stay car park both of which are located alongside the main terminal. Car park 2 is slightly further away but is also the cheaper of the two. P1 is free for the first 10 minutes and then 0.80 euros for each 15minute period thereafter up to 5 hours. It is 16.00 for the first 24 hours and then an extra 5.00 for each consecutive 24 hour period although it is a 47.00 euro charge for lost tickets. P2 is 0.70 for each 15 minute period up to 3.45am and 11 euros for 24 hours. It is then 2.50 for each 24 hour period following on and a 24.00 euro charge for loss of ticket.
