The third-largest city in Croatia, Rijeka combines all the excitement of a bustling metropolis with all the charm of a small seaside town. Historically an important port city contested by different European powers for its deep-water port, nowadays it's one of Croatia's most popular holiday destinations, prized by holidaymakers for its versatility and privileged geography.

Popular year-round, travellers flock to its shores every summer to enjoy the pleasures of the deep blue waters and pristine white sand that make the city's beaches some of the most sought-after in Croatia. And in winter, visitors only have to drive a few miles to the nearby Platak ski resort, where skiers of all skill levels can enjoy the abundant snow and long winter season to their heart's content.

Whatever the time of year, picking up a car rental at Rijeka Airport provides you with all the freedom and flexibility you need to tailor your holidays to your exact specifications, and to see as much of this beautiful part of Croatia as you want. Though open all year round, Rijeka Airport receives most of its traffic during the summer. Consequently, the airport itself is fairly small, with just one terminal that handles all flights. The check-in desks are located in the Main Hall, to the right of the entrance, and the car rental desks are located immediately to the left of the entrance.

All the departure gates can be found on the ground floor.

    Airport Facilities

While small, Rijeka Airport is not devoid of amenities, and travellers can enjoy some quality shopping on the Travel Value shop located on the first floor or relax while waiting for their flight with a nice cup of coffee on the International Café Bar (also on the first floor), or on the ground-floor Café Bar, closer to the departure gates.

For arriving travellers, the Tourist Office is located next to the car rental desks. There you can get all the information you need to get to Rijeka, and even ask for tips regarding exciting activities or unmissable sights.

How to Get to and from Rijeka Airport

Rijeka Airport is located near Omišalj, on the island of Krk. Little more than 16 miles separate it from Rijeka, a drive of just under half an hour, depending on traffic. From the airport, simply take the state road D103 and then turn to the main road D102, which will take you all the way to the Croatian mainland. It's important to be aware that the bridge that links Krk to the mainland is a toll road. However, tolls are only charged when people are travelling from the mainland to the island, not from the island to the mainland.

If instead of picking up your car hire at Rijeka Airport, you'd like to pick it up in the city, know that there are shuttle buses providing connections from the airport not just to Rijeka, but also to Omišalj, Crikvenica and Kraljevica. The buses depart from the stop in front of the terminal building. While most travellers landing at Rijeka Airport will doubtless be heading for Rijeka first, the airport is still well within driving distance of other main Croatian cities. The drive to Pula takes around an hour, the drive to Zagreb only an hour and a half, and two hours will see you all the way to Zadar. Parking Tips

Parking at the airport is free for the first ten minutes, but paid afterwards. Drivers get a ticket when entering the car park, which they will then use to pay for the parking and to exit the park at the end of their stay. Payment can be made either at the Tobacco shop or at the automated pay station. Both can be found inside the terminal building. If paying at the automated pay station, payment must be made in cash (Croatian kunas). If paying at the Tobacco shop, travellers can also pay using credit or debit cards. After paying, drivers have 10 minutes to leave the park.

When you rent a car at Rijeka Airport, Rijeka is probably your first port of call. In the summer months, during the high season, street parking can be challenging, but drivers can also rely on a comprehensive network of car parks and garages. Those planning to enjoy some sunbathing or a dip in the sea will be happy to know that there's free car parking close to all the city's beaches.

When it comes to parking in the city itself, be aware that the city is divided into parking zones: zone 0, zone 0.A, zone 1 and zone 2. Zone 0 is the one closest to the centre and the most expensive, whereas zone 2 is the one farthest out and, consequently, the cheapest.
