Located beside the sea in the north of the island, Rhodes Airport is one of the largest airports in Greece and the fourth-busiest in the country. Officially known as Diagoras International Airport, it is connected with numerous other cities and islands as well as dozens of major European capitals, including London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Athens.
Situated near the picturesque village of Paradisi, just to the south-west of the island's capital, Rhodes Town, Rhodes Airport is named after Diagoras, a Greek poet and sophist of the 5th century BC. Operating as a joint commercial and military air transportation facility, it caters for around 6 million passengers a year, the majority of whom are tourists during the holiday season.
With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Rhodes continues to be a popular destination for Europeans, with tourism accounting for around 75% of the island's economy. Famous for its lovely historic quarter, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and ranks amongst the best-preserved Old Towns in Europe, the island boasts many quaint fishing villages to visit and some of the most ancient sites in the whole of Greece.
With more than 220 kilometres of uninterrupted coastline to explore, Rhodes is equally popular for its long sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters offering ideal conditions for diving, windsurfing and many other kinds of water sport. With a car hire from Rhodes Airport, it's easily possible to discover Rhodes Town and its many attractions before touring the whole island and be back in time to enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets anywhere in Europe.

Rhodes Airport is a modern international airport consisting of two large terminals that are interconnected with one another in order to facilitate the fast and seamless movemnet of passengers, particularly during the busy summer months. Its new passenger terminal opened in 2005 with enough space to accommodate the growing number of low-cost flights operating to and from the islandf of Rhodes. Departures are served on both the ground- (check-in desks and baggage checks) and first-floors (passenger screening, gates, shops and restaurants), while arrivals are catered for in the southern corner of the ground-floor in the passport control, customs and baggage-reclaim sections.
The facilities and amenities offered by Rhodes Airport are among the most extensive of the Greek Islands. A major attraction is 'All Greek to me', a popular concept store selling contemporary Greek souvenirs and gifts for family and friends back home, including fancy jewellery, silk scarves, soft pashminas and many other elegant accessories. The food corner is also a great place to savour an authentic taste of Greece through a wide range of Greek delicacies, dairy products, olives, extra virgin olive oil, honey, spoon sweets, traditional products and a wide and varied selection of Greek wines and spirits. Besides Burger King, the airport's extensive food and beverage facilities include Bistro dei Cavalieri, Cup&Plate, Easy Grab n Go, French Bakery, Goody's Burger House, Grab&Fly, Pub, Refill Coffe & Bakery and Aircanteen. The airport also has a first-aid centre, several ATMs, bureaux de change, mobile-charging stations and free Wi-fi Internet coverage throughout the entire premises (just select the Fraport-Free network on your device). Rhodes Airport also operates two business lounges (Skyserv and Swissport Filoxenia) where drinks and light meals are served.
Picking up your car hire from Rhodes Airport and heading into the capital (Rhodes Island) is a breeze due to the fact that it is located only 14 kilometres from the centre of the city, which is easily accessible via the provincial Rhodes-Kamiros road. By car, it takes 25 minutes to get to the centre of Rhodes Town, while bus service is also provided between the airport and the city centre, with the bus stop located in close proximity to the Arrivals Hall (please note that buses are less frequent at the weekend). Taxis are readily available and a rank is located right outside Rhodes Airport's Arrivals hall.
Although most of the parking areas in Rhodes are generally free of charge, you'll probably need to buy a ticket to park in the island's capital, Rhodes Town. Please note that because Rhodes Town is such an ancient city, some of the roads are extremely narrow, which means that if you are planning to spend a lot of time in the island's capital, it might be best to choose a car that's a bit smaller and more manouevrable. If you rent a car at Rhodes Airport and want to leave it there a while, you'll have various parking options available, from premium to low cost, all of which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with round-the-clock security. In addition, several alternative parking options are available close to the airport.
