    Airport Information

Stockholm Västerås Airport was established in 1931 as a military airbase and it wasn’t until 1976 that it became a civilian airport. In 2020 the city council decided to close Stockholm Västerås Airport by December 2022 but has subsequently reconsidered this option. With one asphalt and one grass runway, the airport consists of one main terminal. This airport welcomes just under 109,000 passengers via its regular and seasonal air routes to the UK and Spain.

Where to pick up my car hire at Stockholm Västerås Airport

Although a minor international airport, it still has a few internationally renowned car rental suppliers. Europcar and Sixt are just two of the top car hire providers at location. Known for their competitive rates, outstanding customer service and customer focused approach – booking a car hire at Stockholm Västerås Airport with any of these suppliers will provide a stress-free start to the trip. Consult your voucher to remind yourself of whom you booked with and head towards their rental desk. These should be in the main airport terminal at arrivals.

Make sure you have your car rental voucher, identification, driving licence (International Driving Permit, if required) and a credit card. Depending on vehicle category, some suppliers may ask for more than one credit card. The credit card must be in the main driver’s name and contain enough funds for a deposit to be held on it. You should inspect the car fully during pick-up, noting anything of concern on the pick-up slip and taking video and photographic evidence. The car will be reinspected upon your return and if confirmed to be in the same condition as when it left – the deposit will be released back onto the same credit card.

    Terminals

This airport consists of one main terminal which is small in stature compared to other international airports. It is however, a very pleasant and stress-free airport to travel from, with all services and amenities close by. Contained within its terminal are all the standard facilities for a safe and secure journey. This includes check-in desks, security screening area, a departure lounge, baggage reclaim belts, customs and an arrivals hall. The terminal has been renovated and is clean, bright and modern inside, and visually well-maintained. The airport terminal is only opened during flights and closed at all other times.

    Airport Facilities

The airport has very little in terms of facilities and amenities. It does however have a Bistro restaurant, a bar and a shop once you go through security screening. There are no ATM cash machines at the airport, nor any currency exchange agencies. There is an information desk which can help you order a car rental, taxi or buy bus tickets. The restaurant serves both cold and hot foods, drinks and snacks. Whilst at the airport duty-free shop you can purchase anything from magazines to gifts and alcohol.

How to get to and from Stockholm Västerås Airport

There are several public transport options at this airport. Directly outside the airport you will find a taxi rank. Official taxis are metred and have a taxi sign upon their roof. We advise discussing the estimated cost to your journey before setting off. Mini buses are also available via the taxi service. There are buses and coaches from the airport to central Stockholm and local destinations. Tickets can be purchased onboard or at the airport. Bus number 3 will take you to Västerås Central Train Station.

A relatively stress-free option is to rent a car at Stockholm Västerås Airport. This is a great alternative to public transport and can sometimes be a more convenient way to travel. From the airport you can be in the heart of Stockholm by car in an hour and 15-minutes. If you haven’t driven in Sweden before, you should read our driving information guide section to learn about the local road rules and regulations.

    Parking Tips

There is both a short-term and long-term car park located directly outside the airport terminal. Both are around 5-minutes’ walk from the airport. Payment for the short-term car park is made at the ticket machine, whilst payment for the long-term car park is done upon exiting. Payment by cash and credit cards are accepted. No pre-booking is required, and various parking options exist – from day parking to yearly parking. 24-hour disabled parking is also available.

Many who decide to opt for a car rental at Stockholm Västerås Airport head towards central Stockholm to experience everything that the city has to offer. Parking in the city can be problematic, so we therefore recommend using the park-&-ride network implemented to ease congestion. This would mean parking your car outside the city in one of the many provided city car parks and catching public transport into the city centre. On-street free parking is difficult to come by, whilst on-street paid parking can be costly. Always read the parking signs paying particular attention to residential and commercial restrictions.
