Car hire at Pula Airport - Gateway to the Croatian Riviera

Pula Airport is a mid-sized international entrance point to the city of Pula and its environs in north-western Croatia. Located just 6km (4 miles) from the city centre, it also serves as an alternative airport for parts of neighbouring Slovenia and several cities in eastern Italy. Catering for a large percentage of seasonal traffic, the airport currently receives just short of one million passenger movements each year, with July and August by far the busiest months as holidaymakers arrive to enjoy the region's long, sandy beaches and warm sunshine.

Pula itself is a major tourist destination with lots of cultural interest and dozens of first-rate attractions to visit. Chief among these is the massive and very well-preserved 20,000-seater Roman amphitheatre built in 1 AD which is now used as a concert venue. Another major highlight is the Roman Forum, an ancient precinct in the centre of town featuring the Temple of Augustus, one of Croatia's star sights. Pula also has several excellent museums, namely the House of Istrian Olive Oil (which tells the story of olive growing since Roman times) and MEMO (otherwise known as the Museum of Everyday Life and Good Memories).

With a car hire from Pula Airport you can explore the beautiful Istria region in the westernmost province of Croatia, an area that includes the largest portion of the Istrian peninsula and is a place of outstanding natural beauty. Istria is geographically compact and very easy to explore, especially with a car, and Pula provides the perfect base from which to get around and discover its breathtaking vistas. The Brijuni National Park is another of the region's most popular attractions for visitors, most notably the two enchanting islands of Veli Brijun and Mali Brijun, both of which are accessible to visitors.

    Airport Information

Despite being an international gateway, Pula Airport is relatively small in stature with a single runway, one terminal building and a limited number of on-site amenities and facilities. Located a short distance from the centre of Pula, the airport received its first flight back in 1911 when it was used for military purposes. However, with the advent of tourism, the land was redeveloped and its status was upgraded to a civil airport in 1967. In the 1980s, work on a new terminal building was carried out with capacity for around 1 million annual passenger movements. The subsequent Croatian War of Independence caused a sharp decline in passenger numbers but business gradually picked up again following the conflict and today Pula Airport is one of the country's busiest airports, expecially during the summer months.

Pula Airport consists of one large terminal building. The main terminal building is divided into international arrivals, international departures and domestic arrivals areas. Most of the passenger facilities and amenities are contained within this area, such as the airport shops, bars, restaurants, cafés and bureaux de change. Outside the terminal is a taxi rank and a bus-stop for regular routes into Pula city centre a few miles away.

    Airport Facilities

Despite Pula Airport being relatively small by international standards, travellers will find everything they need when passing through both the Arrivals and Departures halls. There are several ATMs and bureaux de change open throughout the year and free Wi-fi is available in and around the terminal building. A key feature is the airport's large Duty-free store offering products from some of the world's premium brands in the areas of perfume, cosmetics, alcoholic beverages, sweets and fashion accessories (jewellery, bags, watches, etc.), plus an impressive range of authentic Istrian items and souvenirs. Inside the terminal passengers will also find restaurants, cafés and snack-bars serving meals and refreshments for those with time on their hands before their flight. Additionally, there are baby-changing facilities in a special area called the Mother and Child Nursery where it's possible to nurse and change a baby's nappies unobtrusively.

How to get to and from Pula Airport

When you rent a car at Pula Airport you'll have no problem picking it up very quickly and driving into the city and dozens of popular destinations beyond. You can reach the city centre by following the D401 road down to the D66 and Sijanska Cesta. At the roundabout, keep driving straight down Koparska Street and continue onto Joakima Rakovca Street (you will reach the city centre in approximately 15 minutes if you follow this route). Likewise, a regular bus connects the airport with Pula, with departures timed to coincide with flight arrivals. Another bus takes passengers to other places close to Pula, such as Fazana and Medulin (which take about 25 and 40 minutes, respectively). More buses connect Pula Airport with coastal towns on the western side of Istria, as well as Rabac in eastern Istria. Other destinations include Rovin (40 minutes), Porec (1 hour 30 minutes), Novigrad (1 hour and 55 minutes) and Umag (2 hours and 15 minutes). For travellers planning a road-trip to other parts of the country, it's worth knowing that the airport is a short distance away from the A9 motorway which stretches all the way to the Slovenia border. If you opt for driving on a motorway instead of our suggested scenic route along the coast, please note that the Istrian Y, a motorway complex shaped like the letter "Y", will take you to Italy to the north and Rijeka and the Croatian mainland to the east. Please note that on the way to Rijeka you will need to drive through the long Ucka Tunnel for about three and a half miles (this is a toll road). You can find more about driving in Croatia in our handy driving information guide.

    Parking Tips

There are plenty of parking spaces readily available after you've collected your car rental at Pula Airport. Note that a self-service payment system is in operation at the car park, which is easily accessible and conveniently located just outside the terminal building on the left from the car rental desks. Finding a free parking space in downtown Pula isn't quite so straightforward, although on-street parking is allowed but please make sure you purchase a valid parking ticket and have it visibly displayed in the windscreen in order to avoid a hefty fine. A large car park with several hundred spaces is located at the waterfront a couple of minutes' walk from Pula world-famous amphitheatre, so we suggest you park there and enjoy visiting the city's main tourist attractions close by on foot.
